D.G. | 2752 comments Etched in Bone (The Others, #5) by Anne Bishop
Shelf #2: PNR
Date finished/Rating: 2/2 ★★★½

The main plot of this book annoyed the hell out of me. How is it that The Others keep falling for the same trick over and over again? They're not stupid, they should have learned by now! With so many powerful people at their disposal, they should know how to manage security to make sure the weakest links in the Courtyard are protected no matter what happens! Arrrghhhhh!

Also, I wished the punishment of the bad guy wouldn't have been fade to black. I would have wanted to know how afraid he was in his last few minutes.

The only good thing about this book was that it was solely focused on the Courtyard and that the relationship of Simon & Meg definitely moved to a romantic one.

I think I'm going to read this one because I have it and need to read it:
The Wedding (The Notebook, #2) by Nicholas Sparks

Yeah, it was very hurtful and disappointing. I've cried a lot since yesterday. But anyhow, it's just a job. My husband was all like - "quit if you want right now!" We're not rich but he has a good job and we're careful to live below our means. However, I'm not giving them the satisfaction of leaving without a new job after they stabbed me in the back. I'll leave when I'm good and ready. If there's a lesson I've learned though is that I need to start being smarter and less trusting of people at work.

On top of that, I've had a fever since yesterday and got my period. Fun times!!!

Ugh! When it rains it pours - why is it always like that??? What a horrible day, D.G. Hopefully you got to come home last night to some wine and ice cream and watch a good movie or read a good book last night... Office politics (or backstabbing) can be the worse - not to mention piling on all the other stuff.

message 109: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Yay for such a great husband!!!

Sounds like a new & better job coming up, hopefully :) Backstabbing, treacherous people are the absolute worst. You need to be able to trust your co-workers, after all you all work for the same company. Sadly that's often not true and people seem to be all out for themselves. Hopefully karma will get them!!

Hope the fever is gone soon as well as the period.

The Wedding (The Notebook, #2) by Nicholas Sparks
Shelf: Guilty Pleasures | Tagged 10x
Book: The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
Date Read: 2/2/17
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Review: This is another book I've had for awhile and have been meaning to get around to reading. Nicholas Sparks is good for some tears and this one was no different. However, it was one of those books that almost sounded like a self-help book for the first three-fourths.. A little dry... a little boring... This story was about a husband who is taking stock of the state of his marriage after 20 years of being together. Their 3 children are grown and out of the house and they are wondering if they are "happy" and if they have anything still in common. The story is from the husband's POV, who appears to maybe be more at fault... and his approach to stepping up his game. I really enjoyed the last quarter of the book ~ although I'm not gonna lie ~ it definitely brought on some water-works!

D.G. | 2752 comments Wow, K-Terror! You're fast!

Thanks for all your kind words, ladies. I'm feeling a lot better - mostly staying home sick has helped to vent a bit. My husband - as usual - has been great and very supportive.

I'm trying to be practical and not to let hurt feelings govern my actions. In the time that I've been there, I've seen many good people who have spent their whole careers there being shown the door because of the bottom line.

I've been interviewing for a position with another department next week. If that doesn't work, I'll look in other companies.

There were tons of things going on this time around. Almost too much because I had a hard time keeping it all straight - and I'm still not sure about some of it. It also ended with one hell of a cliffhanger so make sure you have book 7 ready. It should be interesting to see how things play out.

Dead Beautiful (Dead Beautiful, #1) by Yvonne Woon
Week 2 Shelf: Paranormal Romance
Date Read: 2/4/17
Rating: ★★★1/2
Review:
Dead Beautiful was an interesting story. There were some similarities to Harry Potter and Twilight, to be sure, but the story held its own with that. I liked Renee and was curious why she seemed to always be able to find the dead, but that got explained towards the end. What might be considered a twist at the end I guessed pretty early in the story, so that wasn't a surprise at all, but I still enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading the next book in the series - hopefully this month.

Review:
I ended up enjoying this book so much more than I anticipated. I don't know if I had the bar set low or what, but usually I can get bored during the world-building parts of fantasy books. This one didn't get all caught up in a lot of those details so, for me, that was a plus! Also, there was romance involved - which can be a turn-off for some, but I'm always more invested in a story if there are hearts involved! I really felt the story had a good pace and was able to connect with many of the characters. Definitely recommend if you are not hard-core fantasy reader like me.

There was something off about this book. I didn't feel the humor or the chemistry and the plot was non existent. BFFs in love who are so fearful of losing the friendship that they pretend what they have is just a hookup.

I really never understand why if they were supposedly so close, they couldn't be honest. This drove me bunkers most of the book. There was just no reason whatsoever for all the fears, when it was so obvious they were into each other.

Shelf #3: Guilty Pleasures
Date finished/Rating: 2/12 ★★★
Marrying Winterborne was going great until around half the book, where the hero pretty much disappears and just shows up again at the end to deal with the villain and plan an elopement.

Part of the problem was that the setup occurred in "Cold-Hearted Rake", the first book in the series. By the time this book starts, they are already in love and start sleeping together soon thereafter. If Ms. Kleypas would developed those plot points a bit slower, she could have had a heck of a book.

Review:
This is such an emotionally-charged book that I'm not sure of how to review it. It was so powerful that it almost hurt. Darling Cruel is by far the most tortured hero I've ever read in any book EVER. The brutality he had to endure was so descriptive that you cringed while reading it. But the torture he went through was just a piece of the story. The majority was of his journey out of his emotional (and physical) hell.

It was awesome to read about his friendship with Maris - you don't often read about a friendship between males that is that honest and pure. Granted one of them is gay, BUT that was not why their friendship was so solid. Had Darling not had Maris he most certainly would have never made it to adulthood with any type of sanity.

My only problem with the story is that Kere (aka Darling) and Zyara's relationship had been going on for 2 years and in all that time she had never see his face. Granted stories about space warriors and such are far-fetched but the fact that she had never seen his face really aggravated me. It was not in Zyara's character to have something like that being hidden for so long. But if that's the only problem with a book then that's a good thing.

All the characters from previous books play a big role in this one so it kind of brought the whole group of them together as a big family. Now I'm ready to read Maris's story. He so deserves to find someone who can return the love that he is so capable of giving.

Review:
I liked Katy, for the most part. I say most part because I hate when girls act the way she did with Daemon. Daemon was annoying and I didn't like him, at all, for most of the book. Dee was my favorite character, but she seemed immature for her age. Since for a large part of the book I was bored and/or annoyed with the characters behavior, I don't see myself continuing this series.
