A Prayer for Owen Meany is a reflecting on memories book. AND Christmas is mentioned many times. Christmas Family reunions, Christmas and Viet Nam, etc.

The Wind in the Willows is set in December. There is a chapter in which some of the characters spend Christmas together and sing carols.

The Woman in Black starts with the family tradition of telling ghost stories every Christmas Eve...thus the tale of the woman in black is unfolds.

You might check out Turkey Day Murder in the Lucy Stone Mystery Series. I've read them in order but they're probably alright as a stand alone. She's pretty much covered every holiday in that series so if anyone else is looking for a different holiday you might find something in this series.

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Casceil wrote: "Sarah, I don't know about the ones you have listed, but I recently read a very off-beat Christmas book, The Inn at the Edge of the World."

This book sounds promising (that is, not terribly fluffy), Casceil, and my local library even has a copy of it.

I was regretting using Easter too until I found a book by Thor Heyerdahl Easter Island

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just need to shuffle my shoe size book list through the fruit machine and I can start posting my book finds. Yay!

Tiger Lily - this was for Peggy for her "tiger" list, but it would work for the flower too, or if you need a red book cover for your birthstone. It is Fantasy/YA.

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Almeta and Lori. Adding those to my Thanksgiving options. :)

message 59: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments I found The Mysterious Affair at Styles on a list of "Best Books with a Medical Setting." Does anyone know if this is really a hospital type setting?

message 60: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments Any suggestions for German books translated to English?

message 61: by Peggy (last edited Dec 01, 2016 05:05AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments In the Land of the Long White Cloud
The Hangman's Daughter

These are two that come immediately to mind. I think I've read more, or have more on my tbr, I can search later.

message 62: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I don't think so, Kristie. I can't think why it would be in a Medical list. I didn't care that much for the story and did't like Poirot's friend Hastings all that much. I can't recall if they went to a hospital or not. It wasn't set in a hospital, I don't think. It was a while ago though.

Tasha Kristie wrote: "I found The Mysterious Affair at Styles on a list of "Best Books with a Medical Setting." Does anyone know if this is really a hospital type setting?"

I don't recall there being a hospital in the story.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Lori Z wrote: "Any suggestions for German books translated to English?"

Lori, I have a few that spring to mind:

All Quiet on the Western Front
Ruby Red
The Reader

message 65: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Thanks Cherie & Tasha. The blurb didn't sound like it was in a medical setting. It must be on the list in error. Fortunately, there are plenty that will fit that slot.

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Kristie wrote: "Thanks Cherie & Tasha. The blurb didn't sound like it was in a medical setting. It must be on the list in error. Fortunately, there are plenty that will fit that slot."

Unfortunately, those lists can be a bit misleading and contain lots of errors.

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's why I've been asking people's advice on books I've found on the lists.

message 68: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Exactly. That's why I asked too.

Marcus | 865 comments I need help with "truck", "November", "shower", "bare feet", "left"...thanks all!

message 70: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Several suggestions for shower were given a bit earlier in this thread.

I think there's a listopia for feet on the cover, and it also has covers with bare feet.

Marcus wrote: "I need help with "truck", "November", "shower", "bare feet", "left"...thanks all!"

For November: Five Days in November or November 9. Both are long enough but the subjects may not be appealing.

Also books that are set during Autumn may be appropriate? This is from Listopia, but may be inaccurate. https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

Kristie | 19148 comments Here's a list of books that have dresses and bare feet on the cover: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

I actually have a few from the list on my TBR already. Here are my current bare feet books on my possibilities list: The Flight of Gemma Hardy, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, The Madman’s Daughter, Just Breathe, The Shadow Year, Starcrossed

message 73: by Joan (new)

Joan Hey, science fiction fans: I need a book that is set in the year 2525. Why didn't I just say I'd like to travel into the future :(

message 74: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments For anyone looking for a book with "smell" in the title, The Smell of Other People's Houses was pretty good.

message 75: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments For anyone looking for a book where the main character has no sense of smell, try Flying Dutch by Tom Holt. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read.

Kristie | 19148 comments Has anyone read The Darwin Elevator? I'm wondering if it can be used for space or if it would be Australia. Where does the majority of the book take pace?

message 77: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Joan, it seems A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ IS SET IN THE 26th century.

message 78: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I can't link now (in the app), but if you search for "26th century" in Wikipedia, there are some options under thhe "Literature" subtitle.

message 79: by Joan (new)

Joan Thank you Sandra, I never thought of searching like that, I'm just barely adapted to the 21st century :)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments :D

message 81: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kristie- The Darwin Elevator has a good section set in space. The "space" is just outside the earth's atmosphere not another planet or outer space, if you know what I mean. Not in a space ship, but in space habitats.

I read/listened all three books in the trilogy. I really liked it. I know Sarah started it but I'm not sure she finished it though.

message 82: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Joan- I cannot think of one, off hand but I will look. I don't think the Star Trek books go that far.

I know what you mean about the time thing though. I said 1850s.

I own two that are set in 1890s. I can find books published in the 1850s though. You are out of luck there. ^_^

HG Wells' The Time Machine went way into the future, but I don't remember a date.

message 83: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments Thanks for the suggestions everyone for the German books. I'm going to go with Lisa's suggestion of Ruby Red since its on my tbr pile.

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I can highly recommend the Expanse series starting with Leviathan Wakes for set in space. And the Enders series starting with Ender's Game. That one also has aliens in.

Tricky year Joan. I hope you find something.

message 85: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Thanks, Cherie. That's pretty much what I thought. I read part of it a couple of years ago, but never finished. I think I just wasn't in the mood. I'll add it to my list of space books.

message 86: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Yes expanse is great if the time period works

Casceil | 2728 comments Trouble in Mudbug is a very funny book. The author is Jan Deleon, who wrote Louisiana Longshot.

Maybe you'll find something from this list... https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

The very first one, The Name of the Rose says that the original title was "Il nome della rosa" so obviously it was translated from Italian.

Sure thing. Umberto Eco was italian

Pinocchio, of course. (I imagine it's completely different from Disney's movie!)

message 96: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments For those of you who selected "car" over "truck", I just finished The Lincoln Lawyer which has a car on the cover. It also has the added eye candy of Matthew McConaughey adorning the Lincoln, too.

message 97: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Italo Calvino has a par of wonderful books too...Italo Calvino

message 98: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Thanks for all the suggestions!

Janice - Thanks for the link. I don't have a single book from it on my TBR. I think I'll have to add something. The Name of the Rose looks interesting. I don't know how I missed it when 75 of my friends have added it! My GR friends that have read it have rated it all over the place from 1-5 stars, so now I'm a bit curious.

Lanelle - I never would have thought of Pinocchio! That's a really good option. I'm adding it to my possibilities.

Mariab - Thank you for the Italo Calvino suggestion. I will look into his work too. Have you read anything specific by him that you would recommend?
