This one is probably from the 1950s or 60s, about a guy who is switching between a world in which he's wealthy and surrounded by luxury, mane a world in which he's stuck doing hard physical labor, with the twist being that the luxury world is real and the harsh world is his escape. It's probably by someone who was big in that era: Sheckley or Knight or Brown.

Argh. I know I've read this one and I know I've seen someone ask about it before, but, of course, I can't remember the title or where it was asked about.

I saw a Daily Science Fiction short story like this but it was within the past year and written in the second person (i.e., "you" instead he or I).
Andy, did anything unusual happen to the man that caused him to experience two realities?
Is this a novel or short story (in a collection)?

Can you explain how the technology works? Just give us a clear warning before revealing any spoilers.

Unfortunately I don't remember much about how the technology worked - mostly what I remember is the spoiler reveal, which was the point of the story.

Yes, it is a short story. I do remember that much. (view spoiler)
"In the Imagicon" by George Henry Smith, a short story in NEBULA AWARD STORIES 2, edited by Aldiss and Harrison.

You're welcome, Andy.

Maybe you can get it through interlibrary loan. I might look for a copy myself - I must have read this one when I was in college in the 1980s (my university had a lot of SF anthologies - which made me happy).

What bugs me is I probably read the story in a collection from the library.
