- What's chilling about it? There is someone hunting down victims that survived previous mass killings.

I quite often read thrillers or mysteries that can be a little unsettling, but I don't like horror or very scary thrillers.

And the Trees Crept In

What's chilling about it?
The overall atmosphere. The book is about two sisters who show up at their aunt's creepy house, which seems to be cursed. A lot of weird things happen, including the trees from the surrounding woods seeming to get closer each night.

Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...)
I'm a coward when it comes to horror, but I like psychological thrillers.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This is a post apocalyptic novel set in the US where animals are extinct, it snows gray ash, and food is nearly impossible to come by. Absolutely one of the bleakest settings I've ever read about.
- Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...) I've been a Stephen King fan for 3o+ years, but I don't actually read much other horror fiction.

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments - What are you reading for this category? In a Dark, Dark Wood
- What's chilling about it? It is set in the woods and it seems like a psychological thriller.
- Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...) I started out reading a lot of horror books when I was a teenager - specifically Dean Koontz. I also read a lot of Mary Higgins Clark and some Stephen King. I haven't read those types of books in a long time. I've read some psychological thrillers but that is mostly it. I've been thinking about reading some more Stephen King and I'd like to try his son Joe Hill.

Thegirlintheafternoon - What are you reading for this category?

I read A Pale View of Hills

- What's chilling about it?

It's vaguely off-putting throughout, and then there's a moment when ants crawl up your spine and it becomes deeply unsettling.

- Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...)

Not usually.

Jean Cole (joc724) | 324 comments What are you reading for this category? I also read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.
What's chilling about it? Ms. Jackson was a master at infusing familiar settings like small towns with creepy people and situations.
Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...) Not what I read for the most part, but always enjoy a good one!

Marie | 1064 comments What are you reading for this category?

Ice Cold by Tess Gerritsen

What's chilling about it?

Everything! The title, the setting (Wyoming in November, in a snow storm), and the content - missing people, spookiness, murder and conspiracy.

Do you usually read books that tend to be unsettling? (horror, thriller, weird...)

Some, but they're not my favourite. I loved that kind of thing as a teenager, but not so much now.

Clowns. Deathly ones.

I usually have several of them in my reading list for the year, but it's not something I read often. It was more my jam when I was a teenager.
