Do you have any advice for budding writers?

message 507: by Karah (new)

Karah (karahrpaige) Rainbow, you mentioned in an earlier post, maybe even two, that previous characters show up sneakily in Landline. Now I feel like I need to reread the entire book to figure out who they are. Can you at least say which chapter they appear in? Also, I adore all of your books, especially Landline. It hit me in the feels.

Maria | 5 comments So far I have read Fangirl, Attachments, and Eleanor & Park and they were all AMAZING (my ultimate favourite was Fangirl)!!!!

Does Cath finish Carry On, Simon? And is there a possiblilty of a Fangirl sequel?

Thank you so much for these fantastic books!!

message 513: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (katatonic28) | 2 comments I'm looking forward to reading your latest, but have a question and comment about the character of Park: was there a specific reason why he was created as a Korean-American? I live in Nebraska and, as you are aware, the Asian population in our area is small. However, my son was adopted from South Korea and I'm looking forward to sharing "Eleanor & Park" with him. THANK YOU for creating a wonderful male character, whom many readers have fallen in love with. It's so refreshing to read a story with a non-stereotypical portrayal of an Asian young man.

Grace (LovingDemBooks) Z. (grayczhuang) As you experience more in life, does anything make you want to change the plot or ending of your previous books? If so, which novels, and why?

message 515: by Mari B. (new)

Mari B. Pereira (ladymaricota) | 1 comments hi Rainbow!

First of all i need to thank you for being so humble, talented and honest as a writer but mostly as a person.
Each one of your books has a unique tone and above all they speak trough and for our generation.

Your books here in Brazil are starting to get the recognition that they deserve specially Eleanor & Park (so far the 1st one of your books) so like to ask you what come to your mind when you realize that your stories are crossing borders and reaching more and more readers everyday?
Specially now with your newest novel Landline (wich btw cant wait to put a hand on my copy)

All the love and one more time Thank You!!!

message 516: by Maria (new)

Maria | 5 comments Fangirl was without a doubt one of those books that left me stuck in the world of Cath and her friends and family long after I finished it (finishing it left me in one of those book mourning periods where you miss the story and the characters now that you're finished the book). I loved Levi's charm and friendliness, Reagan's wit, and how relatable Cath was! My favourite quote was "In new situations, all the trickiest rules are the ones nobody bothers to explain to you. (And the ones you can't google.)" I found that part unbelievably true and I'm sure many people have felt that way before. I was wondering, on page 236 of my copy, Cath and Wren are talking about how all the actors in Simon Snow and the Selkies Four have really long hair. This reminds me of how everyone in the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie have really long hair. Was this an intentional Harry Potter reference?

message 517: by Zsofia (new)

Zsofia Fodor | 1 comments Hi Rainbow,
I adore your stories, the plots, the characters, your writing styles, the pop-cultural references, you name it. Now, I'm on the mission of getting my friends to read all of them (it's my noble quest to get them to read all the great books!) but since I only have the e-books formats, I was wondering if a box set of your work exists. I'm also hoping that signed copies could be purchased somewhere because it'd be really awesome to have such hard copies! I'm also curious about how much your personal life affects your stories or the characters. I'd like to know how you met Kai, too but if I'm being too nosey, you can skip it, of course.

Thank you!

Angela | 2 comments Hi Rainbow, you write amazing characters and I was curious, have you ever considered writing the story of Parks parents?

message 519: by Lilia (new)

Lilia (liliasbooks) Hey Rainbow (that name! I love it! <3) I have a few questions...

I wanna become an author, are there any tips you could give me?

Are you interested in coming to Germany? I'd love to meet you :D

When you write, do you have like a film in your head or do you just write the things down without seeing them?

Have you ever written a character that was completely inspired by yourself?

All the best
Lily

message 520: by Julie (new)

Julie smith (ilovepeetamandseamus) | 1 comments The first book I read by you was fangirl and after I read it I got addicted to your books and soon read them all. Eleanor and Park is my favorite and I cant wait for the movie.
Q. Out of all your books which was your favorite to write?

message 521: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (booklover_04) Hi Ms. Rowell!

I have just recently read one of your books-Eleanor and Park. I'm planning to read some of your other books such as Fangirl. What is your inspiration for your books? I love to write also but I always have writer's block. But once I get an idea, there's no stopping me! I find Eleanor particularly intriguing. Most characters I've come across are not overweight and they definitely don't have the same unique sense of style :P How did you come up with her character?

Thank you so much!

message 522: by Cristina (new)

Cristina (cristinags) | 2 comments Hi, Ms. Rainbow Rowell.
I'm sure this are questions that people usually asks you, anyway: 1- Where do you have the inspirations for your stories? 2- Why do you write them?? Specially Eleanor & Park. 3- What do you do before you are going to write?
A weird fact: Before I read "Eleanor & Park, I haved a dream where a boy apears exactly like Park. He was Park, I promise!!! I dreamed it last Agust and I haved read E&P this Jannuary!!! IT IS SOO WEIRD, BUT IT'S TRUE!!!
Thanks for read my meseage and maybe ask my questions. And sorry for the fact, but I have to tell you, it's so important and special for me that you know it. :)
Bye,
Cristina G.S.

message 523: by Maia (new)

Maia | 1 comments Hi Rainbow!

Let me start off by saying I LOVED Eleanor & Park. Even though I have a deep hatred for Richie, like many others probably do, it is one of my favorite books ever. I am currently reading Fangirl, which I also think is great so far!

My questions are, what inspired you to write these books? And, how do you relate to your characters? Are any parts of the stories/characters based on your experiences?

If you reply to this, that would be awesome, but I understand if you are busy. Keep writing more awesome books!

I can't write anymore in longhand. I write and edit in Scrivener. Sometimes I make giant outlines, by hand, and hang them on my wall.

Yes, it's very much like watching a film in my head. With music and everything. I even think of the scene changes.

Patricia wrote: "Hi Rainbow,

For me those three words at the end of E&P are "I miss you", do you get frustrated that everyone keeps asking you what they are? (btw I like how you left it, it means the reader can make it what they want).

Q2 When can we expect your next novel?

Thank you <3 "

1. That is a very good guess.

2. It doesn't frustrate me, exactly, but it's not a question I'll ever answer. And I think people would be disappointed if I did. What's important to me about that scene is that Eleanor reached out, even though she was afraid. And that Park was happy to hear from her. It made him feel hopeful.

3. My next book will probably be out fall 2015. But I participated in an anthology of holiday-themed short stories called My True Love Gave to Me.
That will be out this fall.

Thank you!

message 535: by Desa (new)

Desa (desatayting) | 2 comments Hi Rainbow! I hope this little message would catch your attention. I have read Eleanor and Park and it was the best! I'm planning to read more of your books. Can I ask you a favor? A friend recommended me your books that's why I was able to read Eleanor and Park (which made me cry) and she just celebrated her birthday last Monday. Can you greet her, please? Thank you! And by the way, I liked Eleanor and Park although I hated why they didn't made it to happily ever after. I guess that's reality.

ella (roza1123) | 2 comments i'm brazilian but when fangirl came out i read it in english because it had no realease date here, and i absolutely love it. now that the book has a realease date i wonder if you are excited to see how brazilian fans and new readers will like this new (and my favorite) book ?

message 541: by Luiza (new)

Luiza | 1 comments Oh my gosh Raibow, you're so amazing! Really, Elanor and Park is one of my all-time favorites, and I finished it last week. I was actually on the bus when I finished it and I started crying, A LOT, and people were looking at me and wondering but I didn't care because Eleanor and Park was obviously more important than real life in that moment.

And all I can say is that I'll always think that the three words were "I love you", mostly because Eleanor haven't said that to Park in the whole book. I was pretty sure it was that until I read you saying that you didn't want to disappoint the fans by telling what it was and OH MY GOD, I guess that I'd rather to keep with the I love you idea than some other sad thing because honestly, I've cried my heart out and I guess I can't even cry anymore! You're awesome, I'm so excited about Fangirl!

message 542: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (itsrachel) | 1 comments Hi! I've read many of your books but my favorite one is Eleanor & Park. I was wondering if some of the events depicted in this book were based on real life experience. Have you ever written a book inspired by real life events? Which one of your characters can you realate with the most? Thank you thank you thank you for your time :)

I'm a huge fan of your work and yourself!! I loved your books, especially Fangirl since it was the first and my favourite. I love it so much and as i was reading one of your books, i would always wonder where you get your ideas.

So i guess my question is where did you get your ideas for each of your books? And do you have any advice for people who want to write a book someday, since i'm trying to write a book myself?

I hope you'll get to answer my questions (even though you'll probably never read this) and stay awesome my favourite author! ❤️

I was wondering how or where you got your inspirations to write your amazing novels?
