Annerlee | 2871 comments Wow. Lot's of suggestion, thanks guys.

The task says:
"What is the feature you are most often complimented on? – Read a book with that feature on the cover or in the title."

I hadn't thought a cover could represent patience, so I'll have a think about that. I don't think I can get away with an author's name though...?

A card game is another interesting take on this.

message 602: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh sorry Annerlee, I didn't check what the task said exactly.

Is there a symbol for patience? Like a white dove for peace? If there is, you could also look for a cover with that symbol.

message 603: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments If your character was called Patience and sge appeared on the frint cover, would that work?

message 604: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments I looked up symbols for patience... Quora suggests an hourglass or a seed. Your idea might work too Sarah.
I think I'm going to have to look around and run it by our referee... I'll stick my neck out and see what happens (lol)

message 605: by Annerlee (last edited Jun 26, 2017 03:08PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Ahh! apparently asters and oxeye daisies are flowers that symbolise patience. Amazing what you learn in this group!

Some possibilities... maybe? Luckily, I have the patience ; /

message 606: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments There are lots of titles with the word Patience in them:

Symbols for patience are also, the turtle, the ox (animals) and the number 8 (in the Kabbalah)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Mariab wrote: "Symbols for patience are also, the turtle, the ox (animals) and the number 8 (in the Kabbalah)"

Ohh. Thanks for that Mariab. I'm feeling a lot more hopeful about this category.

message 609: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The third Gentlemen Bastard series book has a character named Patience in it. I am reading it now.

message 610: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Annerlee, I think you could read a book with something shown on the cover that requires patience. What things do tax your patience?

Like for me, handiwork such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, requires great patience. While for others, it doesn't. Working jigsaw puzzles for my dad was an unbearable trial to his patience. While for me, they were fun.

message 611: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments what tries my patience? hmm.... mindless stupidity comes to mind and 'finickity pinickity' delicate finger work

message 612: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments I found a book with a truck on the cover... well my neighbour did (she has a weird and wonderful collection of books I would never read otherwise). I've started a bookshelf in her honour (Jan recommends)

Round Ireland With A Fridge by Tony Hawks

Kristie | 19148 comments I have been unsuccessful so far in finding a copy of Psycho with the shower scene on the cover. I'm not sure what I'll read for that task if I can't find a copy. So far, I have come up with Shower of Stars, Murder Can Rain on Your Shower, or April Showers. I'm not thrilled with those options, but I'm leaning towards Shower of Stars, since it has high ratings and is the only one available at my library. Has anyone come up with anything better or read something they loved for that will fit this task?

message 614: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments I don't know if it's better, but I have selected Waterfall. It's not a traditional shower, but it is a downpour of water. I may swap it out yet, but the attraction is that I own it.

Sort of... I think the cover for Chain Reaction Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry, #3) by Simone Elkeles could fit it.

message 616: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Mariab, thanks for that suggestion. I'd say it fits! Several of my GR friends have read that one and most enjoyed it. I'll add it to my list.

Janice, I hadn't considered a waterfall as a type of shower. That will open up my search a bit more. I did think of rain showers and reading Chasing Rainbows, but I didn't know if that was stretching it too much. I also looked for baby showers and bridal showers.

message 617: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments You don't need to be too literal in your choices. Just because your answer was a method of getting clean, doesn't mean that the book has to reflect that. Baby showers, bridal showers, rain showers... they all work. As long as you can explain the connection, you're good.

message 618: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Excellent! Thanks, Janice.

message 619: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I hadn't thought of waterfalls either, thanks for that little suggestion!

Anyone have any recommendations for books taking place in the 1960's? I should've picked the 1920's, which I almost did, because I have lots of books in that decade I want to read, but not too many in the 60's.

message 620: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm sure I could find many set in the 60s. Off the top of my head:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (I think)
Whistling Past the Graveyard
The Help

I also picked 60s and plan to read either The Road to Woodstock or I Heart Ed Small

message 621: by Cherie (last edited Aug 08, 2017 04:00PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments for "shower" book - If I can find a copy, I am going to read Never Shower in a Thunderstorm.

I do like the cover of Mariab's book, but not especially the story line.

message 622: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kimey - I think you really may like The Help. It is set in 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi. There is a movie and the audio book was supposed to be great. (I read it when it first came out.)

message 623: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11263 comments I loved The Help. I think you would like it, Kimey. I am with Cherie. :)

message 624: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments I have a couple of books earmarked for the 1960's -

The Girls
Half in Love with Death

message 625: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments The Help is a really good book. I read it a couple of years ago.

Turns out I have several of these book suggestions on my TBR list! And just added a couple more. Apparently I didn't gopher for that topic as much as I thought I had. LOL.

message 626: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments I just realized that I own Whistling Past the Graveyard on audiobook. I'll go with that one for the task.

message 627: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11630 comments Janice, does Spell or High Water work for the showers question? The water from my shower is way over my head ;-p

message 628: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments It might be a bit of a stretch (hehehe), but if you can justify it, you can use it.

message 629: by Annerlee (last edited Aug 10, 2017 06:33AM) (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Re shower: How about a rain shower?
Mr. Mercedes (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #1) by Stephen King

That would be so great .. ! I've considered it longingly a couple of times and discounted it. But it seems the category is wider than I thought...

My Psycho cover would be the edition from the local library.
Psycho by Robert Bloch

Annerlee | 2871 comments Janice wrote: "I have a couple of books earmarked for the 1960's - "

60s? Which question was that? Is it classical vs contemporary?

message 631: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think it's the question about which time period you would travel to.

message 632: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments What Peggy said.

message 633: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Annerlee - I mentioned a rain shower to Janice and she said it was fine as long as you can make the connection to shower. The book I'm thinking of has a girl walking with an umbrella on the cover.

If you are using a cover picture, I believe it has to be the cover of the edition you read. That's why I'm struggling with psycho. I haven't found any covers locally that depict the shower yet.

message 634: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments Your cover didn't show up right away on the app, Annerlee, but I would think that it shows the shower scene, so you'd be fine with that too.

message 635: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments The wording in the challenge is "depicted" on the cover. That gives you some leeway in finding a cover that represents a shower in one way or another. It doesn't have to literally be a shower.

message 636: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments Kristie wrote: "Your cover didn't show up right away on the app, Annerlee, but I would think that it shows the shower scene, so you'd be fine with that too."

The cover shows the shower scene, obvious if you've seen the film but not so obvious if you haven't. The screaming lady has water dripping from her mouth and there's a shadow with a knife through the curtain.

Right. I couldn't see it on the app, but it shows up now. It definitely depicts the shower scene.

Oh Annerlee, I read Mr. Mercedes (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #1) by Stephen King this year and I never thought of that! Now I'll go back and see if I used it for a different question. Though I think I might read Psycho by Robert Bloch anyway.

Yeah, I loved the movie! But it is a very long time since I saw it, maybe a read is in order ;-)

I think we talked about this time in a few posts, Pragya. I cannot recall, exactly. I will look and see if I can find something, but you might need to read back through the previous posts.

You could just chose a book on near future time travel i.e. 21st centuary

"Read a book that is about that holiday, set during that holiday, or has the name in the title."
Could you find something to do with lights? Or victory of good over evil/light over darkness? Focus on the meaning of the holiday maybe than the literal set during Diwali?

message 650: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Here's a short list of books set in the near future: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

I don't think it needs to be specifically 2030. A range of about 10 years should work.
