I honestly have no idea what to ask you - I feel like somehow I know you already because you've been so generous with your twitter replies and sending signed bookplates to my bookstore for me and all of that. And I'm sure you know how much I adore all of your books, including Landline (God, the feels). I do want you to know that I still manage to sell a copy of E&P almost every time I sell a copy of TFiOS. They just go so well together, and the parents are just thrilled that their kid wants to read anything at all, and they blow through books so quickly that they are ecstatic to build up their offspring's personal library.
Anyway, I hope things are going well for you. Is it weird that you're kinda famous now? Doing book tours and having people flip out over your achingly wonderful books? I feel like that would be weird. And awesome. Thank you for still being down-to-Earth at least enough to respond to tweets and Tumblr Asks. It means a lot to us fans, which I'm sure you know, considering you're in fandoms yourself. (I'm looking at you, Sherlock).
I think you're super inspirational, and I'm so glad that you've written what you've written, and I hope you always continue writing. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
Thank you for being awesome.
DFTBA, Ryan. (@Ryinwonderland)

I haven't read many of the other questions (some of them really need spoiler alert's) so I'm sorry if this one was already posted: self-published books can hit the shelves in a matter of months after completion, so why does it take traditional publishers so long?
PS Loved you on The Social!
An author talk show is what TV really needs!

How do you usually start writing a book? It's sooooo difficult to me to start writing something and i usually get very stressed out about where i should start my story, any tips?
xoxo from Spain
Hi Rainbow! For one, thank you for writing real characters with flaws, quirks, and actual personalities. I've read fangirl and E&P and can't wait to get my hands on your new book. Do you ever consider writing follow ups (or sequels) or do you want to keep all your novels as stand alone? (they are fabulous as is im just selfish and want to dive back into their world's).

Do you ever have inspirations for you characters? Do you base them off people you know or add yourself to them? If so which ones are your most inspired character off someone else? Xx Abby.

My question is: What is your greatest inspiration in writing all your novels?

While I know you said you'd never say what the three words were, can you explain your decision NOT to say what they were?
Thanks!

I love your YA books, especially Fangirl!
I would like to ask what inspires you to write?
Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
Also, will there be anymore of Simon Snow? :)
-Thanks! P.S I love your name!
OMG IM GONNA DIE IF I DONT ASK U THIS QUESTION (and i know this question sounds like hazel from The fault in our stars)
What happens afterward? Does Richie go to jail? What happens to Sabrina, Mouse, Ben, Masie, and Little Richie? Do Eleanor and Park meet again? Does Uncle Geoff take good care of Eleanor? Does Mr Sheridan become accepting of Park? Does Park keep on wearing eyeliner?
PLEASE ANSWER!!!!!!

"landline"? how can you manage to write books for adults and for teenangers?
receive my sincere peruvian greetings lol
Thanks so much for taking the time to read my questions :)
Heather wrote: "I really just have one question - at the end of Eleanor and Park, the 3 little words, are we the reader just supposed to assume that those 3 words are "I love you" because I keep thinking that it ..."
i love you is probably it but i thought it was "please just stop" idk

I love Eleanor and Park and I'm dying to read Fangirl. What are your inspirations to write? Music? People? Nature? Cats?
And also, what is your all time favorite book? :)
-Antonella from Argentina

I wanted to ask you this; I have heard that Eleanor & Park is becoming a movie, and I heard that you would be writing the screen play?, is it true?, and you have any idea of who could be in the the cast?

I was wondering, what was your inspiration to write all of these stories? Did you base them in real life? Or Did you use a fantasy of your own?
Thank You! <3 C:

I really love Eleanor & Park, I made a review about it http://imadreamerbutnotheonlyone.blog...
Thank you so much for this Rainbow. Thank you so so much.

I am a huge fan of Eleanor & Park and, as a teacher, I was able to recommend it to some of my students. One student was so inspired after reading the novel she painted a portrait of Eleanor as an art project! I (and another of my students) also really loved Fangirl, especially the "book within a book" concept. Would you ever consider writing any Simon Snow novels...or perhaps even a collection of Simon Snow stories?!
Thank you for creating novels that are independent of each other, and span a variety of genres. Keep 'em coming, and I'll keep reading :-)

I absolutely love your books - I had to throw that in there haha.
My question for you is: does your own marriage ever influence or make appearances in any of your stories?

Out of the books you've written, which one is your favorite and why? Did some of your personal experiences as a teen transpired in any of your story?

Oooh, my first question I ask to an author on goodreads, and only because your books rock! Eleanor and Park is so great, seriously. Love the songs you incorporated into the book, helps having being a child in the 80's with two teen sisters. ☺
Fangirl was just as good, and now you are one of my fave authors. Waiting to read Attachment, and can't wait to read Landline. With Fangirl, you touched a nerve cause I'm a twin and some twins do grow apart but still love each other. Thanks for their story.
My question is: will you have a say as to who is cast as Eleanor and Park for the movie?
It would be a travesty if their images are tarnished because of Hollywood standards. Hopefully you have a say. I am so glad you are writing the script.
Thanks and keep writing awesome books!
p.s. a graphic novel sounds really cool!

First off I just love love love your books (standard)
I just want to know where you get the inspiration from to write? What's your writing routine if you have one and what pulls you through when you have those 'can't be bothered to write' moments?
Oh and is there going to be a sequel for Fangirl? And a film version of E and P? Or have I just totally made that up or heard gossip somewhere...
Thanks a bunch,
Jen

I'm so glad you're taking the time to do this; I love it when authors do so - it makes us fans feel a little more connected and whatnot.
But I digress! Here's my question: Do you have plans for another YA novel any time soon? If so, what tentative plot may you be going for?
Additionally, I enjoyed Attachments a lot (I liked all of your novels, but probably Attachments the most, followed by Fangirl!), and I know it's not exactly classified as YA, so I was wondering if Landlines will be in that vein as well?
Thanks so much!

Your first book I read was Attachments (loved). The next was Eleanor and Park (loved). I have Fangirl on my nightstand, but I'm pretty sure I know how my relationship with that book is going to end (it includes love). Thank you for writing books that have earned a permanent spot on my bookshelf.
I know you have dealt with issues of censorship in the past, particularly concerning Eleanor and Park, which stunned a colleague and me (we both work in a public library and, as mentioned, loved E&P). My questions to you are how do you respond to such criticism professionally and personally? How do you pick yourself up and brush yourself off and continue on writing books that resonate with people? Do you find you write differently or more cautiously now than before?
Thanks for your time and the opportunity to lose myself for a few hours in your books. Best wishes for continued success.

I connected immediately with your book Fangirl and found myself laughing out loud. The part where Cath is too shy to go downstairs and find the college dining hall so she resorts to eating granola bars in her room sounds JUST like me! I also loved that you chose Nebraska as the setting and even mentioned my hometown (Scottsbluff)! Go Huskers!
My question is: How do you deal with writer's block and generate ideas for your stories? Also, any advice for a new journalist, I write for my school newspaper. Thanks so much! :)

Hopefully you'll see this question...
So, we obviously share similar tastes in music. I loved E&P partly because of the connection they made through music and mixed tapes. The bands you mentioned were great. How can I not love a book that mentions not only The Smiths and The Cure but SKINNY PUPPY!
What are your favorite bands? Current and not so current. Long time Depeche Mode devotee here.
Michelle

I admire most your ability to create such real characters. Has observing the tiny details of people come naturally to you, or is it something you developed as a writer? Is there a way to gather those details without staring creepily at strangers?
Thank you, and all the best. I can't wait to read Landline.

You probably don't remember meeting me, but you did. I love your books and I was just wondering where the inspiration for you characters comes from. Are they based off of past experiences, or pure imagination. Also, who designs your amazing covers?
Thanks,
Nina

What were the greatest challenges in your path of becoming a writer? Were there difficulties in writing or motivation or inspiration? Were there fears, doubts or publishing problems? And what were your greatest rewards?

Many of my questions might be repetitions of others' but I hope you don't find them too boring!
1) Where do you find all your inspiration for ideas and other such details in your books?
2) How do you decide what your target audience would be?
3) Did you know from the beginning what would happen at the end of your books, or when you wrote it did you feel it was right? If so, what told you that it was the right ending?
4) How do you go about writing your books? Does an idea pop into your head spontaneously and you start writing, or do you spend long periods of time brainstorming?
5) What hindrances have there been on your journey to become an author? Have you ever felt that you are fighting a losing battle?
6) How do you go about publishing your books?
7) How do you know that that what you have written is going to be received well and bought?
Thanks Rainbow, love your writing and keep it up!

I read that you have two sons, as I do. You seem to understand the male POV very well, and wondered what your own boys are like and if it has affected your literate self?

Continue writing good stories :) Can't wait for the Landline! Godspeed!

The characters you created in Fangirl are very realistic and relatable, and I was wondering, who inspired you the most during your journey as a famous author? What gave you the ideas to these beautiful novels? Can you give us as readers of well written novels an advice to improve our writing style? Did you study English literature during your university years?
Thank you very much!

I have to say, I'm absolutely in love with your name and your writing and am seriously considering naming my first child after you, and asking you to be honorary god-mother! :D
I do have a few questions to ask you, and I hope you won't mind answering at least one? Pretty please? :)
Well, for starters, have you ever written fanfiction yourself? Do you consider yourself in any fandoms? What made you want to write Fangirl in the first place? Why are you so good at portraying how people think and feel-- especially fangirls and teenagers like me, who relate so much to your characters? Do you have any advice to us aspiring authors as to how to create our own amazing characters and tales?
Alright, I shall end my barrage of questions here. I really cannot wait for Landline, and I'm sure I'll love it just as much as I love your other books! <3

What can you tell us about your collaboration with Faith Erin Hicks? You are one of my favorite authors and she's my favorite graphic artist so needless to say I'm super excited!!!
Thank you for your time! I can't wait to read Landlines!

As somebody who was working at a newspaper with a bunch of cute boys in 1999, I have to thank you for Attachments, which I read in two giant gulps like a deeply personal cake.
How has your newspaper experience affected your fiction writing, besides that setting?
Thanks!
