Famous Last Words is a mix of horror any mystery. Unlike other mystery, horror books Katie Alender spices it up by romance. But this romance isn't like you’re common summer flings, its more complex and unpredictable. Katie Alender grips you tight from the beginning and never lets you go. This book tells the story of a young girl becoming the change she needed. With revealing her true colors as the story progresses.
Katie Alender did a phenomenal job of creating realistic and relatable characters. For instance, Willa is the new girl at school and has a hard time fitting in and trusting her new friends even family. In Connecticut, where she lived prior, she felt out place and like a burden for everyone, in other words an outcast, but pulls through. Wyatt is described as a freak because of his unhealthy obsession with local, unsolved murders. In my perspective, I see it as a passion that he is being shoned upon because no one sees what’s behind the wall, meaning that there is more to it than what the majority knows. Wyatt is genuinely a kind and caring person but perceived as the complete opposite. Marnie was the first person to welcome Willa to Langhorn. Her genial and flamboyant actions lead Willa to think this was the beginning her new life.In one enormous contradiction this friendship imploded. One side was left with relief and the other left damage for eternity.
The plot is unquestionably complex. Alender continuously adds character, they insinuate they have significance but end up disappearing toward the falling action. These characters do add excitement and help drive the plot, but distract the reader from resolving the conflict. Which makes the ending a million times better and also wanting a sequel, which never comes out.
Ever since Willa’s Dad died, she has been been traumatized. She begins to think she caused her Dad’s death. Months passed by leaving Willa without closure. Everyday she has tried talking with her Dad. You’re probably thinking “ Her Father is dead, how would she talk to him”, Willa uses a old paranormal book and ring to, it works but not to the extent she expected. Jonathon, a big time movie director, a new step father and husband. He buys a house in Hollywood for his new family to live together. This house happens to have many secrets, including a famous actress died in and possible never left. After the big move nothing changes for for Willa, she goes back to her old habits. When trying to connect with her Dad she uncovers some the house’s secrets. One particular spirit has been trying to send her messages and hints, Life threatening in a way. This is where her quest begins her quest for closure and happiness.
A beautiful tragedy created by Katie Alender, Famous Last Words. Set in modern day time with Hollywood stars and producers. This exhilarating plot empowers the story line leading up to the suspense leaving the reader clueless on solving the mystery before it is revealed. Also dragging you on to a new level of thinking. Willa comes through and show that everything has happy endings, you just have to dig for them. In the past she has been lied to, betrayed, and looked down upon, yet she’s still found the light at the end of the tunnel.
I remembered reading Famous Last Words during middle school and enjoying it. I couldnt help but go back and read it again. Amazing combination of a murder mystery, paranormal horror story. Even a little bit of romance is in there. So much fun to read and I suggest it. This book deserves more appreciation.
