Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Looks like I am going to meet one challenge 3 times today! I'm rereading issues 1-3 of All-New Ghost Rider! YAY!!! =D
All-New Ghost Rider #1 by Felipe Smith All-New Ghost Rider (2014-) #2 by Felipe Smith All-New Ghost Rider (2014-) #3 by Felipe Smith

Yesterday I read:
Giant Size Spider-man (2014) (one-shot) by Joe Caramagna
And
Uncanny Avengers Annual #1- Which features Ghost Rider going totally postal on the Avengers and a Drunken Wolverine and Thor!!!! To be honest it was a pointless comic that had no impact on anything. The funny thing is the comic also said the same thing.

They're a great start to what seems to be a very enjoyable new Ghost Rider, plus this one drives a Charger!!! =D

PS, I completely sucked at doing the reading challenge last time. I am gonna try to be better about reading.

PSS I have a feeling some of these challenges had me in mind. Comics AND Darren Shan.

PSSS Expect tons of comics to be on this list. I JUST bough 20 for $25 off eBay today do to be here next week... And I just came to the realization that not only do I need more comic bags and boards I also need more room... I have one entire book shelf full of comics so I guess I gotta move some up and take some books down.

Last thing: The first book I will be reading in this challenge will be Winter Moon by Dean Koontz So Ghost Rider and Dean Koontz updates all at once.

Jenn (darkstarcassidy) | 257 comments Happy Birthday Joe Hill! I am also a Gemini lol. My first task will be Horns by Joe Hill

Rachel | 3524 comments Thanks for the updates, Josh & Jenn!

Josh-Darren Shan was definitely added with you in mind ;)

I must admit i've been thinking of trying a comic book/graphic novel- a few i've been considering are:

The Walking Dead, Book One by Robert Kirkman or Locke & Key, Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft (Locke & Key, #1) by Joe Hill or Chew, Vol. 1 Taster's Choice by John Layman

i've also noticed at least a few in this group read comics :)

I read the first issue of Walking Dead. It didn't really hook me. I think its because there is no reason why there is zombies walking on the Earth. Like no reason why they are there. Resident Evil on the other hand has Umbrella creating zombies to create the perfect race of new humans/biohazard Weapons. Though I can not recommend the Resident Evil comics either though mainly cause they are weird. Or at least the ones I looked at were.

I really want to read The Crow by James O'Barr , From Hell by Alan Moore , The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by Gerard Way Cirque Du Freak, Vol. 1 (Cirque Du Freak The Manga, #1) by Darren Shan The X-Files Season 10, Volume 1 by Joe Harris And of course tons of others. I'll of course get to them when I get to them. Ghost Rider is the comic book character I am collecting right now. I personally love comic books more than graphic novels though.

message 15: by Rachel (last edited Jun 07, 2014 09:21PM) (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments i read a very small free sample of the walking dead and thought it was ok-i normally don't read zombie books so i'll probably skip it especially if no reason is given for the sudden zombie population :O

i'm mostly leaning toward trying locke & key-heard it's really creepy.

i loved the movie the crow-had no idea there was a graphic novel-might have to check that one out-thanks for the info :)

message 16: by Josh (new)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Yeah I had the entire first graphic novel of Walking Dead at the time. I thought the same as you. I also thought the same about the show. The video game based on the comics I did enjoy however. Minus part two... cannibal stories are just not my thing. All that different media and no reason for zombies yet. Though I do hear Walking Dead comics do become valuable sometime after release.

Yeah. I read a couple pages of The Crow while sitting in traffic. My dad bought it so I read some of it. I am trying to get him to bring it up the next time I see him. The graphic novel is different and much more gruesome. Eric in the first page was cutting off fingers. Since The Crow started as a comic book series instead of a movie, there are still comics being made based on the resurrection idea. I think there are two different comic series right now about two different people.

Ohhh, I dont know if I told anyone here yet or not but I'm getting promoted into a manager position at work, a part time keyholder. I've been getting trained into for about the past 3 weeks for it. I'm excited because I'll officially be promoted here soon, my manager told me someone will be in contact with me to set up everything I need to do prior to being promoted, like a drug test.

I have read Under the Dome too. I loved it for the most part but it could have used a bit of editing. It tended to drag in the middle. I thought it was a creative premise and had several twists that I wasn't expecting. I will add that I am a huge fan of Stephen King and I tend to be biased, lol.

I love the Walking Dead series. I read them in the book form and I am on Book Nine and will read that one for the challenge. I also am a huge fan of the TV series.

My son and daughter love Saga, Volume 1 and I have read the first one of that one too. I highly recommend it too.

One thing I have noticed recently is that libraries are starting to carry graphic novels and I think it is a good way to try out different series without a huge cost investment. Graphic novels can be expensive in book form.

Thanks for the info Christine :) I keep hearing good things about Saga, Volume 1- so many books so little time lol- I think it's time to renew my library card!

message 24: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments My budget and, most importantly, the space I have for books does not allow me to have every book I want and the library is a nice solution for both constraints. I also donate lots of the books I am done with to the library. I think its important to support our libraries with patronage as well as donations. The true wealth of a society is its access to books and knowledge.

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Christine wrote: "Graphic novels can be expensive in book form."
I disagree with you on the price of graphic novels VS comics. All-New Ghost Rider Vol. 1 in graphic novel form will feature All-New Ghost Rider issues 1-5, Engines of Vengeance parts 1-5. I have bought each issue in comic form for $4 each. Once all 5 issues are finally out, I'll had paid $20 for all 5. If I would get the graphic novel that collects all 5 issues, I would normally pay $16 at a store. Amazon has the graphic novel for only $12.88. By buying the graphic novel you would be saving right over $7 if you get it from amazon.

Another way to look at it is, I want to read the first appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy issue 15, for the very first printing it is worth over $1 million in comic form, while if I get it in the graphic novel collection, Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man Volume 1 TPB, it contains the rarest issues of the series, for the low low price of $10.49 on Amazon.

While yes, graphic novels are more expensive than a single comic book. In the long run because graphic novels contains a full story arc of a comic book series, graphic novels are the cheapest source to buy comic stories in. That unfortunately also means that graphic novels typically get cheaper and cheaper as time goes by while comics go up and up in value, especially if the title or character is really popular.

message 27: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Josh, you obviously know more than I do about buying comic books. Thanks for enlightening me. It takes an avid collector to know these things.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll second that!

message 29: by Josh (new)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Thanks guys. To be honest, I am only just starting to get into collecting comics since I have a steady job. Here recently I've got a couple of crazy deals on comics too. I got a lot of 19 bronze Ghost Riders, 2 Ghost Rider 2099s, three other Bronze Age comics for price of $23.50... less than a dollar each. I got that two weeks ago. A few days ago I found Ghost Rider 1-20 plus Ghost Rider Annual #1 from the 2006 - 2009 Ghost Rider series for $25.00 Just over $1.00 per issue. They are suppost to be in Near Mint Condition aka like new condition. All the other lots that only have the first 15 in the series in the same condition usually go for $35-$50 on eBay. I found another crazy priced lot Marvel Presents issues 71-140... 70 issues for only $30... I haven't bought that one yet because I am waiting for a reply back from the seller of my questions AND I want to wait til my next pay day if its still there then.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeez, you have a wealth of comics, Josh. I'm envious. That is one outstanding collection. I remember the old Marvel comics growing up.

message 31: by Josh (new)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments I believe I have 230 comics The last I counted was when I ran out of new comic bags... which I was at 205 then. I was 5 bags short. 250 probably when the lot of Ghost Riders get here. I am a big marvel fan. So far I am sticking with Ghost Rider and Spider-Man, they are my favorites and also the easiest to collect when you have no idea whats going on with any of the other comics since there is like 5 Avengers comic series and ten X-men comics. Its really hard to know where to begin with those. I do have a bunch of old comics from the 90's which came from my dad. That's when I first got into comic books about 15 years ago. I just never had a great comic store to go to that was close which is why I never got into collecting hard core. I would sometimes go to a comic shop and get some Ghost Rider issues for my collection... Most of the comics my dad gave me were Ghost Rider so I had a pretty good start with them. But sadly I would rarely go to a comic shop. How I was back then was I would never buy anything online because my theory was it ruined the hunt. I've changed my mind with that mentality because of all the great deals that can be found online, and its a hunt in and of itself to find those deals. When I do I get super pumped for it. But yeah, I know so much to be an avid comic collector simply because I've had the desire to become one since I got my dad's old comics. I did research and a bunch of stuff. Like I said above because there are so many different titles for the same groups/characters, I just don't know where to begin collecting with most. So I guess once I am ready I'll just have to jump in somewhere but with my Ghost Rider passion right now to get all of his comics, its put a halt on me trying new comics/characters out.

Since getting my job almost two months ago is when I got back into collecting since I hard Amazing Spider-Man was coming back from the dead AND All-New Ghost Rider just begun. So I spend about $10 to $20 a week on getting comics... the only exception to the rule is if I find crazy deals like the 70 issues I found, which I am planning on getting on Friday. But yeah that is how I do it. I order old issues either from mycomicshop.com, or eBay depending on if I find a huge lot on ebay or not. My new issues I get once a month from midtowncomics.com I get Amazing Spider-Man, All-New Ghost Rider and Thunderbolts which features Ghost Rider as a team member. Once they start back up in a few months, I'll get Spider-Man 2099 and Superior Spider-Man. I am also thinking about getting the Death of Wolverine series in September.

I'm...in total awe. I've never met such an avid collector. Bravo, man!

message 33: by Josh (new)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Haha. I guess I underestimate myself. This site, http://cmro.travis-starnes.com/ , is how I find out if Ghost Rider appears in a different comic series since Marvel loves to cross characters over with each other all the time. The only sucky thing is site is only to the mid 90's so anything that came out later than that is not on the site yet. The guy that runs the site updates it every day. I am not sure how he does it though. But is a cool site to not only to find out about all those crossovers but what order the comics go in, either by the entire Marvel Universe starting with Fantastic 4 #1 Or by your favorite characters! I love the site because it does put everything in order.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Josh. I'll check out the site.

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments No problem! =D

message 36: by Josh (new)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Okay so I just bought 9 issues of The Walking Dead today off eBay, I got them for a great deal considering the first printing of issue 127 is apart of the set... its last month's issue but it has already doubled in price. Anyways I bought the lot because it had that issue in it. It sounds like a great place to pick the series up and read it if you are new to the series like I am... if you dont count the first issue I tried to read and didn't like. Pretty much I am checking out the series a second time but wanted to go a lot further in the series than I first tried. If I don't like it, I can sell it and make money off of it. Thats the plan that's in my head. I got 119-127. So yeah, those I will be reading for this comic challenge. Haha. =P
