♞ Pat Gent I think, maybe, that there are a lot of us who are busy in other challenges that have some high-pressure deadlines, and are kind of sitting back until this one starts.

Maybe. ? Let's give each other the benefit of the doubt for now.

Kme_17 | 177 comments I really like the nightingale also. It got me out of a reading slump : )

message 53: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments Yes i was quite surprised by that book. I wasnt expecting to like it that much but it was so well written, you cant put it down when you start.

The book i read after that was quite a contrast though.. was frog music.. any one read that one ?

message 54: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent I started Frog Music at least twice, but either it wasn't "my thing" or it wasn't "the right time" because I just couldn't get into it. I'm thinking about trying again this year, but I also figure three times is either a charm or the maximum number of try and fails.

message 55: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent Ok. Let's go with this one.

I've never played UNO before. I've read through the rules and I think I get it, but what's the best advice you can give a newbie like me?

Pat - I'd cut your losses. It wasn't that great, IMO :/

Diane Woods | 81 comments That was uncalled for and I should not have said it. I understand people are busy, have lives and cannot be on the internet all the time. I am truly sorry for saying that and I hope you all will forgive me.

message 58: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments I think we'll all be more dedicated to chatting once the challenge starts! I know i always have problems chatting in the groups, and this is my second year being captain. I hope everyone finishes their other challenges for this month and is ready for February!

:-) Don't beat yourself up over it. I say things all the time without thinking. You're human.

message 60: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments Yes of course diane. Thank you for apologizing and we will all start again on the right foot :)

I would skip also frog music. But i was very surprised by that book. I loved the room and thought it was well written, and offered a new perspective, but i just didnt understand that one. You wouldnt know its from the same author.

For the advice on uno i am new as well so cant really help..

message 61: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments The best advice I could give is to read the books that would help the team the most. Also, to have fun and challenge youself to read more than you usually do!

message 62: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent Ok, Kirsten.

I'm not really sure how to do that. It's kind of confusing to understand what to select in order to play for a hand.

I look at the spreadsheet and I'm asking myself ... are we playing all the hand simultaneously for the month? Or are we working with the first hand, then the second, and on down the list?

In February we'll get a new round of hands?

message 63: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments We have thirteen hands for February, you're welcome to start reading books that fit other hands, but try to still in the first six hands for now. We don't get points for hand two until we finish hand one, so just keep that in mind.

message 64: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments My advice is to start with the difficult cards first then it easier to come up with the easier cards and then we can go forward : )

message 65: by ♞ Pat (last edited Jan 29, 2017 07:58PM) (new)

♞ Pat Gent But we can't count books that we start before Feb 1, correct? I'll be finishing my current book before that, so I will try to wait until then to start my next one...

message 66: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments Do you all realise we start this challenge in TWO DAYS? I'm so excited!

message 67: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments I can read Cosmic Rain for the 7 in our hand if that works for everyone. Please let me know if I am reading that correctly.

message 68: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments Hey Diane, how does that book count for seven?

message 69: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments Oh shoot, I knew I forgot something :) I wrote that post around midnight and I was very tired lol The author's name is Valerie Townsend and according to the rules, the author's name can start with a V for the 7 card. Is that correct?

message 70: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments Yep! I've already added it to the spreadsheet.

message 71: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments Woot woot!

message 72: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I'm glad it's starting soon! My current book is kind of boring me so I want to switch to something new, but I keep telling myself to hold off until Wednesday so I can count it for this.

message 73: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments Same here ! Only 2 more days though :)

message 74: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments Here's my shelf for the challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 75: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent I'm going to recycle a shelf I'm using for another challenge so that I don't have to keep track of too many shelves in too many places. Here's the one I plan to use for this one.

Pat's UNO Shelf

message 76: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent I'll be starting Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty this week. It fits the 2 in our first hand.

message 77: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments And it has officially started !
May the pages ever be in your favor !

Happy start day! I think pages have been in my favor since I was 5! LOL

Question: Would you rather us put our finished books on our shelves with the date read attached?

message 79: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent Hey Team WT! Happy challenge start and enjoy your books!

message 80: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments Diane, you definitely need to add the books you read with the start and finish date attached. But also use the format of how to post a finished book in the discussion. Thanks!

message 81: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments I hope everyone had a great first day! Did anyone finish a book?

message 82: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments I can't usually finish a book in a day. I have too many other distractions lol but I do like mine so far.

message 83: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments Just finished Silence for the Dead which is good for

card 6 -title Silence for the Dead author Simone St. James

characters : Kitty Weekes, Jack Yates

message 84: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments Not yet , i read pretty fast but i have limited time, basically just before going to sleep so it takes a while unfortunately... should be one done by the beginning of next week !

message 85: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent Today is a pretty busy day for me - between 3 doctor's appointments, work, and riding lessons this evening. I should be able to get something read by the weekend though. :-)

message 86: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments Could everyone tell me their average books per month? Thanks!

message 87: by Carol (new)

Carol CB | 97 comments 4 would be the max for me.

message 88: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent Kirsten wrote: "Could everyone tell me their average books per month? Thanks!"

Mine is widely varied, because my life is ... well, it's complicated. In a good week, I can read a book every day. In a bad one, I can't get one read in a week.

I TRY to get two a week read, which seems to be a little less than average, so I would say - 6 a month probably.

message 89: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments I read a lot and am a fast reader. also have trouble sleeping a lot so I read when I cant sleep. So about 100 a month. I know I am weird : ) Finished Strength in What Remains: A Journey of Remembrance and Forgiveness by Tracy Kidder

message 90: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments My average books per month is 2-3 but closer to 2.

message 91: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I have been sick the last few days but I'm finally (HOPEFULLY) looking to be on the mend so I should have more reading time. My books per month really depends on how into the book I am, which affects how fast I can read it. For this challenge, it'll probably be 2 or so a month. Though the idea of a "challenge" might motivate me more -- we will see!

message 92: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments finished The Alchemyst by Michael Scott characters Nicholas Flamel, Perenelle Flamel, Josh Newman, Sophie Newman, Scathach the Warrior Maid, Dr. John Dee

message 93: by Diane Woods (last edited Feb 04, 2017 08:51AM) (new)

Diane Woods | 81 comments Wait - Nicholas Flamel is a "real" person? Not just someone made up for the Harry Potter books?! lol I had no idea there was character with that name in another book.

message 94: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Just finished Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. Read Feb 3-4.

Could count for 9 because of author name Nicola Yoon (starts with N)
Or could count for 1 (character name Olly), or 8 (title starting with E)

message 95: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments Diane Woods wrote: "Wait - Nicholas Flamel is a "real" person? Not just someone made up for the Harry Potter books?! lol I had no idea there was character with that name in another book."

There is a whole series : )

Kirsten (kkhoppers) | 132 comments Hey! I just updated the sheet and could anyone start to read the books for reverse? You just need to read a book someone else read. Thanks!

Does it have to be something that someone else read during this challenge, or just that they have read at some point?

They just have to mark it as a read. It could have been from five years ago or even yesterday.
