I got to be the good one instead of the bad one, for once!

I started Vampires in the Lemon Grove - for one of the Nov group reads.
I am a-l-m-o-s-t done with I, Claudius: from the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius - for my Yearly Challenge
I am enjoying Deafening - for my Yearly Challenge

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Sounds like you're on a mission, Cherie.

message 1456: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I finished Girl in Snow and started The Dispatcher. I thought Girl in Snow was ok. I wasn't crazy about the writing style. I'm enjoying The Dispatcher though.

Best reason ever!

message 1458: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11288 comments Way to go, Cherie!

message 1459: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Painted Man for the group read. I am so close to finishing Bad Science. One more bus journey should do it. I started The Monarch of the Glen for the monthly challenge. It's an American Gods novella.

message 1460: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I guess I can only take so many short stories in a go so I paused that and started Origin

message 1461: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes i think it's best to read short stories at the same time as another book. Breaks things up a bit.

message 1462: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4544 comments As usual I have too many books going at once byt I started 2 more anyway. Portrait of a Spy and The Dry.

message 1463: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Just started Autumn for my live book club read. Very unimpressed with the first 20 mins.

message 1464: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice wrote: "Sounds like you're on a mission, Cherie."

Hopefully to finish the Yearly Challenge. :o) The Night Tourist was a waste of my two days. Hopefully, No Place Like Oz will be better. If not, I have three more books lined up, but they may have to wait. And, I added Sarah's book to my TBR list.

message 1465: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I decided to bail on Lincoln in the Bardo. It's not holding my interest. The structure is too disjointed for me.

I'll start Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances for the themed read tonight.

message 1466: by Eliestal (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments I finished My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected, Vol. 3 yesterday. With this book, I have read 26 books this year which was my goal (I'm early so that's good!)
I started The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria, Vol. 1 today and will start The Shell Collector in one week or so for the group read.

message 1467: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments Finished Dark Matter it was a slow start for me but once things got going and I was able to figure things out I didn't want to put the book down.

message 1468: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Did I say I was unimpressed with Autumn? Watch me eat my words!! 60% through it and completely entranced by the way this author play with words :-)

message 1469: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finally finished I, Claudius: from the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius. I can truthfully state that it was not my favorite read for the year.

I am definitely enjoying The Atlantis Gene. The Night Tourist was YA meh but some of the ghosts were interesting.

Oh, and I started listening to The Silent Corner. The narrator is Elizabeth Rodgers.

message 1470: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Prophet and really enjoyed it. I almost gave it 5 stars. it's definitely a 2 hanky read.

Next up is The Dispatcher for the monthly challenge.

message 1471: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I just finished The Dispatcher today, Janice. It was very short, but good.

I also finished The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman today and I started The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld.

message 1472: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Dispatcher read by Zachary Quinto who did a marvelous job even though I kept hearing Spock as the main character. I figured a Spock personality for the role of dispatcher was perfect.

Next up in another Scalzi book, Lock In. When I purchased the audiobook, I got the edition narrated by Amber Benson. Since then, I've realized that I generally prefer male narrators, and I've really enjoyed Will Wheaton's performance in a couple of recent books. It will be interesting how I react to Amber Benson.

message 1473: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I love Wil Wheaton Janice and own both versions of lock in. I actually thought Amber Benson was better

message 1474: by Esther (last edited Nov 05, 2017 07:15PM) (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5199 comments I have been stuck in Real Life for a bit. During that time I read the latest Louise Penny, Now, I like them all but this one is really good. Could not let it go,

I was at friends' last weekend, they live in the area where Three Pines would be. I always feel like going driving and getting lost when I am around there... just in case,.,..

That's encouraging! I went to my sewing group today and didn't get a chance to get started.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Travis sivarT wrote: "I love Wil Wheaton Janice and own both versions of lock in. I actually thought Amber Benson was better"

This is the version we've been looking for, as Lexx hates Wil Wheaton and loves Amber Benson as Tara in Buffy. Glad you enjoyed that version Travis, and looking forward to hear what you think Janice.

I also have discovered Amber Benson writes urban fantasy herself now. Death's Daughter. We bought number 4 in the series at our book dealers the last time we were there for the novelty value.

message 1477: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments So far, I'm enjoying Amber's narration, and Scalzi's story.

I'll check out Death's Daughter. Thanks, Rusalka.

message 1478: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad everyone who read The Dispatcher enjoyed it.

message 1479: by Sarah (last edited Nov 06, 2017 10:57AM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Monarch of the Glen for the monthly challenge. I started Vampires in the Lemon Grove for the group read but it hasn't captured me yet.

message 1480: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I'm listening to The Silkworm and I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it. I think it's going to be 5 star.

Also reading Witches of Lychford on my kindle for the monthly challenge.

I loved it, Margo.

message 1482: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished A Dangerous Fortune which I rated 3 stars. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Green Darkness because I am really in the mood for another Anya Seton book.

message 1483: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe for the survey challenge.

That's been sitting on my TBR pile for a while Peggy. I will be interested in your response to it.

message 1485: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Lock In and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward for the sequel. It's expected publication date is April 2018. Hopefully some of the unanswered questions will be addressed. I'm looking forward to the next case for Shane and Vann.

I started Mao's Last Dancer today. It will fit into the Survey Challenge.

message 1486: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I really enjoyed Lock In too. I didn't realize there is sequel coming out in 2018.

Oh...I'm curious to see what you think of Mao's Last Dancer. I listened to it last year on a road trip with my husband. Neither of us cared for it, but everyone else seems to love it.

message 1487: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I haven't listened much, only the 10 minutes to retreat and back each day. Retreat is over today and life gets back to normal tomorrow, so should be able to do more reading. So far, I like what I've heard.

message 1488: by Sarah (last edited Nov 13, 2017 04:59AM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I abandoned Vampires in the Lemon Grove. I'm just not in the right frame of mind for it. It was feeling like a chore even though I hadn't finished the first story. So I started Nemesis which I'm enjoying much better. It's for the all about me challenge. It should be my last book. So pleased to be back with Harry Hole. I always hold off picking one of these books up for some reason then when I'm reading it, I struggle to put it down. I've also been focusing on finishing up books that I've left this year. SO I finally finished The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery and I Can Make You Smarter and Bad Science. It feels good.

Would be cool if you could add the details of the book you read to the post so people only have to click through to the review if they're interested. Thanks.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Deafening. This was a beautifully written story and a debut novel. It was well researched and wonderfully presented story of the time and place, in Deseronto and Bellview, Ontario, Canada. The MC had lost her hearing when she was 5 years old and the story was about her and her family and how they coped with her hearing loss and also more than half of the book about her husband Jim, an Ambulance corpsman in France in WWI.

message 1493: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am really enjoying reading Me: Stories of My Life by Katharine Hepburn. She has always been one of my favorite people.

message 1494: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I decided to call it done with Mao's Last Dancer. It wasn't holding my interest. Maybe I'll try another time.

I've started Blood Work instead.

message 1495: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments Janice wrote: "I decided to call it done with Mao's Last Dancer. It wasn't holding my interest. Maybe I'll try another time."

Sorry it didn't work for you. I felt it was a bit challenging to get through.

message 1496: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I'm just not in the right mood for it right now. Maybe there will be another time that I'll want to read it.

message 1497: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I completely understand not being in the mod for a book. I recently barely started Silence Fallen for the yearly challenge and had to put it aside. I usually love that series. I'll be trying again in a couple of weeks.

message 1498: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I think my problem was that I "had" to read the book for the Survey Challenge, not that I wanted to read it.

message 1499: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I just finished Never Let You Go for the yearly challenge. It was really good. It was a contender for the choice awards, but didn't make it into the final round.

I just started The Forever Summer, also for the yearly challenge. So far, it's pretty good.

I'm also listening to Tiger's Curse for the yearly challenge. It feels younger than I was expecting, but I'm enjoying it well enough.

message 1500: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yesterday audible was having downloading issues. I think the server was overloaded with people trying to download new releases. Anyway. I went through my library and queued up all the free stuff or real short stories I've paid a bit of nothing for through the years. Not going to list them all because there must have been at least 10 maybe 15. Nice thing was that if a connection was made it only took a minute to download a book 45 minutes to 90 minutes long. Also let me listen to a bunch of books that have been lurking in the unread zone. I listened to maybe 5 yesterday. They were all free stories audible has given us a Christmas time and one of love poems from Valentine's day we got for free
