John shuddered dramatically. "Oh no, nothing but the books!"

John wasn't expecting to have fun at a camp that seemed like military school, but he was starting to like it.
"Sure! I was just looking for dead leaves and making sure the roots were covered by the soil." He quickly directed her to where he left off and showed her what to look for. "I'll be a few plants down if you need me."
"Have you ever done this before?" John liked the quiet when he was working but talking was okay if Silver was uncomfortable.
"My sisters loved it. Till I came into the house a muddy mess..." He grinned as he nipped off a dead leaf. "Oh, Maria hated it. She made me stand outside to get hosed off. Literally, she got the garden hose."
"Are you an only child?" The response was fast before he heard the phrasing of her words. "I get families are tough, don't have the best one myself, it's okay if you don't want to talk about yours."
"Yes." Silver said slowly. "The only member of my family that's alive or outside of prison." She said.
They worked in silence for a little while, until John decided to check on her progress. "You sure you haven't done this before? You're doing a great job."
"Okay, okay...Just making sure. The first time I tried helping out when I was younger, I killed a cactus. That is how terrible I was."
"I over watered it and it drowned..." John dramatized his embarrassment and leaned back into the dirt. "Do not judge me, I can not take it!" He grinned.
When his hands came up with the small layer of dirt, he smacked them together lightly and brushed it off, leaving his hands clean and unsticky.
Johnathan gasped when he found a strawberry cluster with two ripe enough to eat. "Jackpot!" He picked one carefully and offered it to Silver first.
John ate the other one in one bite, burying the stem in the dirt. He chewed slowly making an extremely satisfied face.
((Will be gone for four days with no wifi, sorry if I don't respond again)) "I've never had a fresh picked strawberry before. Everything is better off the plant."
