Pao by Kerry Young is good, it is set in the mid 20th century Jamaica and centres mainly around a Chinese Jamaican immigrant family. A brilliant read and highly recommendable
I highly recommend "The Black Jacobins: Toussaint L'Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution" by C.L.R. James.
The Black Jacobins is great but it's a bit dated. A better, up-to-date account of the Haitian Revolution is Laurent Dubois' Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution
The story of Toussaint L'Ouverture and the San Domingo Revolution is a fascinating tale as is the building of his mountain redoubt and his final end in a tub of quick lime. I first read of it as a youngster in "Richard Halliburton's Book of Marvels - the Occident" It is a colorful tale of adventure, mis-adventure and violence I will never forget.
