PNR Traumatized heroines:needs more books

There's Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs and Desperately seeking Shapeshifter by Jessica Sims. Both have really traumatized heroines that must overcome their fears and meet their really possessive mates. Then theirs Written In Red by Annie Bishop and in her story she takes longer than most heroines to overcome fears which is understandable when you read her history but its all around a really good read. These are all PNR Traumatized heroine books, unfortunately I have not had much luck finding more like these. I have become exhausted with the usual kick-ass-heroine-straight-from-page-one books I want more of the takes-many-chapters-to-overcome and the man having to tamp down his over eagerness to help her and earn her trust. Its too easy to find these books in HR's but not soo much in PNR's so if anyone has suggestions I would love to hear them.

'Written in Red' and 'Alpha and Omega' aren't paranormal romances but urban fantasy novels. It's probably why you're not getting much success -- you want paranormal romance novels but you're actually looking through urban fantasy novels.
With that said, here's a list split into the two genres:

Urban fantasy



In the 'Downside' series the main character, Chess, has a lot of issues such as drug abuse. The love interest is surprising but he's very endearing. It takes him a while before he's allowed through Chess' personal barriers.
It says you've not read the 'Mercy Thompson' series by Patricia Briggs so I thought I may as well recommend it. Mercy has issues from her past and she overcomes some serious obstacles in the series.

Paranormal romance

1. 'Broken Hearts Vampire' series. Written in a lighter and fluffier tone than what you're looking for but residents of a neighbourhood have been recently turned into vampires. Some of them are not enthusiastic about the change than others. Starts with:

2. Over the course of each of these series (you may want to explore their other series by these authors), they focus on male and female characters with tortured pasts:



* Prequel to Sherrilyn Kenyon's 'Dark Hunter' series: Book #1 is actually .
* Disappointingly, #1 is more of an introduction to the 'Dark Ones' series but it does have what you're looking for.

That's all I've got for the moment. I've mentioned most of the big authors but I suspect some people will later comment with a list of specific authors to look out for.

I want the like button for Izzie post. I will personally try a couple of those that had skipped my notice somehow.

In the pnr I think she might also like the Psy/changeling serie Slave to Sensation
it's full of heroines with problems there as well.


And in the uf she might like a lot the Colbana series. She's quite entire to begin with but as the title suggest things do not go very well. It is quite engaging serie up to now Blade Song

If you want to try something different, from the usual uf/pnr always with a very damaged heroine and hero, Eight Million Gods might be very interesting.
