Katie | 7 comments Hi, everyone!
I'm wondering if anyone's read a YA book written probably within the last 5-8 years. I read it as a Kindle eBook. I'm not sure if they still have this feature, but I originally found the book under Amazon's old "Top 100 Free eBooks" section of the genre you wanted, in this case it was under 'Teen & Young Adult.'
The book's story was about a girl, possibly orphaned, who was a very skilled fighter in a community whose homes were trees. She didn't have friends because she had a male rival who beat, mocked, and belittled her in public and made her an outcast. The two used to be friends until his brother died and he blamed her for it. He also hated her because he thought his brother loved her more than him. The brother died while on his way to give the girl a locked box containing information about her family or parents or magical powers or something. The box wasn't found with the brother's body. Anyway, the girl got hurt somehow and she subconsciously crawled her way to this boy's family tree, where the boy found her and nursed her back to health. They made up and they ended up looking for this box by hiding at a house party or something, but I don't remember the rest. I think this was a world that you needed a magical stick to get into a home or something. I also think she might've been responsible for accidentally starting a giant fire or causing an earthquake or some sort of natural disaster that someone important died in or some important tree was ruined.
I hope that was enough information. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I accidentally deleted it.

Thank you!
Katie

You've put in some good details. Every month or so give it a bump to keep it at the top of the list.

Katie, what kind of fighter is the girl (e.g., street fighter, martial arts, environmental activist)?

Do the people live above the ground in trees? Are they human or fantastical creatures like elves?

Katie | 7 comments Hi,
The girl is a martial arts fighter, I think.
I imagined that the people who live in the trees start at ground level and take stairs up once inside, and that each tree's trunk has a door or entryway of some kind. The community lived in a forest from what I can remember, hence the tree homes and why a fire would've been a big deal.
I think this girl herself lived in a tree with an old lady. She was possibly an important member of the community or she was an older relative, but I'm not sure.

A guess - Frey by Melissa Wright?

message 10: by Katie (new)

Katie | 7 comments Ha! You know, that's half of it. The boy isn't the same but the world in Frey is definitely the one I've pictured. Weirder plot than I imagined, but it's close enough. Amazing guess, Kris, thank. you. I don't need to know the other book that I got fused with this one. Thanks a ton. Seriously.
