Donnajo | 4354 comments 2017 Determination Plus Challenge

Let's try this together. Have some fun. Those that have been with us awhile remember the old Determination (DL) lists we used to do every year. Well let's try one again with a twist The Determination Plus Challenge.

Books 1-10-Pick 10 books (audios, ebooks, whatever) that you either want to get off your To Be Read owned shelves or books you have been wanting to read for awhile and haven't.

The next 7 books is the Plus part of the challenge almost like a bonus. Below is the prompts you find the book you want to read to fill each in.

11. A new author's first book (could be also a new to you author who you never read before).

12. A book set in a different country than you live in.

13. A book that is a different genre than your usual reading books (whatever you don't usually read).

14 & 15. Two books from a series you started and haven't completed yet (could be a book from 2 different series doesn't matter as long as you get two books in) (I know we all have a series or two that we haven't finished yet).

16. A book that comes out in 2017. (I know this will be a easy one for you to fill).

17. A book that was recommended to you by someone (friend, family, librarian, stranger, anyone).

Just remember have fun. You can either pick the books ahead if you want or as you go along. Just let us know what you read below (or want to read). Set up a post below and go back in and edit as you move along.

Let's get some of those books off our TBR lists or shelves.

I haven't had a determination list in a few years but may try again this year. I certainly have plenty of books in the tbr piles (real stacks and virtual/digital stacks) Jan O'Cat always said a stack of seventeen books was the ideal size.
So we start our list as one post and come back to fill it in what we read later by editing. Should be interesting.
Edit: I'll plan to read / finish these as a start (more to come)
1. A Clean Kill in Tokyo Rain Fall to replace Dead in the Family
2. Brilliance
3. READ 24-Mar Cold Cold Heart
4. Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink
5. Algorithms to Live By: What Computers Can Teach Us About Solving Human Problems
6. Hearts in Suspension
7. Love, Africa: Two Roads Home
8. READ 26-Dec-2017 Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist
9. READ 23-Dec-2017 Petty: The Biography
10. READ 21-Dec-2017The Question of the Missing Head

Bonus
11. READ 01-Mar Starvation Lake by Bryan Gruley (new to me/ 1st series book A New author's first book (could be also a new to you author)

12. READ 05-Feb The Dry Australia - A book set in a different country than you live in.

13. READ 16-Feb Shelter in Place A book that is a different genre than you usually read. Not a MT, memoir, biography, YA or fantasy, so fiction -- different. ;)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16959 comments DonnaJo
I see your point about deciding which slot to list a Bonus determination list book. I decided to list the Bonus Books as I go and if I decide to move them around to a different Bonus line later I think that would be ok. (Like a series book in a different county too or released in 2017 too) Flexibility!
I haven't listed a full set of ten books I am determined to read yet but started a list of those (and have not gotten to any yet) I guess I should try for one a month.

message 18: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4354 comments I think that is a good idea it is easier being able to move it between the two. At first I but the latest one on top because of another enroute book that is expected but that one will fit in another spot if I end up reading it otherwise I move the book again.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3500 comments I have read 3 of the 4 books of the Raj Quartet, my challenge. It will be good to get it off the shelf.

WTG for finishing the Challenge. I've been bad and kept forgetting to come and check what is happening here and updating my own post. I can probably add a book to new out from the arcs I've done but I'm holding that one empty if I get the the MHC one that is waiting at the library for me. Also can probably consider the man called Ove as a recommended one.
I think all my challenges are doing better this year than I expected. Especially since it's only April.

I wasn't sure if I would join this, have been watching the topic grow in numbers but just decided to open it back up and read what you all are doing. Looks like fun, I'm in! I could fill half the list with stuff I've read so far this year but that feels like cheating. So I'll start fresh now. I'll come back and fill in the books as I "determine" what I will read. I will also stay away from books I know I'll read anyway (Louise Penny, John Sandford, etc.)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16959 comments Carol: it's good to see your challenges. It is rather fun. I expect to fill a few more in soon, and every time I see one of the titles I listed to try to read I remember my intent and am motivated to consider when they might rise to the top of the piles. 😀

message 49: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16959 comments Good plan Carol! I've added a book to my list, Love, Africa: Two Roads Home (edited message 3) which I have in print which usually means I need an extra nudge to get to. I need to replace one, not sure what it will be but the Sookie Stackhouse series has stagnated for me with Dead in the Family. (At least on audio) i updated my count, having read 7 of the 17, not terrible for almost mid-year I guess.
