I think the author might be Ursula Le Guin. I'm pretty sure I read the book less than 5 years ago. The beginning of the book describes a scenario where a criminal is punished by having their hand cut off. The man, who is the main character, and an insect-alien communicate telepathically and there's a pretty strong emphasis on the insect-alien's ability to perceive things based on pheromones. I think the insect-alien eventually is apprehended for some reason and is tortured by the people the man is working for and the man tries to save his new friend.

You can edit your original post with some new info, if you remember/can answer some of those questions.
Any chance its a short story and involves the man being a host for aliens eggs? If yes, i think its a short story by Octavia Butler

Solved!! It's 'A Matter of Profit' by Hilari Bell. YA fiction, which is probably why I couldn't find it in the adult section. Discovery credit goes to my brother.
