For this Weeks theme we will be asking that you read...

a book that is a Fairytale Retelling. If you need suggestions we can give you some. I am sure we have all read some good ones.

message 2: by Christina (new)

Christina (cmb1987) For this week I'm going to read The Great Hunt. This is a retelling of The Singing Bone by The Brothers Grimm.

I'm going to actually restart the second book in the splintered trilogy.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Probably not going to do this challenge since I think I want to finish reading the Harry Potter series since I never read it.
But I might pick up Heartless a retellings of the red queen from wonderland in between but from the looks of it might not.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be reading Queen of Hearts (Queen of Hearts Saga #1) by Colleen Oakes for this challenge.

WoW. That was quick but it also depends on what time midnight started for you last night.

R.J. Abell | 682 comments Ok ladies and gents....

Throw out some spectacular re-tellings that you've read...I love this genre so I want a lot to choose from :) I may or may not be heading into a reading slump...I get like this when I really want to focus on my writing...so I want to hear some of the books that have blown your minds hee hee.

message 11: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wmaresca) I am not sure what I am going to read I have quite a few retellings. Maybe Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer or Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard can anyone help me on this one.

message 12: by R.J. (last edited Jan 15, 2017 03:21PM) (new)

R.J. Abell | 682 comments I haven't read Splintered, but I've read the Lunar chronicles and they're pretty good :) I enjoyed all of them so much...I thought they could have worked better as individual series...you'll see more of what I mean if you start reading them. I loved all of the characters and was so invested in their stories each book is a different re-telling, introducing new characters. All of the stories become entwined and eventually work together. I really enjoyed it my only complaint, was that I would have liked it more if the separated the books into their own series.

I have a bunch of retellings. I have not read them all yet but I've got a ton of them.

Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas Fairest by Gail Carson Levine Beastly (Beastly, #1; Kendra Chronicles, #1) by Alex Flinn The Looking Glass Wars (The Looking Glass Wars, #1) by Frank Beddor

These only name a few of the retellings that I have. I have many many more.

R.J. Abell | 682 comments Name me some you have read and loved...

I'm reading the medium now and like it so far

message 15: by Christina (new)

Christina (cmb1987) The Singing Bone is about a beast that terrorizes a forest outside of a Kingdom. Also has to do with hateful brother relationships since all Grimm's stories are dark. I thought about reading Splintered, which I also have, but I'm saving it for the weekly author later this month.

That is what I was thinking also, Saving Splintered for next weeks author of the week. I think I will read Cinder for this weekly theme.

I loved Splintered. It was a good twist for the fairytale. I enjoyed Dorothy Must Die and a few other retellings.

Okay officially got back into my reading after having a field day with the fact that I have to do another parent teacher conference. I swear this woman is going to make me old faster than I need to. The second time that my child's grades have slipped and she hasn't said anything at all and it's pissed me off because I tried to give her the chance to reach out after I reached out the first time and nothing. I am appalled by the lack of communication from this woman.

Anyways I started reading the second book of splintered today.

message 21: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wmaresca) Andrea I totally understand you and what you mean about communication. It seems like sometimes if you don't question and push you are never told anything until it is to late to help them.

message 22: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wmaresca) I think I am going to read Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard wasn't sure but decided just now to read that and then I will read the second book in the series for the author challenge next week.

Hmmm what should I read for this?!?! I'm going to read Unhinged for next week. I know I have thousands of retellings all over the place lol. Maybe I'll read Quite Contrary since I'm pretty certain that it's not getting picked as BOTM. Or Jackaby? That's a retelling but it's a Sherlock Holmes retelling so idk if it counts. Decisions! Decisions!

Oooooh I just realized I have Of Metal and Wishes on audiobook and that's a retelling of Phantom of the Opera. (Not my fav tale but the book looks pretty great).

-side note- why why why doesn't the Goodreads app let you add bookcovers and links to posts?!?!? It's the dumbest thing about this app. Also the fact that you can't write in a comment box and be able to scroll around the page. If you want to go back and look at something written on a thread you have to cut/delete what you wrote and look back and then come back again and paste or write again. Mobile app fail rant over :(

I hate the mobile app, although it is good for a quick reference but that's about it.

She's not going to like me once everything is said and done with. I'll be having a field day with the parent teacher conference. I am going to request a daily note from her about his grades and if he has not finished any work she can give him the grade for it but it is to come home and he'll finish it at home and turn it back in the next day and if she chooses not to do this then I'll go to the principal about it since it isn't the first time that I've had this conversation about grades with her.

I have to agree the mobile app has failed in some aspects. And those are some of the biggest ones that I have.

Christina (cmb1987) Read The Great Hunt this week. It is based off of The Singing Bones by The Brothers Grimm. The book has a lot more love story and a lot less brother hatred than the original, definitely not as dark as the Grimm version. Overall it was still a very enjoyable read. The book was best when it was sticking close to the original story.

I was frustrated with the ending. It didn't seem complete to me even though it kind of continued in Scarlet.

Scarlet is really good and so is Cress. I thought the series only got better as it went on. Winter was my favorite. I gobbled it up.

I'm halfway through Of Metal and Wishes. I listened to almost 4 hours of it today. Once I started I couldn't stop. It's so good. I've been wanting to read it for a while but never got around to it. I'm happy I finally did. I'll jump right into Unhinged when I'm done. I'm on a roll.

I just finished Of Metal and Wishes and I loved it. The audiobook was amazing. I've had it on my TBR list forever. I shouldn't have waited so long.
