Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments I hated that it was a non-winning shelf too. Thankfully I had a book that fit. I had glanced a little at the shelves for the game when they were first put up and there seemed to be lots of books on the shelves that would work for me. I just don't want to start another series - there are so many that I'm right in the middle of. Steampunk is a shelf that I'm going to have a hard time with. I'll have to look more closely but from what I saw nothing caught my interest.
Got through the first chapter in Spider's Bite. I liked the short stories but not sure about it. I may have to switch Free Space books if it doesn't get any better.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 232 comments I finished both of my books today and will post the completions when I get on the computer.

I'm going to have a hard time with steampunk shelf too, Kim!

Sandra | 25908 comments Except that you can't win if all called shelves aren't stamped. It was a new rule implemented for this & future Rounds.

Specifically designed to stop exactly what you just outlined D.G., cause it isn't fair to other team mates who read the shelf.

Megan (celtic_girl) | 464 comments Finished my free space book, will try to get the review up tonight, and am working on my Hunters book.

message 55: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I really like that rule change, Sandra. Not only to be fair to teammates but that will help with the competition. I've been in teams where we get every single stamp and the winner ends up not getting even get half but just enough to win.

That said, I think important rule changes should be called out in the sign in post as us old timers usually don't take time to read the rules. :)

message 56: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I feel you, Kim. I'm not in the mood to start new series either.

Re-Hunters. I already DNFed one of the few books I had for it. Back at square one!

message 57: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I think for Hunters, I'll have to go with a re-read of one of the IAD series as I see several in the shelf.

I'm tempted to go with Lothaire but I've relistened to that one like a million times, LOL so I'll probably try one of the others.

Blood Bound (Unbound, #1) by Rachel Vincent
Shelf: Free Space | Option 3 | SOS Bookshelf
Book: Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent
Date Read: 1/20/17
Rating: ★★★★☆
Review: I've had this book on my TBR since January of last year and now I'm wondering why it took me so long to read it! I was expecting to get a lot of introductions and have to sort through a lot of world building before I got to the good stuff. But, YAY, I enjoyed this story right from the start and it kept my interest throughout. Liv and Cam had awesome chemistry and the story grabbed me when I found out it involved her old friends from school and their re-connections. The story was very well written and fast-paced, making it impossible to put the book down until finished. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

The Rest Falls Away (The Gardella Vampire Hunters Victoria, #1) by Colleen Gleason

Book: The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason
Date Read: 1/21/2017
Rating: ☆☆☆
Review: This one has been on my TBR shelf for 2 years and I have to admit, I had trouble getting into the story. The plot was okay and the writing was fine but I felt no connection to any of the main characters and there was not anything really out of the ordinary in the story to capture my interest - until the ending. Although the ending left me hanging, I'm not sure I care enough to read through the second book. I'll probably check out the reviews and see before jumping in to the next book ~ especially given it's a 10-book series. To me it seemed like your standard vampire hunter story.

Yep, I take your point D.G.

We've actually implemented a whole new Rules Thread this Round cause it was getting a bit messy without one.

Kim Shumaker (kim_shumaker) | 707 comments Sorry D.G. but I'm changing my Free Space book to Born of Ice by Sherrilyn Kenyon - Option 3 - SOS Bookshelf.

I've only read to Chapter 3 in Spider's Bite. It's just not grabbing my attention. I'll eventually get through it but wanted to go ahead and get my Free Space out of the way.

Review:
I absolutely loved this book. I listened to the audiobook in one sitting. The story moved quickly and there was the definite fall in love overnight thing going...but I loved Devyn and Alix. I'm not sure what I loved most - Alix's love for her baby sister, Devyn's love for his son or their love for each other. Syn and Shahara made an appearance as well as Paden, Syn's oldest son from his first marriage. So far the only thing I don't like about the series is the back and forth of Gen 1 and Gen 2. If you like fast paced sci-fi action this series is for you.

D.G. | 2752 comments Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, #4) by Kresley Cole
Shelf #1: Hunters
Date finished/Rating: 1/24 ★★★½
Review: This is the third time I re-read this book and it amazes me how my perspective changes between reads. The first time I really liked Bowen's conflict, in the second re-read, I found him annoying as hell, and now in the third, I understand the author gave him lots of opportunities for growth (which he definitely needed.) I mean, who the hell thinks about trying to impregnate a woman the first time he sleeps with her?

Something else I noticed in this re-read was how Mariketa took charge of her destiny. She was the one calling the shots during the mating and she had the big badass fight with the villain. Bowen was almost like her sidekick!

This series is totally worth it, specially if you're listening.

Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine
Free Space: Option 2 - SOS BEST OF: Young Adult Fantasy Series
Date Read: 1/20/17

Review:
This was an okay novel. I was interested right away, but then became less interested as the story unfolded. I thought Claire was very naive, even with her being 16, for someone supposedly so smart. My favorite characters were Eve and Shane, two of her housemates. They were a lot of fun and almost every scene with them was funny when it was supposed to be and always enjoyable. I'm planning to read the next book in the series, but it's not something I'm rushing to do.

I've definitely missed my Anita Blake!!!! I was rolling right through these during another challenge promoting 'series' reads and then hadn't touched them for a couple months. This story did not disappoint with the trio back in action - Anita, Jean Claude & Richard.. And when I say action, I mean all sorts of action!

This story picked up from the last book and was fast-paced like usual so I was able to gobble it up in a day. I'm so glad to have Richard come back around and be a rational dude and join in on the fun. Plus, as with every book, they are picking up some strays along the way.

D.G. | 2752 comments Hello Hexers!

I have the ARC for Etched in Bone (The Others, #5) by Anne Bishop so I'm reading it for Paranormal Romance (not technically PNR but tons of people have shelved it as such.)

I'm finding the plot a bit contrived...anyhow, let's see.

Review:
Another insane ride on what is Charlie's life. Fifth Grave Past the Light is full of twists and turns. Charlie almost made it through the whole book without getting the crap beat out of her and Cookie most definitely needs a warning sticker on her forehead. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments as Charlie's ADD was at an all-time high.

It was a good book and moved quickly but seemed just a little off. It seemed to be just a continuation of Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet. Normally it's a good thing when a book picks up where the other left off but this felt like more of a filler for a good part of the book. I kept thinking "okay this is good but what's the point....where is this going"?

Cookie needs to hook up with Ubie quickly - I don't remember her being portrayed as such a dingbat or swooning at every Tom, Dick and Harry in earlier books. Reyes was not quite as overbearing this time around. Now that he's moved in next door and is the new cook at her Dad's bar we see a little more normal guy and less Son of Satan. Her description of their relationship is worthy of the kind of laugh that you do out loud that causes other people to think you're not quite stable.
Our relationship was a lot like underwear in a dryer without a static control sheet. One minutes we were floating through life, buoyant and carefree. The next we were attached at the crotch.

How on earth does Ms. Jones come up with the stuff? This is what has kept me addicted to the series.

And leaving the best for last - Garrett Swopes. I just love him. I don't know why...maybe it's the way he calls her "Charles" or how he treats her like a kid sister that he must annoy or the delicious description of his hot abs...but whatever it is I want more of him. I think he and Charlie have more chemistry than her and Reyes.

Okay Charlie's ADD is contagious - back to Garret's part of the story. We learn more of his visit to Hell. The Why and the Who sent him there comes to light as well as some of his personal history that I didn't see coming. Garrett's bombshell of information answers some questions but brings up so many more. I'm going to have to go back and reread that part because I think it may be a pivotal point in the story arc.

So while it was not my all-time favorite it had enough laughs to make it worth reading. I'm definitely looking forward to Book 6.

Review:
This was a fun read and I enjoyed it a lot. There were some twists that I didn't see coming and others that were kind of obvious, at least to me. Gia was a great MC, strong and caring. The love interest(s) were okay, but I definitely prefer Arik over Bastien. The way the story ended was good, but I definitely want to read the next book, Guardian of Secrets, as soon as I can.
