Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have decided to put The Crimson Petal and the White back on my TBR. I think it's a book I will enjoy but it's so long and wordy that I think I would prefer to read it outside of challenges, when there are no time constraints and I can take as long as I want over it.

Margo | 11663 comments I listened to Boy: Tales of Childhood. Fairly enjoyable short, childhood biography that explained where Dahl got some of his ideas.

I listened to the first few chapters of The Blind Assassin then decided that life's too short to be this depressing. I was disappointed as I would have listed Margaret Atwood among my favorites but I found it hard to believe that this the author of Cat's Eye, The Penelopiad, the MaddAdam Trilogy could have written such dreary drivel.

message 653: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I finished The Best of Adam Sharp which I didn't enjoy so much and gave only 2 stars. Next is Dead Until Dark for the monthly challenge.

So, I just read this and at first glance I swore it said "oral porn"! I guess my mind is in the gutter! LOL

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Catching up on the over 100 unread posts on this thread, I only added 5 books to my TBR. Not too bad for once!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments Well, you know, I'm sure there is a niche somewhere in that genre for Homer.

message 657: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well I had a friend tell me that porn audio is better than. Porn videos. Although I'm sure it had nothing g to do with homer. He just says that strictly audio porn is better because you use all your imagination.

message 658: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I started Just One Damned Thing After Another last night. I only read the first chapter but if it's a sign of things to come, it looks like this will be a quirky, entertaining read.

Well there is a fair bit of sex in the The Odyssey but it is implyed not described. Can't really imagine Homer doing oral porn (thank god lol)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Slade House for the group read. I'm now moving on to The Nix for another group's May/June read.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Well, that was short lived! I have abandoned Just One Damned Thing After Another. I thought it would be right up my street, but the reality turned out to be completely different. The first chapter was okay but it quickly went downhill. I thought there was no character development and the humour felt forced and silly. Also, I thought it was an adult novel but it felt more like young adult to me and not a very well written one at that. I struggled through to Chapter 5 but that's my lot.

Agreed. I like series under 5 books. Those are manageable.

message 664: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished Live Bait which is the second book in the Monkeewrench series. This one is as story about elderly Jews being killed and it brings back the police who were in the first book. It was a good book and a quick read.

Now I am halfway through Hannah's Dream Hannah's Dream by Diane Hammond which is such a sweet story. A man has been a handler for a female elephant, Hannah, since she was 3 years old. He has been with her for 40 years and has a special relationship with her. Before he can retire he wants to make sure she will be in good hands. I love elephant stories:)

I almost burst out laughing at my desk when I read that! Lunch break is over, time to go back to work before I start laughing and have to explain to my coworkers that I'm laughing about Homer and oral porn... on my work computer. I'll be turned in to the IT police! LOL

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished The City & the City and enjoyed it a lot. That setting blown my mind.

I started this morning We Have Always Lived in the Castle for the monthly read, and then I will resume Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women Who Helped Launch Our Nation into Space, which finally came back from the library after I had to return it before finishing it.

I love the Monkeewrench series! And I see #8 is supposed to be published this year. I have to keep my eyes on the lookout for this one.

I have Hannah's Dream on my tbr, I think I own a copy. I'll have to look and see.

message 670: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished reading Norse Mythology. I loved it. Gaiman and Norse mythology are two of my favourite things. I could see where Martin came up with his world in A Song of Ice and Fire now as well as other fantasy stories. I loved finding out how Thor got his hammer among other things. And how many of the creation myths are very similar. Making progress on The Nix which is fantastic.

Mariab | 3059 comments I'm reading Their Fractured Light for the Survey Ch.

message 672: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Strange the Dreamer yesterday. It was just okay.

I decided to pass on The Nix. It fell victim to that "not in the mood for this" syndrome.

New starts - On audiobook, The Visitant: A Venetian Ghost Story for the Survey challenge. On ebook, Story of O since it came up on my library hold.

message 673: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'm trying to read several books and not getting far on any of them. I've started The Magpie Lord, The Book Club Murders, Slade House, and Lover at Last. I feel like I'm not much in a reading mood, but I'm getting things done around the house that I've put off for too long.

message 674: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Come to my house, j'mom. I need someone to get me sorted and kill the dust bunnies. They all have fur coats, I'm afraid.

message 675: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Your dust bunnies must be related to mine, Janice!

I haven't been reading as much lately, nothing has suited my mood. I've been playing games on my kindle or phone instead of reading at bedtime. But I finally picked up a book to start on last night. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell.

I've still been listening to audiobooks for my commute though. I'm about halfway or a little less through Where'd You Go, Bernadette. It didn't seem like what I wanted to read/listen to when I started it, but there wasn't anything keeping my attention on the radio and this book was in the glove compartment ready to go. But, now I'm thoroughly enjoying it! I'm quite glad I started it.

message 676: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments I'm having a similar experience with the book I'm reading now, The Idea of You by Amanda Prowse. I'm just over 1/4 in and I was a bit bored by the first few chapters. This last chapter seems to have picked up though, so I'm hoping that's a good sign.

I'm also reading Three Little Words by Ashley Rhodes-Courter. It is a sad, but interesting, memoir by a woman that spent her childhood in foster care. It's difficult to see the system through her child's eyes, but I believe the story will end up being hopeful, as she did eventually make it out of the system and developed into a successful adult.

message 677: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Story of O and was quite disturbed by it. I made a comment recently that books should disturb us. You know, when you put something like that out into the universe, you're always tested. It's like I was told, "You said it, Janice. Now read some disturbing books." I'm not sure why I thought I wanted to read it. I had it on hold at the library and it came available the other day, so I read it.

I had started December on audiobook and couldn't get past the narration. I ordered the paperback and it's time to dig into it again. The Survey Challenge is waiting.

The dust/dirt/fur bunnies at my house are mostly undisturbed. I figure they are holding some things together :) I'm sort of reading my other books, but Lover at Last has me going to it automatically. Can't get enough of it.

That book has been on my radar before, but I'm sort of scared to read it because I know, like you said, it is going to be disturbing!

message 680: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which I enjoy and rated 4 stars.

I change my mind a few times before deciding what to read next. The plan was to resume Hidden Figures, but I'm not in a mood for non fiction right now.
Then I went for The Circle since I would like to watch the movie this summer, but I realized it has a 2.71 stars rating among my GR friends, so after reading a couple of reviews, I decided against it.
So I am restarting A Stranger in Mayfair, which I chose for last toppler but couldn't go farther than a few pages.

message 681: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The Circle has a 3.4 rating among my gr friends. My cousin lent it to me because she enjoyed it so much, but from the blurb I can't say I'm that interested in it.

message 682: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments Oops, I saw your comment in my review before this one.

I got interested in the book after seeing the movie trailer, but I felt discouraged after the reviews. Right now I don't feel like trying. It also is 500 pages long. I may try again in the summer before watching the movie.

Thoughts of the content are stuck in my head like a broken record. It's really a psychological study of why a woman would debase herself in such a way. I'm no further ahead in understanding. I'm rather horrified to be truthful.

It is a good series.

I loved Hannah. Such a sweet and good story. I needed a break from some heavy reading this year although I still cried at the end. Good tears though.

Lisa (ylisa7) | 208 comments I just finished A House in the Sky A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout which I thought was excellent. It's about a young woman taken and held hostage in Somalia for 460 days. Here is my review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I started The Pecan Man The Pecan Man and also The Tortilla Curtain Tortilla Curtain Both of these have been on my WTR list for a long time.

I just read a couple of reviews out of curiosity and even those were disturbing... No way I am reading this one.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The Visitant: A Venetian Ghost Story for my survey challenge. It's a gothic ghost story that fits right in with the group themed read.

Next up on audiobook is Elantris.

Margo | 11663 comments I finished Words of Radiance. Oh lord I'm going to have to stay away from fantasy for a while. I think all else will pale in comparison. Major book hangover :-(

message 689: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I felt exactly the same Margo! It's months later and I still am in awe and compare all fantasy to it even though I don't want to.

I recall there was a movie from the book, it is from the 70's, I thinkt... quite a fuss was made over it.
I can understand your disturbementm though; I tried recentlly The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (in the same line as you were: to challenge myself)... It got not good, I had to quit reading the book.

Look what I found!! I didn't know this existed! Edgedancer

edit: oh wait.. I think it was published in a collection of short stories but is not yet available as a separate book/story.

message 695: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments It is bad enough having to wait for as-yet-unfinished books to be published now we are waiting for for previously released ones lol Added it - thanks ;-)

Vividha Raghav (readers_panache) | 1 comments I'm reading Perfect - Cecelia Ahern

message 697: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That one is in the short story book which was released earlier in the year. I think it's a Cosmere collection. I am going to save that one until I've read the Mistborn series and the Stormlight series as there are stories in there which relate to both. Also possibly Elantris too.
