T. Rose (gptgrits) I just finished reading Brian Freeman's thriller The Night Bird. It was great, and I plan to continue reading the series, however, I am longing to return to a cozy mystery soon. I am addicted to cozies!

I've suggested cozy mystery to others as a way to escape the stress of these times.
I'm escaping into the world of cozies but also paranormal with humor and romantic comedy because I don't want to burn out on any one genre.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments MadameZelda wrote: "I find myself reading more cozies. I believe it's the current state of the planet -- COVID-19."

I'm still reading what I had been (cozies and contemporary romance), but I know the lure of cozies. I recommend them as something familiar in a time of unknown. Though, I like the light romances I read, too (cozy romance??)

What I like about cozies is that there's no draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaama. I mean, there's drama, but things are light and the people (characters) are nice (mostly!) and things always work out. I don't want heavy right now.

T. Rose (gptgrits) I have been reading more childrens book and I am in my 60s! I like to sprinkle a McDuff story or two to cleanse the palette between the heavier books I read. I like cozy mysteries for the same reason. Not taking the world too seriously is a survival thing when we are having to deal with self quarantine. That is why I wanted to join this group. To help me chose new cozies to read.

Books are a great escape from the stresses of the world. Hope you find many cozies you to enjoy.

L J | 714 comments Started at end of April. Took me longer to finish than usual but think that's me not the books.
First two books in the Knitting in the City series by Penny Reid
Romantic comedy with suspense elements.
The Neanderthal Box Set (Knitting in the City, #1-1.5) by Penny Reid The Neanderthal Box Set (Free on Amazon)
Neanderthal Seeks Human (Knitting in the City, #1) by Penny Reid Neanderthal Seeks Human narrated by Jennifer Grace
Neanderthal Marries Human (Knitting in the City, #1.5) by Penny Reid Neanderthal Marries Human narrated by Jennifer Grace and Sebastian York
I liked both books but disliked the overly feminine voice Jennifer Grace used for important secondary character Steven. Grace continued to have him sound more feminine than women in the knitting club in the second book. It continued to throw me out of the story because I always wondered what woman was speaking and it took a moment to figure out it was Steven not a woman.
I like the characters and stories so plan to continue the series but if I didn't already have the audios from the library I might do kindle books only without bothering with audio.

I enjoyed both books. Reid considers Marries to be a continuation of Seeks and I had the free box set kindle version but didn't switch to it often. Grace isn't a bad narrator but I found that one character voice confusing. Third book has a different narrator.

I've had these TBRed for a while, too.

Have you seen that it's a multi-author "universe" of books now? "Rani" posted a list last August -- now partial since more have been issued. They're offshoots of characters and settings from Penny Reid's series.

One of my libraries has some of them on OverDrive and both have some on hoopla but I just glanced at them a month or two ago when checking to see which of the books libraries had.

L J | 714 comments The Librarian's Vampire Assistant, Book 4 by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff The Librarian's Vampire Assistant, Book 4 by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. Appropriately narrated by Sean Posvistak as Michael the title character and first person narrator.
These books started as quirky cozy mystery series but are now romantic suspense comedy serial as the story arc has become the main plot. In Book 4, as usual, some things are resolved some answers revealed but it ends with hook for next book.

I didn't realize this series started as a cozy mystery series. I have several of the early-in-series in my romance TBR files. Will have to see what I'm missing because your note makes the series a bit more intriguing to me.

In Book One vampire Michael, who many years before had career as a detective, comes to Arizona to collect the remains of his maker and investigate what happened. He meets Miriam the Librarian and finds there's more that needs investigating. The early publicity referred to it as a cozy mystery and in a broad sense of the term it felt like it to me.

L J | 714 comments Books written and narrated by M.L. Buchman. I usually prefer to read series in the order in which they take place but this is difficult with Buchman's series so I read what I have in the order of publication. Books in series are mostly military romantic suspense.

L J | 714 comments Trying to knock out some books for library challenge. I often do audio for these because challenge asks to report time reading and audio makes that easy. I messed up and failed to post for challenge that ended in April, didn't think of it until May 2. Next challenge started May 1. I'm reading some books leftover from previous library challenge lists.
Teen/YA - not something I usually read. Dystopian - again, not something I usually read. I chose this series because it it is both and it is available from Audible Stories: Free Audiobooks for Kids.
Night Sky series, YA Dystopian, by Suzanne Brockmann and Melanie Brockmann. Narrated by Melanie Brockmann who has a youthful voice that fits the teenage girl first person narration. It's not perfect but it is listenable.
There are 3 books in the YA series which is set in the same universe as Suzanne Brockmann's Fighting Destiny books. There's world building in the Night Sky books but it is scattered through the books rather than being upfront. I'm glad I've read so many SF dystopian novels and remember a bit of Fighting Destiny which was sort of SF romance.
Dangerous Destiny (Night Sky, #0.5) by Suzanne Brockmann Dangerous Destiny prequel - Sky, new girl in school, meets Calvin become friends after helping each other survive danger.
Night Sky (Night Sky, #1) by Suzanne Brockmann Night Sky Sky and Calvin meet Dana and Milo, learn about Greater Thans join forces to find missing people
Wild Sky (Night Sky, #2) by Suzanne Brockmann Wild Sky Published in 2015 this is evidently the last book in this universe series though it seems like there could have been more in both this YA series and the adult Fighting Destiny series.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments Sorry to be posting this so late in the day, but I just read my e-mail...

Today (May 20, 2020) only free romance reads for e-readers. (Maybe check May 21, 2020, too???). The site says there are 200+ available.

There are links to the biggest e-book retailers -- for EPUB readers: Apple (iBooks); Barnes and Noble (Nook); GooglePlay; and Kobo; and MOBI readers: Amazon (Kindle).

No need to sign up for newsletters, etc.; just click the links to the retailers and peruse (and get!) the freebies. Also, the last time I remember this happening, though there were repeats at the different retailers, some retailers had offerings the others didn't.

Happy hunting for things other than cozies!
