Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments Half policy question, half a which-destination-for-merge question.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gir...

Was published in these anthologies
Edge of Infinity in 2012
The Year's Best Science Fiction: Thirtieth Annual Collection in 2013
The Mammoth Book of Best New SF 26 in 2013

I can only find one probably-illegal version online.

1. Shall I merge it into Edge of Infinity as the oldest anthology as it wasn't (legally) published separately as far as I can find.
2. How to deal awards for specific novellas when merging - is it OK to have them on the anthology, or should they be removed? I'm inclined towards OK to have but wanted opinions before I do anything with the work.

1. Yes, I usually go with the oldest publication, all else being equal. (I would select an anthology of just that author's work over a general anthology, regardless of pub dates.)

2. That should be fine.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I disagree with the award for the anthology if the anthology did not win the award. I think the better alternative is to put the award in the description or on the author page.

Elizabeth (Alaska) "The included title ___________ won the xyz award in 2015."

This is the policy practice for awards that don't meet GR standards.

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments It's a Hugo though - problem with the "Big Awards" with categories for short stories, novellettes and novellae :/

For now I've set the merge in place but will leave the award mostly alone (adding a "for" note with the title)

EDIT: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7... is also showing a fair few who may be affected by whatever we decide as I can see some who (at a glance) appear to have dummy records for anthology-only entries).

Rivka - what happens with merges and Listopia in practice? Does it remove the book from the listopia, or replace the book on Listopia with the merge-target edition?

This one. At least, that should be what happens, and I have definitely seen it work that way many times.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Emy, I find this entry:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Note the O.Henry award for one of the included stories. Since the O.Henry award is exclusively a short story award, there is probably no other way to include the award, other than mentioning in the description. This appears to be the way this award is presented on GR.

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) - good find. I think that is probably the best way to go about it. The Hugos are going to be a pain since a lot of their shorts seem to be in anthologies (might be confirmation bias there though).

Rivka, if you are happy with us dealing in this manner for Awards for "short stories only published within anthologies", may I ask for it to be added/clarified in the manual? I know I'll forget if I can't check back!

Or maybe not on the bias part. I'm pretty sure when I was doing some of the Romance Awards that when I didn't find the story directly, I just skipped it entirely. I don't expect to go back and give those another look, but I will make a more thorough attempt in the future when I see such.

Please feel free to start a new thread with the proposed language for the added/changed section to the Manual in this folder: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments This crosses over with the other thread about magazines.

A lot of the retro Hugos I added the awards entries to already had entries here that really should be combined with the original magazines they were published in. The novellas and novelettes for the Hugos tend to be from the magazines (Amazing Stories, Asimov's etc) and at least for the retro Hugos, those are in the public domain and also have entries here.

Elizabeth re #9: I think the anthologies are definitely getting more common in recent years, but most of the stuff from the three shorts categories for probably the first 40-50 years worth are overwhelmingly from these magazines. I find people are more likely to add the PD ones they can get for free from Project Gutenberg than they are current issues, but that may be a confirmation bias of my own.

At the time I was struggling enough with the awards interface to deal with also merging up the standalone entries, and I just didn't get back to them, my bad. Either way, they're pretty easy to find, since the Hugo listing on the Dragoncon web page always specifies the source of first publication (since it's relevant to if they're eligible for that year.)

On the other hand, there's no point doing that merge if the magazines are just going to be deleted too. I don't think they should be, they are perfectbound literary magazines, which according to the guidelines are legit entries for GR.
