What are you reading? Any suggestions? Buddy reads?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay! Loretta, glad you joined! I want to read that book too! You are reading so many books I want.

message 3: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) I've intended to read the Lymon Chronicles for years, so I'm excited to have others to read them with. I haven't read any other DD either, but have a friend who loves them. I've picked up volumes 1, 2, 4, and 5 from used book stores, so I'm set for the first couple at least. Looking forward to it!

Yay. Susan, I really loved the first book. I hope you will enjoy it too.

Susan O (sozmore) Currently I'm reading Far from the Madding Crowd and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. I usually read a lot of non-fiction, classics, some fantasy and cozy mysteries to lighten the mood. Nice to see a couple of familiar names here.

Jen Hodgson Good evening all. Not sure if this is your kind of bookmark but I'm reading a Cecelia Ahern novel called 'Flawed' at the moment. It's described as a YA but to be honest I think it packs a punch that all ages can appreciate. Getting through it at a rate of knots!

Looking forward to the Lymond chronicles as well : )

I only read P.S. I Love You. Have you read much of her work?

message 8: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson Alex, I've read every book she's written lol. Apart from Flawed I also loved Ps I love you and A place called here. In 3rd is probably Thanks for the memories.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I did like Ps I love you. I was Surprised how different the movie and book were.

message 10: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson I find tv / film adaptations to be very hit and miss. Ps I love you was a big disappointment and I don't feel that Where Rainbows end (Love, Rosie) should have been made into a film at all!

There are a few out there I've really enjoyed; are you a Jane Austen fan? Pride & prejudice was done by the BBC in a 6 part series with Colin Firth - this is only adaptation of this book I will consider watching - don't even get me started on the Keira Knightly film version! It was very authentic to the period and the casting was spot on.

Another TV adaptation which I quite enjoyed was 'The scarlet pimpernel' with Hugh Grant.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Jane Austen! I haven't watched he BBC series. I will have to check it it.

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson If you have access to Netflix I think it's on there : )

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I do! I will have to search for it. I love Pride and Prejudice.

message 14: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson It's a fab series.
You know, out of all the characters the one I wanted to know more about was colonel fitzwilliam! Ms Austen could have done a spin off lol

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol. I am reading Lady Susan right. I love Jane Austen.

message 16: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson There was a recent film adaptation of that one aswell with Kate Beckinsale, but my jury stilk out on that one - really should read the book again!

message 17: by Jen (new)

Jen Hodgson what's everyone thinking of reading in 2017? x

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Return of the King. Persians.

message 19: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) Now I'm reading Ivanhoe and The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo. Trying to make good headway on my challenges to leave plenty of time for DD starting in March. :) Looking forward to it.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

That is great Susan! I can't wait for it to start! I am reading the Return of the King. I am trying to finish it up tonight.

message 21: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) I love the Lord of the Rings. I reread it the end of last year with the group. Hope you're enjoying it.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I love it! What you are reading sounds interesting. I want to read Alexandre Dumas' novel this year.

message 23: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) I plan to read The Count of Monte Cristo sometime this year too. I've read the Musketeer series and love it.

I have been seeing The Black Count everywhere. Is it as interesting as it seems?

Susan O (sozmore) Renee wrote: "I have been seeing The Black Count everywhere. Is it as interesting as it seems?"

It was to me Renee. I learned a lot I didn't know not just about The Count, but about the French Revolution, the situation in Saint Domingue (present day Haiti) of slaves and free people of color, and the civil rights situation in France for people of color. Many surprises. I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Susan! I'll be moving that up on my TBR. :)

I'm finishing the Riyria Revelations right now. Also reading A Passage to India. And a few others. I always have about 6 books going at the same time, which works as long as none are too similar.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

6! That is a lot. 3 is usually my max.

message 29: by Giki (new)

Giki | 272 comments I and currently reading 'Wolf Hall', my husband read it and loved it so has been nagging me to read it too. I made a deal with him that I would read 'Wolf Hall' if he would read 'the game of kings', I think he has given up though, It is just not his cup of tea (:-o), I will finish 'Wolf Hall' though - just so I can apply emotional blackmail at the end..... so far I am tentatively enjoying it, I like the blunt style of writing and the understated witty dialogue, the timeline jumps about like crazy though which 'does my head in' and there is a lot of exposition of historical detail which I find quite exhausting.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds really interesting Giki. I will have to check it out.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I just started Ready Player One. It reminds me of Willy Wonka.

message 32: by Renee (new)

Renee M | 346 comments Mod
Lol! Wonka for gamers!

message 33: by SamuraiKitty (new)

SamuraiKitty | 155 comments "Wolf Hall" is a great book, as is the sequel "Bring Up the Bodies".

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I am reading Civil Disobedience and other Essays by Henry David Thoreau and I have to say WOW. My mind is blown.

message 35: by Giki (new)

Giki | 272 comments I love a bit of HDT, if I could stand to eat beans every day and didn't mind the cold I would be out there building a shack in the woods for sure

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

lol I am really looking forward to read Walden now. Just great thinking. I am on his essay about walking.

message 37: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (dilwara) I am reading King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Sandra wrote: "I am reading King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett."

Nice! how do you like it?

message 39: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (dilwara) I am enjoying it but find it more of challenge than the Lymond Chronicles or the Niccolo series.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice to know!

Not_Your_Typical_Lannister (Leslie) | 80 comments I said I would try not to buy many more books till I read more of what I own, but I cracked. This deal I could not resist because after The Game of Kings I am going to need some light, fluffy, chick lit.

https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/list/disco...

I got Sweet Temptation. Has anyone read any Lucy Diamond?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice!

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a ton of books that I bought from the library. Library sales are the devil! Then what did I turn around and do! I bought 2 box sets and the diary of Mr.Darcy! Holy Moly!

Not_Your_Typical_Lannister (Leslie) | 80 comments Yep. March 30th our big Rotary book sale starts. I have started a list of books to watch for. Wil I stick to it? Doubtful.

lol. I got so many! for less than 20 bucks. I cannot resist.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I am almost done with Cloud Atlas! Whoopie! Soon I can really focus on Game of Kings.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Now that I finished Game of Kings, I started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Not_Your_Typical_Lannister (Leslie) | 80 comments I joined our brand new local book club and we decided just to pick something from the list of book kits they had right there ready for use. The only 2 on the list I had ever heard of were The Girl on the Train (which I have read) and Wild (which another member had read).

So we just started at the top of the list and took a book called Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet which nobody had heard of. I took it home and stated reading it blindly, not even reading the synopsis on the back. It is really enjoyable! I can't wait to get together with them and discuss it.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is one of my favorite books! It's such a beautiful, sad, loving story. I'm so glad you've found it and are enjoying it. I'm happy now, just remembering how much I loved it. :))))

Not_Your_Typical_Lannister (Leslie) | 80 comments Renee I am not a history person at all. I am ashamed to admit I had never even heard of these internment camps. I have learned a lot because this book made me want to look things up.

I am nearly done this book (40 pages left ) and don't want it to end.
