2017 The "All Your Book Are Belong to Us" Challenge
Scratch that thought. I can use A Princess of Mars as Aliens instead of Pulp. That opens up a whole new area of Florida Glare as the pulp/noir pick which is actually more accurate to what I was envisioning for pulp/noir.
All this started from a search for Hiassen as a pulp writer...Florida Glare
The Internet amazes me sometimes.
Well, duh. :P
:-DI'm thinking I might re-read an old favorite for pulp - that way I can also knock out the "old favorite that hasn't been reviewed" category.
Hey, I neglected to give myself credit for: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
TBR: a book you found at a garage sale
I bought from a big huge used book kiosk. That can count as a garage sale?
Oooh! I also forgot to give myself a point for: Old Man's War
for: Character: a book in which most of the main characters are retired
Oooh! I also forgot to give myself a point for: New Topic: Character
a book with a robot as the main character - A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
I updated your list MrsJ, I didn't give you the point for garage sale one since you already had "put off" in that category and I don't think we can use a single book for 2 points in the same category, or can we?Anyway, comes out to 85 points by my reckoning.
The general rule, and its a guideline written in wax crayon on a hot sidewalk so it might not be legible anymore, if it ever was, is:"a book can count for two categories, but not in the same sub-challenge, you only get a point for completing a subchallenge item and not for doinng it again and again. The total points one can receive from completing the entire challenge is 192 plus the number of books one has read over the year."(*)
(*) quotes used for effect, not to indicate that these words have ever appeared anywhere, but here at this time, nor to indicate that they will ever appear again or be blatantly contradicted at some time in the future(**)
(**) I stand to be corrected.
I have yet to find a book for that or inland Florida yet. Would Swiss Family Robinson count for Lost?

ROFL!

^Been there. I've been trawling those lists for cities in Florida that aren't on the coast. Once I remove the romance and the series books the pickings are a little slimmer. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom was my front runner until I found the whole Florida Glare genre, but most of it is in Miami or Key West it seems and my library doesn't have it. Do Everglades count as inland?I've found one that is available from my library but it is cozy mystery territory. Can that count as guilty? :)
HomeInMyShoes wrote: "Do Everglades count as inland?"The Everglades entire territory is big and varied enough to count as inland, coastal, island, river, lake, ocean... So I say yes unless a book states it's set specifically in the Southern Glades or coastal. :)
^Sounds good. My library has few Hiaasen books available so I think I've decided to read something like Catch and Release for Pulp and Murder Packs a Suitcase for Inland Florida. Gives me options of paper or eBook from the library. It might be too much crime/mystery for me to stomach, but I'll try.
Rule 12 states "a book that takes place in in-land Florida excluding the Everglades". I was going to go for Hiaasen until I read that, as most of his books do involve the Everglades :(

Most of the Florida Glare I've found is Miami or Key West. So not inland.
DisneyWorld Visitors Guide?
I think I'm down to Murder Packs a Suitcase by Cynthia Baxter for library availability. Could be worse. Its less than 300.

Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again by Donald Trump. And my library has it and, good grief, so many copies.

I'll send you a cat-o'nine-tails so you can flagellate yourself whilst reading it as well...
I've got some other selections just in case I can't bring myself to do it, but it certainly has the trainwreck aspect for me.Other options:
Don't Hassel the Hoff: The Autobiography by David Hasselhoff in which he apparently just lies a lot, Star by Pamela Anderson, and Modelland by Tyra Banks.
And, all of these are American so it totally violates my trying to avoid the US and UK mantra so I can feel extra guilty.
I promise to read at least a couple more books from Iran and Syria to make amends.
I found something for those of you who need one for "a book about something you are not supposed to be interested in". This may be one of the funniest publicity stunts I've ever seen.Tender Wings of Desire
No one is supposed to be interested in a romance with Colonel Sanders, right? Right???
It may also end up fitting "a book you choose because of the cover" because it's amazing.
KFC is in about 120 different countries now, so this should have some international appeal...
I can't stop laughing.
Hope I helped someone with their challenge but I don't care if I didn't. I just really needed to post this. :D
Edited to add: Currently free on Amazon US.
MrsJoseph wrote: "Oh fuck"ROFL If Amazon allowed gifting free ebooks, everyone I know would be cussing me right now.

As for the book, I can't! I want to, but I can't. That cover! *shiver*
PURCHASED!I think I'm still reading Crippled America, but it's written by Colonel Sanders!?! COLONEL F...ING SANDERS!!!

LOL! And it's a short read, too!
I'm so happy that I've been able to give back to the community in such a special way.

I'm going to have to go lie down for a while. Thanks (I think) for a potential solution to that category :)

LOL!
Well I've "bought" it (also free on Amazon UK). Whether I'll actually read it is not certain, but I just might...
So... I went to have a look on amazon. Went into Kindle books and put Tender wings of desire in the search box. One book came up (the right one - if it could be called "right" in any way that is).But then also this (NSFW): (view spoiler)
I would add the image that came with it, but I'm pretty sure that's not allowed in the GR T&C...
Combined with the book... It made my day xD
Does it count as a a "haul" if I received 4 books from my holds list at the library on the same day? They total over 3,500 pages since one is a collection of books 7 through 12 of the Dresden Files.I doubt I will count it either way but it sure feels like a haul right now.
I normally try to time my library holds so that I get 1-2 a week, but this last time didn't work that way. I feel a little overwhelmed trying to get these read quickly so someone else can read them since they all have multiple other people on their waiting lists. I had been waiting at least a month and a half for each of them.
^Murphy's Law. I try to, but inevitably end up with a bunch several times a year. I try to only have one high-use item on my holds so I can at leat get a renewal on most.
Yep. I've had to limit myself to two holds at a time. I can't take the pressure of having a bunch checked out at once.
It doesn't look like many people have gone fishing yet, so I thought I would post what I plan on doing since I need to adapt the physical instructions to an e-book friendly method. I very rarely can make it to a physical library, and really dislike reading paper books anymore, so need to adapt the instructions for Overdrive. Original Instructions:(view spoiler)
I will browse my overdrive library by "subject" and choose an overall category, in my case "Fiction", to approximate the "section" from the original instructions. I will then count the subjects that have at least 20 books to choose from and choose a random number between 1 and that number then go down the list alphabetically to find my selected subject. Within the subject, I will see how many pages of books there are and use that to get another random number. I will then choose a book from that page.
Close enough? Close enough.
Edit: And yes, I know that talking about getting another library book right after I whined about having too many is weird, but with wait times being what they are I need to plan ahead. My hold list is fairly well depleted now. :)
Ok. That didn't go quite like I hoped.28 subjects in the Fiction Category with 20+ books available and skipping the "erotica" section => RANDBETWEEN(1,28) = 1.
1 = African American Fiction
My thoughts: Ok, this is not something I would normally seek out so this has possibilities.
# Pages: 12 => RANDBETWEEN(1,12) => 2
Go to page 2.
Here's my first option:
"In her sizzling bestseller Soul Mates Dissipate, and its smoking sequel, Never Again Once More, Mary B. Morrison blazed a new trail in African American erotic fiction. Now she introduces a sassy, unstoppable heroine who vows to..."
And the second option:
"Robbing men, getting money, and living lavishly is all they know. For Unique, Kiara, Kay Kay, and Zoe, tomorrow isn't promised, love doesn't exist, and men ain't worth a thing. Stealing cars is their hustle, and they are at the top of their game,..."
And the third option:
"Love appears in the most unexpected places. . . For Wynn Evans, her first marriage proposal was little more than a childhood crush. Twenty-five years later, Adam Carlyle has grown up into a gorgeou [sic] package of handsome, smart, and..."
This is not what I was expecting when the subject came up "African American Fiction".
There are only 5 options out of 24 books on this page that aren't straight up erotica or steamy romance. And 1 of them is a sequel. This could be interesting. If I wanted erotica/romance I would have gotten the Col. Sanders thing above. It's short.
