Hi Mary. It could be argued that most any fantasy book is about an alternate universe. Are there any more guidelines?
Rachel Griffin is one of a bunch of parallel universes, although the full import of it does not come out in the first book.
The History of the Runestaff This is also available under the title Hawkmoon it contains 4 novels. I nominate it as a single read as books are longer now and this is very much a "single" read. If you prefer to get the infivifual novels they are Jewel in the Skull, The Mad God's Amulet, The Sword of the Dawn and The Runestaff. On some volumes it says the 3rd volume of the Eternal Champion but this is the series about the character Hawkmoon and does not require reading all that came before.
It is available in several forms.
So:
The History of the Runestaff
