Could have been a YA book I got it from a teacher when I was in middle school/ maybe high school... that's all I remember

First book that comes to mind is Alan Marshall's I Can Jump Puddles which was first published in the mid 50s.

Doesn't seem to fit with the plot you remember though - which country was your book set in? US? UK? Other?

I think it was England. It definitely wasn't in the states. Could be Australian but I'm almost certain it was somewhere in the UK. The story follows him from teenage to young adult since I remember that he marries.
