Tarinee | 908 comments "Books are lovely ,dark and Deep
And I have promises to keep
A lot to read before I sleep
A lot to read before I sleep "

-Not Robert Frost :P
I have started my journey as a book reader from audio books .Source : my father and his ghost stories where the protagonists were always cleverly replaced by Him.That's also the time when I started believing I am meant to save the world like my father saved our village time and again from Ghosts, vampires and shape sifters :)

But for physical books ,I largely depended on the Odia book collection of my father .I read them hungrily and exhausted the collection before leaving home for higher studies .

But for English Literature all I had access to were those small abridged classics available at our local book shop or tinkle digest and Raj comics .About all other great books I had no Idea then .So my real Introduction to English literature was as late as my Engineering first year .
My 11th and 12th were the driest period as a book reader due to the highly demanding engineering entrance preparation .But this was also the period when I read and fell in love with HP series (only book series I read in those two years) :)

2016 was many firsts for me as a book reader . I have come across lots of amazing authors ,the audio books (currently in love with them ) , few amazing friends who are also excellent readers.I have read their reviews and picked my books for 2017 from them .
Athough I always maintain a jornal on my life's events and books , I am going to update my this year's read here and if you are my Friend ,you will find (most probably) books you have read Decades ago .If that's the case (which will be mostly) , I have surely picked them from your shelf and have definitely considered your rating :P

some of my probables (not in the order ) for this year are
The Hobbit ★★★★★

A Little Princess ★★★★★

Rain in the Mountains: Notes from the Himalayas ★★★★

Neela Scarf ★★★★★

The Way of Kings ★★★★

Now You See Me ★★★★★

The Room on the Roof ★★

Tarinee | 908 comments Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
-P. J. O'Rourke

So if you find me crossing road , with no care for the world ,chest pumped ,at a wrong time of traffic in Delhi ,don't be surprised .

I am reading "The Hobbit" and Rain in the Mountains: Notes from the Himalayas as my first picks of 2017.

And if I am to believe this quote, I deserve a knight /sainthood/Nobel peace prize (too much?) ,if I die in the middle of reading them

Tarinee | 908 comments Book 1 : Reread of Hobbit .
format : both Audio book and a paperback
My rating: 5 beautiful best chosen stars from the Milkway galaxy :)

Just a few thoughts about the author and his work (feeling privileged to do so on his birth day , posted also on cozy read thread )

Nothing moves a heart more than the selfless act of friendship .Aren't friends the ones we chose for ourselves ,who stood by us even though they are not of our blood .O dear Tolkien , God bless your soul for this beautiful story

And those last two chapters !!!

There are authors who can assemble magnificent words to make you awe at their literary power but only a man with a kinder heart like yours, oh dear Tolkien, can summon simple words that can pierce the heart both at pleasure and pain .My mind ,dear sir ,has gone numb long back ,for it can't comprehend the source of joy while my heart kept on begging for more .

Those last few pages of your work are even beyond the astounding work of a master story teller sire and I am ready to suffer through thousands of pages of nonsense rambling if I have a faint chance of reading even a single page of what I have read in those end chapters Of yours

I wish your blessed soul rest and peace on your very birthday sir

Tarinee | 908 comments The sea wants to kiss the golden shore
The sunlight warms your skin
All the beauty that's been lost before
Wants to find us again

I can't fight you any more
It's you I'm fighting for
The sea throws rock together
But time leaves us polished stones

We can't fall any further
If we can't feel ordinary love
And we cannot reach any higher
If we can't deal with ordinary love

-A long walk to freedom OST

Tarinee | 908 comments I am visited by another kind of student,a small girl from one of the private school. Her mother has brought her to me for my autograph.

'she studies your book in class 6' I was informed
'And what book is that ? ' I asked the little girl
'Tom Sawyer' she replied promptly .so I signed for Mark Twain

Vintage Bond

enjoying it very much . going to read couple of hours more :)

message 29: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Lovely lines that about Ordinary Love. I have Rain in the mountains paperback. Had started it last year but DNF coz I felt I had to read some more of his fiction before it.

Tarinee | 908 comments :)
I would suggest Our Trees Still Grow In Dehra to begin your Bond journey .
This is a very small book and easy read at that and also Bond got Sahitya academy award for this book
His books are generally semi autobiographical in nature where imagination and reality is blurred at some point .hope you like it :) :)

message 31: by Tarinee (new)

Tarinee | 908 comments Adding few more to the list

Yayati: A Classic Tale of Lust (have already placed my order with Amazon for a Hindi Hard cover ,most probably will pick this book next )
Though I was confused between the Hindi and English version ,I think Hindi version has a better chance of not loosing the essence of the original book ( Marathi) during translation

Neela Scarf (a contemporary Hindi short story collection)

Leave It to Psmith(supposed to be one of the better works of P G Wodehouse )

message 32: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Our trees has been in my radar. I have read Delhi is not far which was okayish Susannas seven husbands which was very impressive and The blue umbrella which was not as lovely as I expected.

Tarinee | 908 comments Book 2 : A Little Princess
Format:paperback
my rating : 5 kindest and warmest stars from the universe

"I believe ,I hold
that your smile will keep me afloat
I hold ,I hold
tighter I hold
until your next smile !"

what a delightful book !

(I will definitely read this book to my daughter ,if I have one )

I love the message this book had to offer :

"I am a princess .All girls are. even if they live in tiny old attics.
even if they dress in rags ,even if they aren't pretty or smart or young. They are still princesses, all of us are.
didn't your father ever tell you that ?
didn't he ??"

princesses is not about being dressed in Royal finery and enjoy the worldly comfort .Rather a princess can be dressed in rags and still with the grandness of their personality and kindness of their heart ,can brighten other's lives.

And the chapter ' one of the populace ' is so heart touching .It broke my heart both with happiness and sorrow .Such kindness by Sara ,a little princess !

Yes but very little nothing to be offended at. After all it is a childs perception of the place and people she was brought up with.

Tarinee | 908 comments Book 3 : Rain in the Mountains: Notes from the Himalayas
Format:paperback
my rating : 3 jhil mila ti timtima ti tare aur adha tukda chand ka :)

some lines from past :

About Rain

I love Rain
my friends think it's a girly thing
What I think ?
I think my friends are idiots and loving rain is an unisex thing :P

About the mountain :

From the top of the hill
I saw a valley so naked and beautiful
as I sat mesmerized
whole of my past was reflected before my eyes

A past with memories nostalgic
sweet funny and those tear rolled moments of silent cries
I was numb for seconds a few
but in those brief moments of silence discreet
all I could remember was you , only you

About Ruskin Bond :

I like people who read books
I like people, a little more, who love to read Ruskin Bond .
But the thing I like most is to sit near my apartment Window and read a Ruskin Bond book myself and feel nostalgic , remembering all those time I spent with my friends and remember my beautiful village near the sea
And if there is a milkshake to go by Its Christmas :D

About the book

so you can anticipate my expectation when I picked the book "Rain in the mountain" by "Ruskin Bond" . A book talking about two of my favorite elements by one of my favorite author .Add to that a signed copy and the expectation was Huge :)

How was the book .what I liked about the book ? why ?
why ?
I don't know .
I only know I liked the book :)
'Why' is a very difficult and complicated Q to analyse a bond book
For his books only your heart knows what it feels. So any bond fan go for it and any newbie , read the caution carefully :P

Caution : (Imagine that bone and skull "danger" picture )

This book ,though beautiful and very diverse (with stories ,a play ,notes from bond's journals & his poems ) is not an Ideal book to begin your journey with Bond .My suggestion would still be one from 'our tree still grows in Dehra','time stops at Shamli 'or 'room on the roof ':)
