Hello there, we all have memories of the first books we ever read; but the trouble is, since reading them at the age of 5, I've not seen or heard hide nor hair of them ever since! All I can say is, it was an illustrated book series about a train driver / guard / conductor, or maybe even a perennial traveller, and, although I can only say this now due to knowledge and insight gleaned much later, it seemed to revel and reminisce (and rue its passing perhaps?) in the final years of branch and local line railways, before getting the chop by the infamous Dr Beecham. I am sure the main chap's name was, phonetically at least, Ollie Took, but the spelling may well have been different. So, does this ring a bell with anyone? I read them in infant school in the early 60s. Cheers. John H

Doesn't ring a bell, however this person is looking for the same books so I'll link your two threads:

The Hartwarp Light Railway by John Pudney? According to "Growing Point", 1968 it's "first of a series of zany tales about Olly Took and his brother Gaffer, who live at either end of the narrow gauge line to Grunty Quarry. Charley's fun with the peculiar Took locomotive must be the envy of the countless children who follow this endlessly inventive and hilarious saga." the series link: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1972...
