SOLVED. A book about a boy who saves up to get two hunting dogs during, if I remember correctly, the Great Depression. [s]

A book set in the early 1900s (I think) about a boy who really wants a dog and ends up getting two hunting dogs, a boy and a girl, that work together when hunting. The boy works at a relative's shop to save up money. The dog's fur is some sort of red/copper, and the book is probably at a sixth or seventh grade reading level

I read the book in either 2013 or 2014 as it was required for class, if that's any help
