Jennifer Burton Just out of curiosity, do you think using audio books are cheating?

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments Jennifer wrote: "Just out of curiosity, do you think using audio books are cheating?"

Absolutely not! Cheating means that you get something without putting the effort in to get it. I listen to every word of the unabridged version of the audiobooks just as I read every word of an unabridged novel (print edition).

Is it cheating to drive 50 miles in a car rather than walking it? You travel the same distance, you just use a different tool to get there. It's the same thing for listening to audiobooks. You get the experience of the entire story, you just use a different sense to enjoy it.

Jennifer Burton Thanks so much, I had a friend tell me it was and I figured I'd ask someone else. I'm listening to one right now. it helps when I am doing the dishes to forget the pain in my feet and back. Love the concept of them too!!

I'm not so sure why people get all bent out of shape about audiobooks. It's a silly thing for people to be so judgemental about. If your friend thinks it's cheating, that's her issue. Nobody is forcing her to read that way (though if she was to try it, she may like it.) For you, listening to audiobooks is distraction from pain. For many with visual impairments, it may the only way they'll enjoy a book. For the most of us, audiobooks are pure enjoyment.

message 61: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I love audiobooks. I think they count 100%. You are still hearing the same story and using your imagination to fill in blanks, visualize, interpret, etc... I always wonder, if you love to read, but your eyes get bad as you get older is it still thought of as "cheating" to listen when you can no longer see? So, why is it different if your eyes or hands are busy with something else? Same words whether using your eyes or ears. Enjoy your audio time!

message 62: by Almeta (last edited Jun 29, 2017 08:14AM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11464 comments Kristie wrote: "My plans for June were a bust. I think my plans for July will need to be light. The next few months are busy for me."

My June plans weren't very successful either. I think I need to be more realistic. I've actually removed some from the list I thought I wanted. IT WAS PAINFUL

Rehab, no, no, no!

Oh AND I try to do audio whenever the book I want is available in that format. I do receive some criticism about it not actually being "reading", but I feel the same as Janice does. I also think I get more out of the story, if someone is reading to me. I seem to focus better on their voice than the voice in my own head.

message 63: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments That reminds me, Almeta. Someone irl said the other day, "Janice reads all formats - audiobooks, ebooks, and regular books." I have my friends well trained. They don't even question when I say that I read audiobooks.

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Love your car journey analogy Janice. I listen to audiobooks when i am doing things in which i cannot typically read a book in. So washing up and other chores, riding on the bus, walking to the bus top etc. It allows me to fit in a few extra books a year. Recently I have been listening to podcasts though so I've listened to less audiobooks unfortunately.

message 65: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

I have read A Darker Shade of Magic and plan to finish the Shades of Magic series eventually.

Let's see how much i am able to achieve ... hehe!

Both Shades of magic & Twilight series - have biggies :)

message 74: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 296 comments I agree that audio, ebooks, and paper books are all valid for reading.

Even though I have boxes of unread books at home, I still check out a lot of library books, especially the newer ones. One thing that I do in order to cut down the wait time, is to go to other formats. Frequently the audio or large print books do not have as many people requesting them so I don't have to wait as long.

August 2017 books I hope to read (I have already checked them out from the library!!):

Audio:

Station Eleven
Dark Matter

Books:

Taps: A Novel
The Awakening
Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things
Salt to the Sea
The Alice Network
Bread Alone
A Monster Calls
The Things We Wish Were True
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Where the Light Falls
Little House in the Big Woods

message 76: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Burton I never know what I'm going to read month by month even though I do have plenty in my TBR pile to keep me busy. I'm currently reading the first Harry Potter book, and Paper Towns by John Green so those will be finished in August but other than that maybe a couple of Amelia Atwater Rhode's books and Glass by Ellen Hopkins I really have any books planned to read for the month.

I've had Paper Towns on my TBR since 2012. I'll be interested to know what you think of it. Maybe it is time for me to read it.

I gave Crank five stars, but I don't think I can take any more by continuing the series with Glass. I can't hold my breath for 681 pages!☻

message 78: by Margo (last edited Aug 14, 2017 11:17AM) (new)

Margo | 11662 comments Running a little behind, but this is my plan for August:

Book club:
The Buried Giant

Group reads:
The Rook total crock - abandoned at chapter 7 - would have been sooner if I wasn't driving!
The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

Library:
Salt to the Sea dnf
At the Water's Edge

Finishing off:
Doomsday Book

Annual Challenge:
Nefertiti: The Book of the Dead

I'll probably tag on a couple more ;-)

Kristie | 19217 comments I'm really not sure what my reading plans are for September. I think it's going to be mostly based on mood & time. I have a couple that I intend to get to.

The Witchfinder's Sister - NetGalley review & YLTO group read
The Mysterious Affair at Styles - YLTO monthly challenge
Bull Mountain - YLTO yearly challenge

Others on my 'maybe, if I feel like it' list:
The Forever Summer
Beartown
Emma in the Night
The Roanoke Girls
Never Let You Go
Silence Fallen
Relic
The Promise

Finished from August:
Jaws - YLTO yearly challenge
Smells Like Dog - YLTO yearly challenge

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I open only planning 1, maybe 2 books for September due to less time for reading. Not decided yet on what it will be.
