Book: Storm Front by Jim Butcher
Read: 16. Feb. 2017.
Rating: 4 stars
Spot: Vampires
How it fits: shelved 343 times as 'vampires'
I read Storm Front 4 years ago and it didn't leave big impression on me. But since it very popular, I decided to give it another chance.
I liked it better the second time around. Maybe I matured? (I did notice that usual romance plot started to bore me).
Harry still reminded me of shabbier version of Humphrey Bogart (or at least the detective role he played in movies). There is trench-coat and damsel in distress. But I didn't mind it so much this time.
And Bob and the rest of paranormal secondary characters were as amusing as ever.
I will continue with this series and see how it goes.

Glass Houses - Rachel Caine

Shelf: Vampires
How it Fits: #1501 on the Vampires list
Review: Claire Danvers is very smart and ends up in Morganville at Texas Prairie University at 16. By 6 weeks in her life is miserable being bullied by Monica and her clique. When a near fatal beating makes her fear for her life she looks for a place to live off-campus and ends up at Glass House. Three 18 year-olds live there, Eve, Shane, and Michael who owns the house and they are reluctant to let someone so young reside there. But another attack makes them want to protect her. The town is not what it seems at first and soon Claire finds out about the vampires who run it and the rules needed to survive.
OK story with suspense but definitely for teens; little in-depth character development and adults are one dimensional.

Review: Another great story in the House of Night Series. Now we find Zoey Redbird feeling alone since the last book. Aphrodite has returned and is still mean but can be nice. Zoey and Aphrodite are starting to become good friends.
Finally Zoe comes clean and tells her friends everything about Stevie Rae, Neferet and why she could not let them in on knowing everything. The fact that Neferet is a physic and would be able to find out that Zoe and her friends know what is going on is why her friends had to be kept in the dark.
Now that they all know they are willing to help Zoey and Aphrodite at any time. I loved how Zoey has grown into her powers. She is starting to realize that she can do great things and is staying on the good side of everything.
Zoey's grandmother also makes an appearance in this book. We also meet the Sisters of the Stray Cat Rescue. I loved the Sisters!! They were entertaining. There is evil being raised. Zoe and her friends must stop this raising during a cleansing ritual. Will they be able to prevent the demons being raised that would kill all those who are human and stand in the way of the 'True Goddess'?
The ending left me a little sad but I am very interested in seeing what the next book has in store.

I really enjoyed that Betsy came to conclusions on her own and her character is starting to grow and evolve.
Much more soul searching and drawing parallels between her and Laura's behavior/attitudes and a whole lot less whining.
I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first ten Undead books and likes a serious dose of humor.
I would suggest a little less in Betsy's head and a little more action earlier on.

Review: Mercy Thompson is a VW mechanic and a skinwalker who can change into a coyote at will. Her next door neighbor is the Alpha of the local werewolf pack. So when a young newly turned werewolf appears at her shop looking for work she introduces him to her neighbor for shelter and help in accepting his new life. However, before he is even acclimated, he is attacked at Adam's house, Adam is wounded and Adam's daughter is kidnapped. So begins an adventure that brings Mercy into working with the pack, her former employer who is a gremlin and a local vampire who's car she does repair work on. Lots of action and a well defined world. Looking forward to more in this series.

I will be reading

So the moving day has finally arrived. I was busy all week cleaning, packing etc. At night I was too tired to get into 'Gospel of Loki'. I read one page and fall asleep. :)
I will have to pick some lighter book for mythology shelf and futuristic.

And for mythology I am switching my book to

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The beginning was fascinating and trapped me in no time. Then the real introduction to the characters was a little confusing. But I stayed with the book and enjoyed the development of each person and how they interacted with each other. So stay with it, it's definitely worth the read.

Review:
I loved this book. I'm so glad I bought this series at a library book sale. Something strange happens to David, Amy, Jalil, and Chris one day. They find themselves going from one place to another place.
They try to figure out which one is real, or if they are in a dream. David and the others all go back to the 'real world' and start to discuss things. I found it entertaining as they would be asleep in Everworld and fall asleep and find themselves back in their world.
Are they able to find Senna? Do they need to rescue her? Is she the one causing all this? Is she the 'witch' Loki speaks about? Those are some of the questions you ask yourself in this book.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Sorry for being late, but we moved, so now there should be no hold up. I am starting book for futuristic shelf today.

Did you pick a book for futuristic shelf Monica?

Book: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews
Read: 06. Mar. 2017.
Rating: 4 stars
Spot: Mythology
How it fits: shelved 59 times as 'mythology'
Kate Daniels is one of my favorite series, but I didn't read Gunmetal Magic because I never liked Andrea very much. But... I was yearning for a new book by Ilona Andrews and since I have already read everything else, I picked this one up after all.
Gunmetal Magic was not bad at all. It had all the elements of Kate Daniels books:
+ Complex world building
+ Intriguing mystery
+ Quirky pack dynamics
+ Lovable side characters
+ Rarely used elements from different mythologies (Norse, Egyptian, ...)
+ A lot of weird paranormal creatures
+ Nail-bitting action scenes
+ Roman was one of main characters. I loved him in the last book and he was awesome here too. I hope rumors that he is getting his own series are true!
The one thing that was missing was Kate as main character. her snarky narration adds that special element to this series that upgrades it from 4 to 5 stars...
Gunmetal Magic pleasantly surprised me. Don't be afraid to give it a go. Just make sure to read novella Magic Gifts before, because some events from this novella are referenced in this book.

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel
Read: 3/9/17
Rating: 5 stars
#156 on the Futuristic shelf
Review: At the beginning of this post-apocalyptic novel actor Arthur Leander has a heart attack on stage and dies. It is the same day that the pandemic Georgian Flu is unleashed. Within a few weeks only 1% of the population will survive. Kirsten Raymonde is an 8 year old child actor in the same play who survives. The story follows her life over the next 20 years, looks at the life of Arthur and his ex-wives up to the point of the pandemic and beyond, and looks at the life of Arthur's best friend, Clark Thomas. Kirsten becomes part of the Traveling Symphony, a caravan of actors and musicians, banding together on a circuitous route for survival and to maintain a remnant of civilization. We get the backstory on several of the members as well. The climax of the story is an encounter with a man calling himself “The Prophet” and his band of 'enlightened.'
This one of the best post-apocalyptic novels I've read with a plausible catastrophe and a well thought out immediately following period. Often we get a picture of an established new society and see how it went wrong. This aftermath is the immediate reaction, the coming to terms, and the survival struggle. Dark but hopeful.

This is my favorite series of all time. After 43 books you would think I would be getting bored with the series but I am not. I love the characters and the storylines. I just got Echoes in Death and I can't wait to get started on it (hopefully it will fit a shelf soon).

About That Night - Julie James
Read: 3/15/17
Rating: 4 stars
#24 on the Snarky Heroine shelf
Review: When Kyle Rhodes and Rylann Pierce met in grad school sparks flew but then Kyle was a no show for their first date. Nine years later they meet again as US Attorney and ex-con who need to work together on a case. Sparks fly again but both are in awkward places in their jobs and life. Both coming off bad relationships doesn't help.
This is a good story of how both sort out their lives and allow themselves a chance at a relationship. I had read the story of Kyle's twin, #2 in the series and was interested in seeing how the Kyle from that story would develop. I was pleasantly satisfied.
