This one
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler
Kristie wrote: "Any suggestions for books translated into English from Italian?"The Name of the Rose is an excellent book.I loved it!
.but be warned, you have to google a lot..
Lanelle wrote: "Kristie wrote: "Any suggestions for books translated into English from Italian?"Pinocchio, of course. (I imagine it's completely different from Disney's movie!)"
Did not know Pinocchio was italian..
Kristie, MY BRILLIANT FRIEND is the first book in a series of four, set in Naples in the 50's, and translated from Italian. I read the first two and rated them both 5 stars. I plan to use the other two for "Italy" and " Italian".
siriusedward wrote: "Did not know Pinocchio was italian.."Yep. And since it was written in 1883, it will also work for those who put down 'Classic" as an answer.
For 31. If you could meet anyone famous, infamous, notorious, who would it be? Vin Diesel! He doesn't really have a bio. The ones that is out there are between 25-75 pages.. Can I read a book with the MC is an actor??
Has anyone have an opinion of either Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds or Ceres2525 by Michael Lee Nelson?
Sandra wrote: "Kristie, MY BRILLIANT FRIEND is the first book in a series of four, set in Naples in the 50's, and translated from Italian. I read the first two and rated them both 5 stars. Dom, another solution would be to look at the movies he's done and if any were an adaption, read that book. You just have to be able to explain how the book you choose relates to that person. I'm going to reword that task to allow for interpretation because quite a few people are struggling with it.
Hi Joan,I looked up both of your books. For the first, I see that Esther (in the group) and a couple of other people that I follow reviews for have read it. They are die hard science fiction fans and gave it more than 3 star reviews. That is good, but it might not be good for you. It depends on how much and what kind of sci-fi you read. You might give it a go if you are considering to do the whole challenge but leave it until last to see if we can come up with something else. Esther might chime in yet.
The other is so new that I only saw one review, although it was 5 stars. The title certainly has your time date. I'm wondering if you could get a copy though.
2nd note to Joan - It bothered me that I didn't have the Reynolds book on my list because I did recognize the name. I just checked. Yes, I have one of his other books on my TBR list and I remember reading his author's note about the books in a specific order. Haha, he even had a title with turquoise (my birthstone) in it. If I didn't already have a book planned, and already own it, I would be tempted... Why didn't I say "the future" either!!!
Cherie, thanks. I read very little science fiction - the revelation space book caught my eye because it is described as a space opera ( I love the pathos & drama of operas) and author is a scientist so I might learn something as I read. The Ceres2525 was suggested by my sister-in-law, she called it Christian-sci-fi, which sounds ummm intriguing.

Please remember to links your books so that it's easy for people to look them up.Revelation Space
Ceres 2525

Yes, I have one of his other books on my TBR list and I remember ..."Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days - I rejected that one for myself because it's 2 books in one and Turquoise Days is only 78 pages long. You could get around it by saying that both stories total 200+ pages, but I decided there were other books out there that fit the task better. I'm not saying that it's not eligible for the task, just not for me.
I'm just commenting on the book even though I see you've chosen something else for Turquoise.
Joan wrote: "Oops I didn't knowI could link to books in the app, sorry."If you're on the app, you could update when you get to a computer. I notice lots of people mention that they are on the app and state that they will update the links later.
It just seemed like there were several links missing over the last few days, and not just by you, that I thought I would mention it.
Another suggestion is that someone could add the links for you, like I did.

Just to warn you that for me, it took a little to get going in the book, I was really lukewarm with it until about the middle and then it really hooked me in. My favorite was the second book.

I did not realize that it was two books in one, but thanks!
I might read it, if I was not so focused on getting others, that I already own, to apply to as many questions as I can. ;o)
Peggy wrote: "For car, I found The Last Dragonslayer and Tears of the Giraffe"Both good stories, IMO! I really want the 4th book in The Chronicles of Kazam series to be available.
Joan wrote: "she called it Christian-sci-fi, which sounds ummm intriguing..."LOL. If you read it, I will be dying to hear about the story.
Unknowingly, I picked up several Christian mystery series books at a book sale. I am not knocking them. There are times, I really appreciate not having wade through all of the four letter words that are in many contemporary books today. I am not a prude. I am open to just about anything, but the repetition gets to me.
I just realized that, the book I finished last night didn't have any swearing. It is not why I enjoyed it, but it is true.
Sandra wrote: "Yes, Cherie. That's the book. Thanks for linking. Lately I am using more the app"I just happened to be curious and look it up today.
Hasanyone read any of David Attenborough's books. I've seen many of his shows but not read any of his books. There are quite a few. Any recs? Otherwise i guess I'll go with whatever i can find at the library if i choose that task.
Cherie, thanks for the heads up about Thor Heyerdahl's book about Easter Island : )Love, love, love books like this.
Sarah wrote: "Hasanyone read any of David Attenborough's books. I've seen many of his shows but not read any of his books. There are quite a few. Any recs? To be honest, I reckon most of his books that are based on his shows would be worth a read.
Thanks Lisa. Yes I liked the Planet Earth series so perhaps that would be a good one to go with. I've not watched the latest one yet so perhaps I would wait for that one.
Joan wrote: "Has anyone have an opinion of either Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds or Ceres2525 by Michael Lee Nelson?"Sorry, I know I'm a few days late with this. I haven't read either but I am a SF fan and a lot of my friends on here are too.
Revelation Space is a hard core science based SF book that tends to drag on a bit according to the reviews of my friends that have read it, so beware, it might be a bit of a slog to get through.
Ceres 2525 looks like a cheesy SF. Like A Princess of Mars type cheesy. I happen to love these kind of books but beware again, this would be like pulp fiction 50's style, fun and not serious as all.
Dawn - I think that was what I was trying to convey to Joan about Revelation Space. I do not consider myself a hard core SF reader, but I do enjoy a good SF story. It used to be all I read, for many years.I think Ceres 2525 might be fun, but no way to tell until we try it. I am willing.
Oh, my heart! A Princess of Mars is cheesy? Say it isn't so!
Can anyone help me think of a book that would fit with the theme of Revenge of the Nerds! My favorite movie!!! lol.

How about a book set at a college, one with students who are in fraternities. Or Geek Love (or something similar with Geek in the title - there are many options) as its synonymous with nerd. Or a cyberpunk book because of the computer science link. Or American football due to the jocks.
Sarah, great ideas... I was stuck on the idea of the nerd getting the girl. You've given me a lot of directions to go!
Liz wrote: "Sarah, great ideas... I was stuck on the idea of the nerd getting the girl. You've given me a lot of directions to go!"First one I thought of was The Geek Feminist Revolution.
Cherie wrote: "Dawn - I think that was what I was trying to convey to Joan about Revelation Space. I do not consider myself a hard core SF reader, but I do enjoy a good SF story. It used to be all I ..."I thought I'd throw in another comment on it as it looked like I had a few more friends who had read it than you had. It does look very much like a hard science style book and I don't usually recommend those except to die hard SF readers.
I want someone to read Ceres 2525 and tell me if it's cheesy good fun or just cheesy bad! :)
Liz wrote: "Can anyone help me think of a book that would fit with the theme of Revenge of the Nerds! My favorite movie!!! lol."
What about Ready Player One? It's pretty geeky in general, being all about gaming and I'm pretty sure there is a love interest for the geek hero.
I've read Ready Player One and Geek Love. Both great reads! I'm going to go for a geeky heroine/hero book, or a book set in college. Those should be close enough links.
Dawn wrote: "Cherie wrote: "Dawn - I think that was what I was trying to convey to Joan about Revelation Space. I do not consider myself a hard core SF reader, but I do enjoy a good SF story. It us..."Alrighty then I'll take one for the team and read Ceres 2525
Note that I don't know much about Sci-Fi - I always get "StarTrack" and "Lost in Space" confused but I liked the "Jetsons".
