Looking for a kindle book I read over a year ago.
A boy is living with his father (who is violent) and then a female soldier comes to stay in their house for the evening; the father attacks her and she kills him. There is an attack on the village and the house burns down. As he is fleeing with his last coins, he meets a girl who tells him that he can get recompensed by the king. They travel together to go to the king.
I remember that the boy's mother is alive--he ran away to go and find his father, and then couldn't just leave him when he discovered he was violent / didn't know how to get back. He meets up with the girl soldier at some later point in the book too.
