Sci-fi fantasy fans are the worst! There are some who live the fantasy - costumes, lauguages etc Total bananas x-0

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Lol Margo, you and I will have to disagree on Cosplayers. Hats off to them for skill, time, and dedication.

message 1003: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I've never done cosplay (although would love to). The costumes are awesome and as Rusalka said, the time, effort and skill that goes into it is immense. Dressing up like a klingon or whatever is a positive thing for the authors/writers. It probably boosts their confidence that they are writing good material. I'm sure they are honoured that someone would choose their character to dress up as. I think it would be great fun.

Sandra - I just finished an audio book that your son might like. It is called The Novice. I said in an earlier post that the narrator's voice put me to sleep, but I admit that I was tired. It did pick up, after a slightly slow start. I am waiting for the 2nd book from my library. I think there are three, so far. My 12yo grandson is listing to it. It has magic, and imps, and dwarves and elves and a school setting.

I agree. My 25 yo granddaughter, who lives with me, is a Cosplayer. She taught herself how to sew and do make-up and take photographs and is always working on a new character. She makes all of her own costumes and does commissions for accessories, props, jewlery and styling wigs. She has met and talks to people from all over the country, and in some cases all over the world (kind of like us). She becomes an expert on whatever character she is working on and is like a walking encyclopedia when it comes to Anime and Pokeymon characters. This morning, on my way to work, I took her and her friend to the light rail station to go into Portland for a photo-shoot or a meet-up with some other like-minded folks. It was the first time I saw the whole outfit, and it looked pretty amazing.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Hmm. I hate costumes and make up. I'm pretty fussy with what touches my skin. Yeah cosplay not for me

Margo | 11663 comments Rusalka wrote: "Lol Margo, you and I will have to disagree on Cosplayers. Hats off to them for skill, time, and dedication."

My comment came out wrong; the people that dress up for convensions, premiers etc know that it's a bit of fun and add to the atmophere. I was referring to the people who take a few stages further and actually lose touch with reality. That is dangerous.

Not yet Jake but Paper Towns has just gone on my wistlist - not many books where the central character is called after me ;-)

Roz | 4547 comments I read The Velvet Hours. I had read another book (The Lost Wife) a while back by the same author. I gave it 5 stars. It had everything I like---historical fiction, WWII, some true/factual information, even some characters that really lived.

Now I'm starting 2 others. The Glass Room for the Year-long challenge, and Lilac Girls because it was available.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11290 comments Thank you, Cherrie. I will take a look at The Novice.

message 1017: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60018 comments I finished The Paying Guests and will start The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - both for buddy reads.

message 1018: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I started Machine Learning: New and Collected Stories for review on netgalley. I have put The Sword of Shannara on hold for now. Starting The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet tomorrow for the buddy read and yearly challenge.

message 1019: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11290 comments I started yesterday THE KITCHEN HOUSE. I DNF my last two books, so I picked a historical fiction, that usually works as a comfort read to me.

Janice (jamasc) | 60018 comments I finished The Sword of Shannara yesterday and will start Age of Swords today. It will fit my survey challenge and is a 2017 release (released yesterday).

message 1024: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments You are quick off the mark! I'm still catching up on The Riyria Revelations and then I have the Revelations to read!

message 1025: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jul 26, 2017 09:18PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60018 comments This series - (Legends of the First Empire) are in the same world but set 3000 years in the past, and can be read independently of the Riyria Revelations and Chronicles. I don't blame you for wanting to finish the other series first. They are so good, and Tim Gerard Reynolds is such a treat.

I'm reading Age of Swords for my "2017 release" challenge. It's a personal challenge I have. I got tired of never being able to vote on the Goodreads Awards because I hadn't read any of the books. I now read a new release each month.

Margo | 11663 comments Good policy Janice. I have fallen into the bad habbit of allowing amazon to shape my reading choices via their daily deals :-/

message 1027: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60018 comments I have the same problem, Margo. Their free, or nearly free offerings are filling up my to-read shelves.

message 1028: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Add Kindle Unlimited to the amazon daily deals and you have where I usually find all of my books. Which I think may be part of why I'm in a reading slump. KU has some great books, but also a lot of meh books.

message 1029: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I haven't bought a sale book in ages. Basically unless I get an email saying a wish list book is on sale. I don't check daily deals or look through the sales. I'm trying to get through my backlog which is mostly sale books. Don't get me wrong sales have been the finder of some real gems but I'm working to get my books current so I can read what I want. If I'm caught up I'll look through sale to see if there's something that looks interesting but I'm not getting sucked in their trap again.

message 1030: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I do get daily deal emails but I only buy books that I already have on my wishlist.

message 1031: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Completely random post here. I notice Janice with your post you could have worded that differently to where you could have used any form of their depending on the structure. Which is neat and completely irrelevant to anything in this thread

message 1032: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Random yet grammatically challenging Travis lol

I also finished The Sword of Shannara which was a bit of a relief as I was trying (failing!) to juggle two audio books at the same time. Now I can give my listening attention to The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and get cracking on my book club read The Sea and the Silence on kindle. At 27% in I'm not loving it.

It's a conundrum. I don't think that happens very often. To be clear I was using the possessive "their" instead of "Audiosync's offerings". Or did I just make that worse?

How are you finding the audiobook version of Thousand Autumns, Margo? I'm reading the ebook and was thinking that it could be quite confusing on audio.

message 1035: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Janice I always find unusual names difficult on audio i.e. foreign or fantasy. Life would be simpler if all characters had one syllable names lol

The first part of the story was very fast paced and, first time ever, I had to slow audio down to 90%. The male part of reading was very good though. Jacob is a very likable character with a lovable innocence and , for me, the voice has become part of the character.

message 1036: by Peggy (last edited Jul 28, 2017 02:35AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have the same Margo, also when reading paper books. Especially with longer names and when there are many.

I started The Good Luck of Right Now for the survey challenge. I didn't know it's a book in letter format, so I have to get used to that.

message 1037: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have put Child of the Prophecy back on my TBR. I was really enjoying it, but I made the mistake of reading it alongside Royal Assassin which is totally addictive and as a result, I have somewhat neglected COTP. I will start it again some other time when I can give it my full attention.

message 1038: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Lisa, I can never manage to juggle two fantasies. I think I'm going to have a give Sevenwaters a go. I've put it into my audible wishlist. Might have to wait til next year tho - I have a lot of chunky ones I need to get through first!

Yes, it is difficult to juggle two fantasy novels at the same time. I don't think I will try and do it anymore as it is a bit of a struggle. I think you will enjoy the Sevenwaters series. It's really good. I particularly love the mix of history and folklore.

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments This evening I've started this one: Being a Beast: Adventures Across the Species Divide by Charles Foster. At this moment it's a lot of science, but very interesting.

message 1042: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm just about to start Tin Man. I wasn't a fan of the author's previous book, A Year of Marvellous Ways, but this one sounds like something I might enjoy.

message 1043: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm curious to hear what you think Lisa. I didn't enjoy the other book much either and would be reluctant to try another.

I will let you know Peggy. I was quite reluctant to try another of her books too, but this sounds quite different from AYOMW so I'm willing to give it a go. Here's hoping it's more successful!

message 1045: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I started Dodger just before the weekend. A boater friend of mine gave me a hardback copy of it because the main character is a tosher and that is the name of our boat. I think I mentioned it in the thread for the group read we ran for the book a while back. Really excited to read it. I am whizzing through it now. Not sure if I can use it for my yearly challenge yet. I am also still reading Machine Learning: New and Collected Stories which is really good. I've liked nearly every story except one which I skipped. Also still listening to The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet although I'm not making much progress yet as I haven't had much time to listen to it. I'm starting to think choosing audiobooks for buddy reads is not the best move for me. I'm loving the audio version of t but I just don't get the time to listen to it.

Margo | 11663 comments I've read 40 pages of Children of Time and I'm not loving it! This one I will have no qualms if I decide to DNF as I bought it for my hubby who loove SF.

The language seems very dense so far - what I class as heavy SF. Hubby said the ideas were good but it "went on a bit". Still it may improve :-/
