Rachel (rachelbenoit) I just finished The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. It was absolutely beautiful.

Diane | 5 comments Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson is a good autobiography
The Barbarian Nurseries by Héctor Tobar is a great book about the immigrant experience

Liv Orton Swing Time by Zadie Smith. I've read some of her other books, which I enjoyed. Her new book Swing Time is receiving a lot of buzz.

Augusta Justice | 7 comments I just finished Drinking From a Bitter Cup by Angela Jackson-Brown. I highly recommend this book! It's a first novel, and I'm excited to see what Ms. Jackson-Brown writes next.

Chinook | 731 comments I don't plan in advance for challenges - I fill in prompts as I go with the intent to then switch in the last few months to more actively filling the prompts that are left.

This was a catergory that I knew I could fill over and over, so I just slotted in the first book that didn't fit anywhere else - I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual. It was okay and definitely got better in the second half.

Hanna (hannasw) | 9 comments I'm currently reading The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, I think it counts for this prompt?

message 112: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 731 comments I read The Fire Next Time for the Book Riot prompt of a classic by an author of colour and it's very good and also fairly shoet, in case anyone is looking to catch up.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments This may be a silly question, but would Tahereh Mafi be considered a person of colour? I couldn't find much about her background. The book I originally had in mind for this prompt seems to be unavailable from the library, so I was thinking of reading Ignite Me instead to finish off the series.

I have had that problem too - sometimes it's hard to tell! She's Iranian-American, so I think that counts as a person of color.

I just learned that Keira Cass is Puerto Rican, I had no idea, so I think she counts as well (if you need another YA-type option).

Tytti | 355 comments Why would a Puerto Rican be automatically POC? Or an Iranian for that matter?

I personally consider anyone of non Anglo-Saxon decent to be POC. So like myself who is Mexican-Asian would be considered POC in my opinion. But I know others have different views of what it is to be POC.

Well, that would include me, too, then. Though around 1900 we were not considered white by the US government, so I guess it's fine.

poshpenny | 1916 comments I found a great website!

African American Literature Book Club
Mission: To Celebrate Black Culture Through Literature and Literary Nonfiction to Readers of all Backgrounds and Ages

Lots of books, authors, and lists to browse. They list award winners, too, all nicely sorted with video clips and everything you might want to know.

My TBR is going to grow much longer!

that looks like a great site!! and it's not just snooty "literature" so if anyone is put off by the page name, don't be, they've got ALL kinds of books listed! Lots of exploring to do there.

Anshita (_book_freak) | 273 comments After reading Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, I thought I should read more books by Roxane Gay, therefore I'm reading Bad Feminist for this prompt.
