PennyD (goodreadscomgreymowser) | 6 comments Totally agree. I'm considering deleting Goodreads and stick to Library Thing.

I, too, miss all of those things, Kristel.

I still use our old shelfari system of finding a book to read a topic/tag, but over at LT is where I can do that. For those who don't know, someone at shelfari (in the Play Book Tag group) once suggested tagging all our books on the tbr with our initials (or something that will likely be unique). At shelfari, you could combine tags to see what books fit. You can also do that at LT, but it's not possible here. So, my tbr is more up to date at LT, because I can do that combination tag search.

The one thing I prefer here to LT (besides my favourite group!) is that there are more images, so it looks more appealing.

And, it's a bit easier to use, especially when starting out. I put that up to LT just being able to do so many things, so there is so much more to learn (in addition to where to get to each of those things)!

I find it cumbersome to use LT for tags. How exactly do you do it it? Do you have to scroll through all books to see which ones you have?

message 57: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) | 77 comments I like LT and my groups over there a lot. I’ve found I hardly check in to anything but my main group here on GR which means I belong to groups but I really don’t participate. The format makes it too hard to follow along so I have given up. I mostly participate at Reading 1001 here on GR.

True.

You mean to combine two tags? Super-easy (though a few clicks...)!

1. Use the main search box to start and enter the two tags you want to search together with a comma in between: csw, historical fiction.

2. On the left menu, select "Tags".

3. It gives you a link that says this: "See a tagmash of csw, historical fiction." Click that

4. It lists anything that has both tags. You can do it with more than 2 tags, as well.

Also, once you are on this screen, there are fewer clicks if you want to try another. At the top there is a search box that says this: "Try another tagmash?" Type your tags, separated by a comma and click Search. Done!

LibraryCin | 196 comments Kristel, if you want, I can probably private message you over there with screen shots, if that's easier. Let me know!

Sallys | 3 comments I really miss Shelfari. It had a much nicer look and feel and and better discussions.

Thanks Cindy, that was super nice! I did Scotland and 1001 and got exactly what I wanted, wished I would have asked you a year ago.

I was using the tags a bit but going at a different way and it wasn’t as easy, this was really great.

Laurie (laugal) I agree with Sharon!

message 67: by Jerry-Book (new)

Jerry-Book | 25 comments Like others I am a former Shelfarian. I have almost given up on GR. As others have noted the discussions are hard to follow. I have not been happy in any Groups over here. I did once try LT but it seemed nothing was going on over there. If anyone has any suggestions for active groups over at LT I will give it another go.

nx74defiant | 7 comments The only thing I really like on Goodreads are the discussion groups. Everything else I go t o Library Thing.

I think the best places to start over at LT are the Challenge group and the Read 75 books group. It still isn’t Shelfari. I also kind of like Litsy.

Agreed. And Agreed!

I'm not in the Read 75 group, but here is a link to this year's category challenge group.
http://www.librarything.com/groups/20...

The group does have a lot going on, so feel free to ask for help/more information. There are a lot of challenges, but you can pick and choose which ones you want to do! Most people also set up their own threads to keep track of all their challenges.

This is my personal challenge thread:

message 71: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments Just an added note: Litsy is an app for your phone or tablet. It's not a website. It is heavy on photos, I think similar to Instagram? (Though I'm not on Instagram, but I think I've heard that.)

I am on Litsy, but it's not my favourite, as I'm not big on taking photos with my tablet (I don't have a smartphone), though I can and do share without photos, as well.

message 72: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments Added tip for LT groups. Once you join or watch a few, just click on "Talk" in the brown banner at the top.

I'm not sure what the default is, but on the left menu, you can then select "Your posts", which will bring up any of the threads, you've commented on and you can easily see if there are new unread comments.

If you haven't yet commented on anything (or very much), you can select "Your groups and posts" or just "Your groups" to see what threads are being posted and commented on in all your groups. This will bring up more activity and you might find additional threads you want to comment on or follow, or just read through.

Of course, you can always pop into each group separately, as well.

I'm on LT (have been for years before Shelfari's demise). I mostly use it as a back-up of my reading record. I don't find it intuitive or easy to use. I don't like that you cannot go back and edit the title of a post/thread. And LT does not have nested remarks either.

I've joined several challenge groups here on Goodreads and was doing those while still on Shelfari. Basically in those days I used GR for challenges, and Shelfari for discussions.

I agree that the lack of nested remarks makes it more challenging to discuss a book but several groups seem to have found decent alternatives for this. PBT is one such group.

I have found LT is very tempermental and so right, the groups just don't seem active,I just us LT fro catalouging.I do like GR better than LT and do not understand why Amazon cannot make it more user friendly. I too like my old groups here, but the discussions are difficult to follow.

message 76: by Jerry-Book (new)

Jerry-Book | 25 comments Thanks for all the comments about LT v. GR. I also thought not much going on in groups on LT. I tried a few groups at LT but they didn't seem very active.

For the groups here on GR that you belong to ... do you "follow" the discussions?

There's a link at the bottom of each thread Notify me when people comment If you click that you'll get a notification that there's new activity in that thread.

You can also choose to follow ALL threads/comments in a particular group so you get notification of any activity in that group.

I typically do not do this, because I'm on the site every day and check all my groups routinely. But if I'm running - or participating in - a particular challenge, I'll follow that thread for the duration, so I can keep on top of things.

message 78: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments There is a thread in this group about LibraryThing, but I don't think there's a lot of helpful info there at the moment.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I am wondering if we should start a Litsy thread, if anyone wants to find out more about it...?

message 79: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 196 comments I'm going to start a Litsy thread, in case anyone wants to comment on it, over there. This thread has strayed far, far away from "Missing shelfarians"!!! LOL!
