Female author: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

message 64: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (shelbador) | 155 comments I finished reading Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris.

Overall, I found the book to be a captivating psychological-horror that touched on the topic of abuse, specifically marital abuse. The first-person narration threw me off at first but eventually I found myself enjoying the story being told through the eyes of Grace. I found the characters particularly interesting, especially Jack and Millie.

I highly recommend this book to you all! While I was taken aback by certain moments in the book, there was one scene that was particularly difficult. I will not go into detail but if any of you read the book, let me know so we can discuss that scene and the book as a whole more in-depth!

I gave this book four (4) stars out of five (5). The absence of the last star was due to the ending... It felt rushed to me.

READ.THIS.BOOK.

message 73: by M (last edited Jan 16, 2017 12:08PM) (new)

M (youarenotatree) I'm in! I'm new to the group but I will definitely be reading a non-fiction, yThe Ethical Slut: A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities about polyamory. Finished! I loved this book, I've been waiting to get my hands on it for quite a long time and it lived up to all my expectations. Even for people who have never had an interest in polyamory, I think it's an awesome book on communication and relationships and setting boundaries in your life while opening all your horizons, that everyone should read. I immediately left it on my roommate's bed to spread the wealth. 5 stars.

, and I need to finish up Abhorsenfrom last year (a book with magic) Finished! I was pretty sure I had read this book before, but the ending still came as somewhat of a surprise to me so I'm wondering if I ever finished. I really liked this book and I'm excited to read the next in the series, but I've taken a break from it for a bit to read other things. The library book is sitting on my nightstand calling to me, though.

and follow it up with the sequel "Clariel", which is a book by an author I love that I've never read before!

I'm also waiting to get Adulthood Rites by Octavia Butler through interlibrary loan which is a book written by a woman! I just got this from the library and started yesterday.

I also finished All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation which was an awesome, awesome read and I recommend it to any feminists or women looking to carve their own path in life. It was an awesome follow-up to "The Ethical Slut". Also 5 stars

And I already reread The Raven Boys in like one sitting and it was magical, as always.

I also finished Angela's Ashes because it's been sitting on my tbr list for literally years and I'm so proud of myself for getting through it, I even ended up liking it a lot! 4 stars!

message 82: by Shelby (last edited Jan 02, 2017 12:51AM) (new)

Shelby (shelbador) | 155 comments In the wee hours of Jan. 2, 2017, I finished reading Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

The Illuminae series has become my absolute favorite series! What started with Kady and Ezra continues with Hanna and Nik, the story being just as good, possibly better! Kaufman and Kristoff draw readers in with a new BeiTech-caused disaster and throws them through the many walls of emotion... The plot twists!

The design of the book is amazing. I love the document-style layout and overall unique page layout. Illuminae and Gemina are the prettiest books I have read. That on its own adds two (2) stars to my rating!

Honestly, I cannot gush enough about this book (and series)! If you love yourself, you will read this series and lose yourself in the adventures of the young heroes in the Illuminae series.

I gave this novel five (5) stars out of five (5).

Super excited!! Happy New Year everyone!

message 85: by Abby (last edited Jan 30, 2017 10:44AM) (new)

Abby (abby_doodle-bug) Okay, for this challenge I'll be reading:

-A book by a female author: Their Fractured Light by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner (do I get bonus points for two female authors on one book?? =P) 5/5 stars, I loved the way everything was tied together in the end and all my favorites lived. Well written and a super interesting story.
-A historical fiction: Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett I only gave this one 2/5 stars. While the historical context was well researched and interesting, the characters were all one dimensional at best. The female characters were little more than plot devices and love interests for the male characters, all while this book is trying to discuss civil rights. Even worse, the one defining quality of any POC characters was their skin color. This book was longer than it needed to be by far at 1098 pages, and the plot was repetitive if there wasn't a major historical event in play.
-A book I previously read: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone/Chamber of Secrets because I have illustrated editions and they make me cry. I finished sorcerer's stone and I still love it 7/5 they're good dogs brent.
I finished Chamber of Secrets! 8/5 still good dogs + Ginny.

I added a book because it's finally available at the library!
- Read a book published in 2016: Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff 5/5 stars for this one! I still love the formatting, and I love the characters. It was hard-ish to follow at times but I can't wait for the next book in this series!

And with that my reading challenge is finished!

message 89: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy (bookwormchrissy) | 44 comments Yesterday I finished A Northern Light which was my first book for this challenge.

I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Unfortunately, nothing about the book really stood out to me, positively or negatively.
I liked all of the characters just fine. They were all well-rounded and interesting, but for some reason I didn't really get emotionally invested in their stories. Considering that the book was inspired by the murder of Grace Brown, I would have expected the murder to play a larger role, but in my opinion it could almost have been left out entirely. While the first half of the book felt really slow to me (at times I was even a little bored) the ending felt a little rushed.

All in all, I did like the book, but not even close to as much as I loved These Shallow Graves last year.

Amanda Driggs I finished my re-read of Pride and Prejudice today. It never gets old.

I'm happy I chose to start my year with an old favorite. It supplied a relaxing, romantic feel to the beginning of the year. And classy:)

I watched the most Joe Wright film adaptation after I finished. I can never shake how different Mr Bennet is in the book vs the film. Donald Sutherland is so much more dignified than the character in the books. In the book, Mr Bennet seems much more like a bitter old man (at least to me). Not nearly as nice and grandfatherly as Donald Sutherland.
