Alyssa | 7 comments I think the author might be Ursula Le Guin. I'm pretty sure I read the book less than 5 years ago. The beginning of the book describes a scenario where a criminal is punished by having their hand cut off. The man, who is the main character, and an insect-alien communicate telepathically and there's a pretty strong emphasis on the insect-alien's ability to perceive things based on pheromones. I think the insect-alien eventually is apprehended for some reason and is tortured by the people the man is working for and the man tries to save his new friend.

Any chance its a short story and involves the man being a host for aliens eggs? If yes, i think its a short story by Octavia Butler

I don't think that fits the narrative I remember. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Alyssa | 7 comments Solved!! It's 'A Matter of Profit' by Hilari Bell. YA fiction, which is probably why I couldn't find it in the adult section. Discovery credit goes to my brother.
