carol. | 551 comments Ditto! I'll look forward to your popping. There's also a news/links folder for when people hear of any upcoming Ben/Peter news. Feel free to add info!

Margaret (margyw) | 317 comments Will do. :)

I won't be around much for a couple of weeks. I'm heading to London for two weeks holiday.

Oddly enough, I am staying, quite literally, just around the corner from where Ben sites the Folly. I'll be walking past it every day.

Welcome, Margaret! Glad you could join all us Folly Irregulars.

And oh my goodness! You'll be near the Folly location! Can you post a picture, if possible, of the actual location, please, if you've got the time?

message 54: by carol. (new)

carol. | 551 comments I'm a bit envious, Margaret! I rather like the idea of a tour through Peter Grant's London.

message 55: by Lata (new)

Lata | 371 comments I remember when I and my partner were in London many years ago, we bought a book listing a variety of walking tours of the city, with historical details described for each location. We had a blast wandering around the city on these self-guided tours.

When you know the places, it makes each reading a bit more special because you can see the places in your mind's eye.

John Doe | 37 comments hello from the antipodes!

was helpfully directed by Carol to the virtual Folly. I look forward to debating the likelihood of a Muslim Ninja being found chowing down on a kebab at midnight

Lyn (lyn37167) | 20 comments I'm all in on this series, binge read them all to The Hanging Tree and I'll make short work of that and then on to the graphic novels.

message 73: by carol. (new)

carol. | 551 comments Welcome, Lyn. It's so fun to find another fan. I have to ask--have you done the audios yet?

message 78: by Snicketts (new)

Snicketts | 11 comments Hi! I'm Snicketts and I'm from Sussex in the UK. I don't know why I have never typed the words "Peter Grant" into the Group Search bar before - I've been a fan of his for years now! I've read all the full length novels, but none of the novellas as yet. Foxglove Summer is my favourite book in the series and I've read them all at least twice.

I'm a mum, an archaeology fan and I read more than is probably socially acceptable! Rivers of London is the book/series I find myself recommending whenever people ask me what I like to read and I explain it as a Harry Potter meets The Bill mash-up!

Anyway, Hi! Glad I've found you all. :)

message 79: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 317 comments Hi Snicketts. Welcome.

There is no such things as a socially acceptable level of reading. All reading is socially acceptable. :D

message 80: by Lata (new)

Lata | 371 comments Welcome Snicketts! And I second Margaret, all reading, no matter how much you do of it, is socially acceptable 😀

message 81: by Caro (new)

Caro the Helmet Lady (caro_helmet_lady) | 46 comments Hi, Snicketts and welcome!

message 82: by carol. (new)

carol. | 551 comments Welcome, Snicketts. I am curious: what is this 'The Bill" that you mention? Is this another book series I should check out? :)

message 83: by Ronnie (new)

Ronnie | 8 comments "The Bill" was a UK television drama series that ran on the ITV network between 1994 and 2010, about the police officers in the fictional Sun Hill police station in London.

message 84: by carol. (new)

carol. | 551 comments Thanks, Ronnie! That's a looooong run for a tv show, but sounds like it might be much better than anything lately in the U.S.

message 85: by Lata (new)

Lata | 371 comments I see what you mean about a long run for a tv show!

Of course, my apologies! :)

That's not what everyone says! Especially not when it's my turn to make dinner and I have 'forgotten' in favour of reading just one more chapter!

Hi! Thank you. :)

message 89: by Lata (new)

Lata | 371 comments That’s been me, too, Snicketts :) I’m usually running late completing chores since I’m always trying to squeeze one more chapter in.... 🙂

Snicketts | 11 comments Carol. wrote: "Thanks, Ronnie! That's a looooong run for a tv show, but sounds like it might be much better than anything lately in the U.S."

Sorry Carol and Ronnie - I did think that it might not translate, but The Bill was so very British, rather like Peter and Nightingale. There's tea and rain and quirky characters and being polite - I think I saw one episode! CSI Miami - it isn't ! (No, I don't watch a lot of TV - that's the first US Police type drama that came to mind)!

Anyway apologies, I didn't mean to confuse anyone and I'd be interested in how you guys describe the wonder that is RoL to the uninitiated! My descriptions rarely do it justice.

I claim it's not my fault - there are too many good books out there and I won't want to miss any of them! ;)

No apologies needed! I was crossing my fingers that it might be another book series :D

message 93: by Ronnie (new)

Ronnie | 8 comments It was a fantastic series, very true to life, very much a documentary feel to it.
It's fun to watch the earlier years, and seeing actor and actresses (who are now very well known) in their early professional acting jobs.

I'd say the nearest US equivalent is "Hill Street Blues".

message 94: by carol. (new)

carol. | 551 comments Oh, that sounds fun.

*mentally adds it to my 'watch when bedridden list'

message 95: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 317 comments The early years of The Bill were excellent. It went a bit soapy later on.

First two season are still my favourites. It had some really good lines.

Prisoner in the cells: I want Galloway! (Meaning DI Roy Galloway)
PC 'Taffy' Edwards: Boiled or fried?

I think I saw one episode - I never was a big police drama fan. I like my coppers to have a Ford Asbo and a girlfriend who's a river goddess! ;)

message 97: by Cathy (last edited May 08, 2018 11:27PM) (new)

Cathy (cathepsut) Hi all, Carol graciously invited me after reading my review of Foxglove Summer and here I am. I‘m German, lived abroad for 14 years, back in Germany for 10 years now. I have been reading Fantasy and SF since I was a teenager, spent a lot of time reading tons of UF and tired of it eventually. Have been reading a lot of SF in the past two years.
The first Peter Grant was not a success for me, I loved the beginning, but then almost DNFd it in the second part of the book. I picked up the second book as a group read with another group recently and just finished Foxglove Summer. I loved all the books and plan to re-read the first one soonish.
I lived in London for four years, so I absolutely love the setting, the wording, the Britishness and Aaronovitch‘s humour.
The Hanging Tree is planned for June...
