I just have a series of images in my mind, but I can't remember much other than this:
-- boy is maybe an orphan, but he gets taken by some guy with weird eyes who can maybe see monsters??? he may have a weird gadget on his head. They go off questing maybe with a map? The boy needs schooling, or an education, or has something special about him
--almost steampunk like, but even older. taverns and small towns
-- Ride on horses, through eerie landscape, end up in the river somehow
-- there's an evil woman with really crackly electric magic who rides some kind of buggy and they want to get away from her
-- somehow the mentor guy gets sick and they end up in a brick building where he's in the process of healing with salves and stuff
--Think this was teen or YA fantasy/sci fi
