The first book in a series you haven't read before
Has anyone read Grave Mercy? The first in the His Fair Assassin series? It's been sitting on my TBR list and I'm thinking of using it for this prompt.

Oh good I feel better knowing someone has loved them!
I'm going to be reading and listening to StoryWonk's seminar series of Lord of the Rings. Since I've never read the series in its entirety, I'm using that for this prompt. Can't wait to delve in with them to this huge project!
Well I cheated on this a little as it was started late December, but most read yesterday and today. I read The Dark Is Rising which was recommended as a modern classic, and much beloved from people's childhoods apparently, but I'd never heard of it. I do like some YA and fantasy stuff, though I didn't love this exactly. I did find myself thinking 'hmmmm, might check out the next one' though so it wasn't all bad!
Emma wrote: "Well I cheated on this a little as it was started late December, but most read yesterday and today. Don't ask me why, but the first book in "The Dark Is Rising" is Over Sea, Under Stone. The good news, I guess, is that the first two books are markedly different from each other in tone and style, so perhaps you will like the first book better.
So I'm very much divided on this one. I love a good series, and there are so many series that I want to read! The problem is I'm always afraid to start a new one because it has a tendency to take over my life! I'm leaning towards one of the following:A Game of Thrones
The Templar Legacy
The Beekeeper's Apprentice
Decisions, decisions...
I read Sign Off by Patricia McLinn. It was a freebie I downloaded and fit the criteria. It was decent - I'd read more in the series if I needed something, but wouldn't seek them out.
I am reading Cavendon Hall by Barbara Taylor Bradford for this challenge.....its the 1st in a 3 book series. It so happens i am also doing the Modern Ms Darcy challenge and one of the challenges is to read 3 books by the same author.......so reading these 3 books will earn me 2 checks off 2 lists!!
A friend of mine recommended Gone by Michael Grant, which I just finished reading today. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it at first, but I got caught up in how intense the storyline was. The author did not tone down any violence or anything, which made it realistic and shocking. The characters had problems and flaws and made messy moral decisions, but they had their good points too. All in all a good read, although I'm a little scared for the second book, Hunger. Eeek!
Series I haven't read any part of could be interesting. Not sure how to be sure I haven't read any part though. My memory is really bad from the TBIs and I can read a book and not recognize that I have even looked at it before until the last few pages.
I've read the first book of the Micah Grey series for this prompt. It starts of a bit slow, but now I can't wait for the second book in this series! Pantomime by Laura Lam
I chose The 5th Wave as I've had the movie forever and my rule is I don't watch the movie till I've read the book :)
This prompt was my first of the year, so I read Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. Definitely a good read and a nice start to the challenge. I have the next book in the series and I've already spied plenty of prompt I can potentially use it for
I read The Young Elites by Marie Lu and didn't like it that much... But I have Darker Shade of Magic and Six of Cross waiting for me, as well as The Knife of Never Letting Go... Plenty of series to start !I highly recommend Alison Goodman's Dark Days Club – it's a lot of fun.
For anyone wanting to start the Chief Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny the first book (Still Life) is on sale for $2.99 on Amazon today. It's a great series. I've read the first two and am planning on reading the third book for a book set during a holiday other than Christmas.
I recently finished Artifact for this category. I'd read and enjoyed the Accidental Alchemist series by Gigi Pandian and have been eager to check out her first series featuring Jaya Jones. This book would've also fit a few other categories for me, including "A book by a person of color" or "A book where the main character is a different ethnicity than you."
I read a lot of series but I've been saving The Dresden Files for 2017.I read Storm Front in 4 days. I read Jim Butcher's Codex Alera finishing it in early 2016. My son tells me the books keep getting better as you get farther into the series.

I started this series in Nov., so I can't use it now. Loved the books, loved the hero! I'm looking forward to the next one.
Emma wrote: "Well I cheated on this a little as it was started late December, but most read yesterday and today. I read The Dark Is Rising which was recommended as a modern classic, and much belov..."I am re-reading that series for the first time since the late 70's!!
I discovered it by accident when I was in middle school and loved it. A couple of years ago, I bought the entire series in omnibus form and it has held up so well!!
Going to go with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children since I've been meaning to read it for awhile now.
I read Star Nomad by Lindsay Buroker for this one. A fun new space opera by a fantasy author. Great characters and adventure!

Oh I read that! It was just okay. It was pretty silly, really, but enjoyable enough. The second book was really bad, and I never read the rest.

I read I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You. It's definitely the first in a series - and not my favorite. I won't read the next ones.
I just started reading 'The Last Kingdom' by Bernard Cornwell for this challenge prompt, really liking it so far!
I read Farthing for this. It's a murder mystery set in a big English Josie, which at first didn't capture my interest, but it's in a 1949 where England made peace with Hitler, who is still taking over all of Europe. Ended up loving it and I'd be starting the second. book now but oddly my library doesn't have the next two on Overdrice.
The Bat by Jo Nesbo for this (first of the Harry Hole series), absolutely loved it and now I've finished all 10 books from the series. Very much looking forward to The Thirst being released in April! :D
I've noticed that often when I put in a new book in Goodreads it'll come up in parentheses (boop boop #6) or whatever. Does this mean that it is part of a series? I only ask because it's happened with book I've read that I didn't realize we're series. I'm reading a book for book club and it doesn't seem to fit another prompt but when I added it, it had that in parentheses. So can I use it for this prompt? I feel like it may be one of those standalone type series like a murder she wrote, Robert Langdon etc type as opposed to one that requires reading the others to finish the story so if that counts it would be better because I won't have to finish more books!

yeah if GR says it's #1, I think it counts, even if you didn't know it was a series, or it's more of a "standalone" series.

It says #1 so, unless something else pops out (like an unreliable narrator), I will be counting it! Thanks :)
For this one, I just finished Every Heart a Doorway. It was a pretty amazing book, could have also been used for the category with mythical creatures but it was the first in the series so it fit and left me the opportunity to find a different book with mythical creatures. I didn't want to put this one down and now I'm off to find number 2!
I highly recommend the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante. They were absolutely amazing and an emotional rollercoaster. I highly recommend it! The whole series can satisfy some categories. My Brilliant Friend- The first book in a series you haven't read before
The Story of a New Name- A book by an author who uses a pseudonym
Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay- A book by an author from a county you've never visited (If you haven't been to Italy)
The Story of the Lost Child- audiobook, a book you bought on a trip, anything else you can think of!
Seriously, start this series. You won't regret it!
I read A Darker Shade of Magic. I'm definitely going to read the next ones, and I got through it very fast because the plot is so fast paced.
Hi, does anyone recommend Cinder? Is it noticeably YA?I read A Darker Shade of Magic and really liked it, but not yet sure if I am going to place it under this prompt or else 'a book with a red spine'.

I liked Cinder a lot, I recommend that entire series. I'm not sure what you mean by "noticeably YA" - the characters are in their late teens and early 20s for the most part, so in that sense yes it's noticeable, but I think this book has all-ages appeal. (Just for comparison: I really did NOT like A Darker Shade of Magic, I thought that was boring, and I disliked the characters. So I'm not sure how much my opinion is worth!)
