I know. AWOL. A long time. Apologies. Having a new child really did me in and then sorting out finances and paternity leave and work and stress and being a bit down sometimes. Anyway, I'm back. Maybe not as much as before but I am around. Anyway the 2017 challenge.

2017 "All Your Book Are Belong to Us" Challenge
Scoring
Just score as many points as you can. Highest scores get bragging rights and the chance to put their initials on the leaderboard. People can PM me to let me know how their scoring is doing so we can keep a list of shame going. I expect myself to be pretty far down this year with everything going on in my life.
points
1 point for every book you read this year, even if it doesn't fit a challenge
bonus points
1 point for reading a book from a sub-challenge (13 points in total if you read one from every possible challenge)
1 point for completing a sub-challenge, 2 for the next completed, 3 for the next, ... up to 13 for the last one
The categories (challenge)

Let me know if I am missing any points.
Welcome back! You were missed. :) And I think I speak for everyone when I say that we understand how life can do that sometimes, and we're just happy to know you're around and alright. Now that the mushy stuff is out of the way...
Nice challenge list! You know, if I wrote a book about my adventures in Florida, I'd have that entire one covered for you. LOL But I won't because I'm too busy with my own challenge. :D
HiMS!!!! We missed you! I'm so happy you're back and okay. Congratulations on the little one! And ditto to what Christa said! (((Hugs)))
Im up for this, I'm not sure I'll read books spesifically for this but I recon a lot of my books will cover some of these points :)
Each book under anything with "set" in the description counts as a point. If you finished the alphabet one A-Z then you'd have gotten 26 points for the books read, plus a point for completing at least one book in a given category and bonus point(s) depending on how many categories you have completed at that point. And if your math is faulty I'm not going to lay blame. The others might, but I won't. :P
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!!Welcome back!!
So glad to see you and CONGRATS on the new baby!
We all understand. Life happens.
I'm just glad that you're ok. :)
This is going to pose some a challenge in optimizing the reading. I went to the library to pick a fishing book and found: The Symmetry Teacher by Andrei Bitov. So far it could count as Crayons:Blue, Alphabet:B, Miscellaneous:Fishing; Writing:1st person; Writing:BookAboutABook;Writing:BookBasedOnAnotherAuthor.I'm thinking Fishing and BasedOnAnotherAuthor.
That is if I finish it. It is Russian.
Okay, you win. I'm going to try this and just add it as another scoring section along with my existing challenge. :D

I can't figure this out: 1 point for reading a book from a sub-challenge (13 points in total if you read one from every possible challenge)Wouldn't that be 53 points + 26 for the alphabet? The goal is to read all the books in the subchallenges to get max points?
Right, that probably wasn't clear enough. Should probably read one point for trying a category. So, if you read ten books that apply to the alphabet challenge you would get 10 points for those books and one point for having dipped into that pool.So one point for starting a category one point for every book read in that category and then bonus points for completing the category equal to the number of categories you have completed.
Is that clearer? Muddier?
The alphabet challenge would give one 26 + 1 + (category bonus) for completing. Might not be fair for really large categories, but they have lots of points available and I figured this might get people branching out into some of the smaller groups of books.
I think I'm gonna stick with just my original challenges. After adding a post with this one, on top of the others, I realized I'd spend more time updating my challenges than reading. LOLBut I'm looking forward to watching the leaderboard! :)
^If it's that hard all you have to do is tell me the book and what categories it covers. I think I could make a spreadsheet pretty quick to do the tabulations fairly easily.

I doesn't help that I had 4 hrs sleep last night, I hope my brain function will pick up once I've caught up on sleep :P
I meant for Christa. As a parent of a young one again I thrive on lack of sleep. Or I pretend to.
Thanks for all the kind wishes everyone.
I took a stab at a spreadsheet and tallied the points which you can see above. I took some guesses where people would have slotted books they have shelved as read this year.I'm way behind already, but since I just started reading yesterday that is to be expected.
Thanks for the offer, Homey. It wasn't because of that so much, but rather that my other main challenge is pretty involved. The Weird Challenge takes more effort than I've ever put in for one of these things and I worry if I over-extend myself, I'll give up on all of them.
I will have a look once the weekend arrives to see if I can sort the books I've read so far! This week has been a lot of lack of energy and not enough sleep so my brain isn't fully functioning :P

Fun challenge, I've got a few on it already. What other alphabet series are there other than Sue Grafton and Carole Nelson Douglas?
Stephanie wrote: "Fun challenge, I've got a few on it already. What other alphabet series are there other than Sue Grafton and Carole Nelson Douglas?"
They don't need to be books from the same series :)
At least I hope not... LOL
I'm up to ten now with another book read and a fresh start into the Alphabet and Characte subchallenges.
HomeInMyShoes wrote: "I'm up to ten now with another book read and a fresh start into the Alphabet and Characte subchallenges."Well done :)
I'm gonna enjoy my place in the lead as I'm pretty sure it's not gonna last long... :P
It is hard to tell since the others aren't being too forthcoming with their points yet. Probably just lulling you into a false sense of security.I'm up to 14 now, but it seems wasteful to not be achieveing five points with the first few selections.
Question one: YES.Question two: who cares. :)
It really doesn't matter. In the past I've counted books as short as 31 pages. I wouldn't count an individual short story usually but that one was a prequel standalone I needed to finish a series. I've also counted the 48-page Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot. It all balances out at some point as my average book length since 2011 is 290 pages. If you think something is too short or not applicable that's your choice not anyone else's.
The goal of the challenge is to get us talking about things we read and maybe gettinng us to try some different stuff. That's really it. The points are just silly really. Giving us a chance to play book rationalization BINGO.

Thats a major failing."
Is not adding up for me. Is this a new math kind of question?
pfffffftI don't not have books - that's 100% impossible because I'm pretty sure I'm close to SABLE.
But I don't have books to read.
