Not a fan of fantasy?

Was it really that bad?

How about you?
Any particular books ripe enough to have tomatoes thrown at them?"

Uh, were you asking me that question or the forum in general?

message 104: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uke | 62 comments It was a tie between 'Codex Seraphinianus' and 'the botony of desire'

On one end we have a book of esoteric book I read... That's not quite the right word- I witnessed this book on a dusty shelf in the library, before I knew it, I'd spent half a day just thumbing the pages and drinking it in. It twists the mind until you're ready to feel it snapping in two.

The other is about botany. You heard me right, BOTANY, the Kristen Stewart of scientific subjects. It asked do plants, he wondered, use humans as much as we use them? It was captivating and entirely unexpected.

Well I have a list of my 'Top 5 Worst Books I Read in 2016', and my #1 was Red Queen. I've been meaning to expand on my review of it for a while now, but basically my main complaints are:

The twist was horrible. It was easy to predict, and I nearly almost threw the book when it was revealed and tried to make it a surprise. I've never been so angry at a book before.

The world was confusing and didn't mesh very well since she tried to combine a futuristic high-tech society with a feudal medieval world.

THE MAIN CHARACTER WAS TERRIBLE. I could handle the rest of the book if she was actually likeable, but this has got to be one of the worst protagnists I've read in anything ever. She's selfish and prejudiced to the point of annoyance and sheer stupidity. At one point she accidentally breaks her sister's hand, thus firing her. Her sister worked for the royal family AND WAS THE ONLY SOURCE OF HER FAMILY'S INCOME, and the main character has the gull to say: "Well at least you're not working for those snobs anymore,"

I've never wanted a main character to die more than I did her.

And worst of all, I'm the only person who hates that book!

Benjamin Uke | 62 comments True medievel high-tech is hard to do well (It works for space-opera but not much else.)

*googles book* ok, it's a bit of a contrived mind-vomit of a plot... and. oh. Ohwow this is...jeez.

"Her sister worked for the royal family AND WAS THE ONLY SOURCE OF HER FAMILY'S INCOME, and the main character has the gull to say: "Well at least you're not working for those snobs anymore," "
...
WHAT?!
Is the Author at least trying to make them look like a protagonist-villain or something? Please? How?

message 108: by Shay (new)

Shay (shayreader) | 5 comments I had a few...Strange Fate just had bad language and was childish for the age of the characters. Insight wasn't well written and it felt like it was repeating things like there was nowhere else to go with it. The White Aura wasn't memorable enough to add a review.

I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be a 'realistic' portrayal, but I don't know how many people would actually do that to their own sibling, no matter how much they hated them....

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 102 comments Haha I recently updated my review because of this group and explained my thoughts on it better.

message 112: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uke | 62 comments This may come off as hypothetical, but you ever see some of these multi-million dollar books, realize they are crap and start to wonder if you could write something good on your own?

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 102 comments I pretty much know I can do better, hence why I want to be an author.

Cool! If it's any help, there's a whole website I've been reading through devoted to that, alternatehistory.com keep in mind Sturgeon's law still applies.

message 124: by SherryRose (new)

It was a book I had to read for school and while it wasn't the worst it was my least favorite book of the bunch I'd read on 2016.

Karin Woodbury (panicpotter113) For me, it was The Boy Who Knew Everything by Victoria Forester.

josephine (anjmjen) Unfortunately, it was A Gathering of Shadows :( But there were several things the author just did not convince me of, and when a main character is so unbearable it just does not work.

message 133: by Elly (new)

Elly Harry Potter and the Cursed Child 100%

message 134: by Bie (new)

Bie | 1 comments I don't think there are worst books than the House Of Night series. I read the first book and it was horrible, I almost coudn't finish it. The main caracter was the most annoying, stupid, shallow and selfish brat! Reading that book was torture.

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Red Queen

message 136: by ~Bellegirl91~ (new)

~Bellegirl91~ (bellegirl91) Can I be brutally honest here? I'm going to say Marie Lu books. Mainly the Young Elites. I just couldn't get into them AT ALL however, Prodigy and Champion of the Legend series did pick up a bit for me but definitely lacked for me and Young Elites......I was BORED. But good thing I'm a sucker for trilogies and I still need to read the last Young Elites book. But yeah, not my favorite series.........

I have a tendency to ruin thrillers for myself, so perhaps that's more on me than the book.

message 143: by Elle (new)

Elle (ellexamines on TT & Substack) (ellexamines) Probably Fan Art by Sara Tregay, which was kind of fetishistic about gay guys and also just... badly written

message 144: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 7 comments Looking for Alaska, John Green

I just thought this book was so boring! and didn't even make sense.

message 145: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Broyles The Inn Between by Marina Cohen. It looked and sounded so good and it just wasn't :(

message 146: by Purple Country (new)

Purple Country Girl (Sandy) (purplecountrygirl) Dead Nasty Helen H. Durrant - full of telling, not showing and almost no character descriptions, and it was over the top on the gross-out factor

The Woman in Cabin 10 - Ruth Ware - that main character is a special sort of annoying!

message 147: by mace (new)

mace (maces) Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas
Uprooted by Naomi Novik (dnf)
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Uprooted en aeita were just very boring for me, not my cup of tea.
And I'm one of those people that really hates the direction that maas takes the throne of glass series in, hence why i hated empire of storms.
