message 9: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I finished my first book of the year and for the challenge Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop.
I read this book for 31. A book from a sub-genre of your favorite genre. Fantasy is my favorite genre and this is an urban fantasy book.
This is a great series and I hope to be able to read the remainder of this series this year. Because I really want to know what happens next.

message 10: by Rikudou (new)

Rikudou Sof (rikudouensof) | 4 comments i have done the blood mirror. but that is spillover from last year now i am looking for something for this year

message 11: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments If you read The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden/Analfabeten som kunde räkna by Jonas JonassonI would love to hear what you think about it. I've read his other book about the 100-year old and remember it as a funny book, but I've been hesitating to read the other book.

I'm also planning in reading A Monster Calls :-)

message 12: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Marina H wrote: "If you read The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden/Analfabeten som kunde räkna by Jonas JonassonI would love to hear what you think about it. I've read his other book..."

I'll let you know when I've read the book, I read the 100-year old man last year and liked it. But it wasn't one of my favorites. So I'm curious what I'll think about this book.

I saw A Monster Calls on a lot of plans :)

message 13: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments My second book of the year is The Fate of Ten by Pittacus Lore, I read this book for 24. A book written by at least two authors.
I enjoy this series a lot, it is fun and has a lot of action. But the ending made me sad. Only one book left in the series.

message 14: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I didn't want to go outside with the snow, so I finished my third book this month Cinder by Marissa Meyer for 30. A book from GoodReads top 100 YA books.
It is a great start to the series, I had heard a little bit about the book but most of it was still a surprise. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
Do I need to read the short stories? I haven't read Glitches and The Little Android.

message 15: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Glitches is a prequel, set when kid Cinder became a cyborg. I didn't find it great but it's a quick read if you want more informations :)

message 16: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Thanks, might read it later then :)

message 17: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Thanks Katie! I just found out today I don't have Memoirs of a Geisha, but a book called Geisha. Have to look at that prompt again :)
Happy reading to you too!

message 18: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I should post you my copy, Lieke. I wasn't a fan, it's sitting in my bag of nope books that I'm giving away.

message 19: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Thanks Jody, but I have over 200 books I already own on my TBR :)
I only picked this one because I thought it was on my TBR.

message 20: by Lieke (last edited Jan 09, 2017 02:49PM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I should do that I already have this book at home for a long time. Just have to see for which prompt I could use it :)
Then I'll put it there as one of the possibilities.

message 21: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments That is the easiest prompt to fill ;)

message 22: by Lieke (last edited Jan 13, 2017 05:46AM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I finished reading Dead Until Dark for prompt 47. A past suggestion that didn't win: A book by an author from a country other than your own, I picked this book because I wanted to start this series. I enjoyed the book but it is not near my favorites list. I'm not a fan of the insta-love, but enjoyed the mystery part.
I liked Sam and Eric, I'm curious how the story will continue.

message 23: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments The first few books of the series are great - my favourite is the fourth. It goes downhill, in my opinion, not long after, but they are definitely fun fodder to read when you need something light.

message 24: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I read De dagen van het hert by Liliana Bodoc for 7. A book with an animal on the cover or in the titel. No animal on the cover but the titel in english is: Days of the Deer.
The writing style was not for me.
I liked the story idea but for me it didn't work how it was written.
The original language was Spanish so I don't know how much was because of the writing or the translation.

message 25: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Jody wrote: "The first few books of the series are great - my favourite is the fourth. It goes downhill, in my opinion, not long after, but they are definitely fun fodder to read when you need something light."

Thats good I own a few more in the series and easy reads can be very good in between heavier topics or thick books.

message 26: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm reading #11 at the moment, along with War and Peace! It's a nice balance. :)

message 27: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I read two side reads:
Sleutels van chaos by Hati Bell
Dagen van schaamte by Lieneke Dijkzeul
Both 3 stars by Dutch authors:
The first was a great story but the writing could have been better.
For the second the writing was very good but I didn't like the story.

message 28: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Today I finished reading Mycket mer än så (Alone for the ride) by Sarah Dessen.
A fun YA, with a little tear and a good ending.

message 29: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I read Charmed Life by Dian Wynne Jones.
A good middle grade book, although the characters weren't very likable.

message 30: by Lieke (last edited Jan 27, 2017 12:20PM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Finished my 10th book of the year Up by Myrthe van der Meer.
It is the second and last book in a series, so I finished my first series of the year :)
It is a very emotionally impressive book. It definitely gave me a lot to think about.

message 31: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I had a great start of the year I managed to read 11 books in January. Yesterday I finished book 11 The Tournament at Gorlan by John Flanagan. I loved reading about a young Halt and Crowley. And it makes me want to read the Ranger Apprentice books again to see the difference between then and now.

message 32: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I listened to some of the Ranger Apprentice books last year. They were very pleasant to listen to, but somehow I've kind of forgotten about the series again. I should continue it soon.

11 books... that's a great start! If you keep that up you could finish the challenge twice :-)

message 33: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Thank you Marina and Katie :)

message 34: by Anna (new)

Anna | 1007 comments Great start to the year, Lieke!

message 35: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Finished the first book for February Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. I read it for 14. A book with a strong female character. I liked it a lot, some things you knew from the beginning that they where going to happen but that didn't bother me. I liked the writing and the characters.

message 36: by Lieke (last edited Feb 06, 2017 11:45AM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I just finished Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris. As long as you don't take it too serious it is very enjoyable.
We started reading this series with a few people in another GR group so I'm sure it is on other peoples bookshelf :)

message 37: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 242 comments Lieke wrote: "I just finished Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris. As long as you don't take it too serious it is very enjoyable.

I read all but the final book in the series several years ago. As long as you don't read more than a couple at a time, they are enjoyable. The show was entertaining as well!

message 38: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I totally agree, Brooke! They are lots of fun, but in small doses. I've got two left in the series now, but I'm taking my time in between.

message 39: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I'm planning on reading one each month so I have enough reads in between :)

message 40: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I think the series goes (mostly) downhill after the fourth or fifth book, but they're still fun reads.

message 41: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I read The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman for prompt 3. A book you meant to read in 2016.
It is de 2nd book in The Invisible Library series.
I liked the book, but you need to keep focused to follow what is going on. I like the fae, the dragons and the alternate worlds.

message 42: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Yesterday I read Little Fur by Isobelle Carmody for 17. A book with illustrations.
A fun children's book about how humans destroy nature and a little elf troll saving the day. I have no idea when I bought this book, it was a total surprise to me that I owned this book. But it was a great little book. Now I have to find out if I can get the other books in the series.

message 43: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I finished reading Hardboiled Hard Luck by Banana Yoshimoto. A thin book with two short stories the first story was a bit strange. The second story was a bit sad but also sweet.

message 44: by Lieke (last edited Feb 14, 2017 10:40AM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I read Hydrhaga by Kim ten Tusscher for 4. A A title that doesn't contain the letter "E".
A dutch fantasy book, it was her debut book. I liked the story, but I think it could be a lot better. I think the series she wrote after this is better.

message 45: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 242 comments Are you planning to read A Song of Ice and Fire #4 and #5 this year? They aren't as good as the first 3, unfortunately. A lot of time spent in Dorne and with the Greyjoys, which doesn't seem to add much overall to the series' outcome. Do you also watch the HBO series?

message 46: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I'm planning on reading them, but I did that last year too so will have to see how far I get. But I want to start book 4 this month.
I watched the first two episodes of the HBO series, but I was missing too many thing from the book.

message 47: by Lieke (last edited Feb 19, 2017 01:50AM) (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I finished De dagen van de Schaduw by Liliana Bodoc for 21. A book that is a continuation of a book you've already read. It was a little bit better then book 1, read the 1st book last month. But still not good, two stars.

It took me little bit more then a month, but I read a few pages each day and today I finished Verhalenverteller, het leven van Roald Dahl by Donald Sturrock (743 pages).
It was interesting to read more about Roald Dahl's life, but sometimes it was hard to follow the timeline and I would have liked to read more about him writing his children's books.

message 48: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments Yesterday I finished The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones. I liked this book more then Charmed Life the first book in the series that I read last month.

Lieke | 697 comments I read another fun children's book The Battle of Hackham Heath by John Flanagan. I'm now up to date in this series, have to wait to see when the third book will come out.

Lieke | 697 comments I finished my first book of the month, it took me a bit longer because I was on holiday the first week of the month.
I read A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin for 35. A book where one of the main characters is royalty, only one book left and then i'll be up to date.
