Ann (annrumsey) | 16981 comments I am finally getting a chance to list my November books read; now halfway through December. Whew, where is the time going?
It was a pretty good month, there are some short ones on the list, but books don't have to be long to be good or worthwhile.
Exhume
The Whistler
Witness to a Trial (companion to The Whistler)
Six Scary Stories
A Gentleman in Moscow (the best of the month)
Life or Death
The Kept Woman
Listen to Me
Heat Lightning

Girard, Danielle Exhume Kindle read 11/5/2016 Rank 6 of 10
There is a lot going on in this book, the details overbearing and full of red herrings. Too much telling instead of showing and the main character's actions were often maddening. Not a fan but I won a copy so wanted to give it a try

Grisham, John The Whistler Audible Audio read 11/5/2016 Rank 9.45 of 10
A different pace from the perspective of an investigation into Judicial corruption, but no less nerve wracking and suspenseful. It's about the evidence, it's about the risks of uncovering the truth, and the risks of not doing so. Hard to put it down.

Grisham, John Witness to a Trial Epub read 11/8/2016 Rank 8.5 of 10 (when read as a companion)
A complement to The Whistler whether read before or after. Short but informative back story. Not sure that it stands alone though.

King, Stephen (editor) Six Scary Stories Kindle read 11/12/2016 Rank 9 of 10 These are an excellent group of stories! I had planned to read them leading up to Halloween but ended up reading most after. Good nonetheless.

Towles, Amor A Gentleman in Moscow Overdrive Audio Read 11/12/2016 Rank 9.65 of 10
I love this book; even more than I loved Rules of Civility, and that is saying something. The story and narration resonate far beyond the page and I was transported to a time and place, but also deep into my own consciousness as the dignity of a man surviving amidst outside turmoil but with inner peace shines through the years

Robotham, Michael Life or Death Overdrive Audio Read 11/18/2016 rank 9.5 of 10
A compelling question holds your interest while various timelines past and present seem destined to finally reveal why a man escaped from prison one day before his release. What promise or secret is so important? The rousing end more than makes up for moments of let's hurry this up. Recommend; settle in and follow the clues.

Slaughter, Karin The Kept Woman Will Trent #8 Audible Audio Read 11/23/2016 Rank 9.5 of 10
Angie is back. In many ways this is Angie's book as well as it is Will's so as a result the conflicts are highly charged and intense as a case is solved by the GBA with plenty of time with Sara, Faith and Amanda. For fans of the Grant County books, most definitely satisfying even with Angie.

Pittard, Hannah Listen to Me Overdrive Audio Read 11/4/2016 Rank 9 of 10
A short yet introspective glimpse at the motivations, fears and longing we carry in our hearts. The impact on our relationships and our own actions are often set aside as we muddle through daily life but when we slow down and have to stop to think about our lives and our next steps the truth often comes out.

Sandford, John Heat Lightning Virgil Flowers #2 Audio CD Read 11/30/2016 Rank 9 of 10
I have come to understand that just as with the Prey series, you can't go wrong with a Virgil Flowers book. Just the right amount of police procedure (state level) and a puzzling case with political and international intrigue and a bit of personal relationship details to add interest.

Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments I too loved Rules of Civility and need to get to A Gentleman in Moscow soon.

I've been having a great time catching up with both Virgil and Lucas this year.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16981 comments Sandi: Me too, though I have a long way to go to catch up on Lucas.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9507 comments I envy you both having books left in the Virgil Flowers and Lucas Davenport series. I gobble them up as they come out, and have been toying with the idea of starting over with the Davenport series. The only thing stopping me is too many hours in the head of textbook serial killers in the first few. And a very different--brash and violent--Lucas. Might be interesting though.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16981 comments Carol: I rarely reread, but I see your point, revisiting the younger brasher Lucas after knowing the possibly mellower recent Lucas could be interesting.
(having listened to a few of the Prey books wildly out of order I can relate .. I've read 3-4; 7-13; 15-18; and 24) :) I know this revelation will drive RIO's crazy...

BarryP (barrypz) | 3501 comments I felt Lucas mellowed because he aged. Flowers was brought in to allow the younger action figure type star.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16981 comments Barry: that seems likely. Characters do need to evolve as they age in a series.
