Ame | 1744 comments "My dearest dearest Susan.

If you get this letter it means I am not coming back from the war. I saw this statue and its delicate feature reminded me of your beauty. I bought it for Christmas but since it is still 8 months away I am keeping it safe in hopes the war will be over by then and we can spend the rest of our lives together.

I am not good with words so forgive this short letter which I hope will never be brought to you. I miss you more than I can say and I can not wait for this war to be over.

I will love you until the end of time.
Anna"

Letter found in the box with the statue.

Haldis | 1288 comments I made cookies (well, actually my mom made cookies) for everyone to enjoy while reading these stories.
Chocolate chip or peanut butter.

Alison | 4756 comments I am enjoying everyone's stories. What an exciting life this figurine has had!

Cookies are yum. Both kinds. Thanks, Haldis. :)

Sabine | 3041 comments There is an interesting exchange of letters between Lord Peter Wimsey and Matthew Spain, in which the two discussed the possibility that two of the murderer could be find in Los Angeles.

Goge | 641 comments For the record, I LOVE hats! I have a few. Straw hat for summer, and regular ones for cold weather. But not those lady-like ones. I love those fedora like. This fall, the hat to wear are those big ones with floppy rim. That's my next purchase :).

Goge | 641 comments The china girl.
My great grandfather was one of many from this area who got to go to America and make some money in mines or anywhere else. He could only afford to go by himself. His family, the wife and their five children, stayed behind. So he left. And the letters and some money came from time to time. And then stopped. For a longtime, years and years, there was not a word about him. Noone new what happened to him. One day, a decade later, he just showed up. Unharmed. Strong and healthy. With a few bucks and a little china girl as a gift for his wife. She asked but he was stingy with words. So life continued as such.
So a few years ago, mu cousin went to US for a vacation with her family. One day they walked the streets of NY and saw a name of a store that was her maiden name. Very Slavic-like last name. So she went in to ask about it. The old man who ran the story told her its his last name. She said the name is of Slavic origin. So he told her the story. His father was an immigrant from Europe who worked in NY docks. He met his mother, they fell in love and got married. Two kids, boy and a girl. And after a while, he became restless. Moody. Sad. Homesick. One day, he said he needs to leave and see his country again. He'll be back. He never did. The only thing that was left behind him was a little chine girl, a gift he gave to his American wife. His mother never remarried. She loved him till the day she died.
Then she told him her part of the story. They cried. And laughed. And then got to know each other in time. The family united. Over a man who loved two women.

So love Felix and Leonard. Especially Felix!

That's funny. I had to stop last night, and I stopped exactly there. I'm looking forward to my reading this evening. Maybe I'll manage to stretch it over three nights.

Sabine | 3041 comments I have read it immediately and can only say I love it. The main characters are loveable (especially Felix)and I like the split perspectives so much!

message 68: by Susana (new)

Susana | 250 comments The figurine is not really valuable, not in money value, at least. But for its owner it was precious. It was purchased by a kid who wanted the most beautiful present for his mother's birthday, and he found it in a garage sale. Picked up with care, the smile on his mother's face was worth spending all his meagre allowance. He was eight years old, and his mum was the most important person in his world.
They were poor, and lived in a bad place. Soon, the boy met the wrong people, made bad decisions. He and his mum grew apart, and one day he left his home as an angry young man to never come back. Many things happened, and he came to regret the way he had left, but did not find the courage to apologize.
Then, one day, he received a phone call, telling him about his mum's demise some time ago, and asking if he would want to claim her scarce belongings. There, in a locker, inside a painted wooden box with his mom's most valued trinkets, he found the figurine he had bought for the person who had always considerd him the most important person in the world

I'm tearing up here now. There are probably way too many stories like that. One wishes people would talk, though.

Well done, Susana!

Yes. There are probably some French boys and girls who share the same great-grandfather... ;-)

Calathea | 6034 comments There is still a bit over an hour left. Is someone coming up with a funny Halloween story for our china girl? :-D

I think we need some confetti!

Haldis | 1288 comments Strange things started happening after opening that box with the tiny figurine: pots falling too close to passersby, the piano collapsed, all the ice in the freezer melted, the dog and cat sleeping in the same bed...
It seemed to much of a coincidence, so I smashed that figurine to pieces!! Buahhahaha!!!!

Thank you for everyone participating. And thank you to Josh for the generous amount of audio codes!

And prepare yourself, lovely people. We have at least three more launch parties to look forward to before and around Christmas! Next it's going to be The Curse of the Blue Scarab, then Christmas Waltz and last (but not least!) So This is Christmas.

Josh is REALLY pampering us with all these books, isn't she?! EXCELLENT launches and launch parties ahead of us, Fanyons! :-)

So, which one are you looking forward the most? Or is it impossible to answer a question like that?

Haldis | 1288 comments Johanna wrote: "Thank you for everyone participating. And thank you to Josh for the generous amount of audio codes!

Impossible to answer, but I think Curse of the Blue Scarab sounds like so much fun......but a new Adrien and Jake.....yeah.....

Susana | 250 comments So This Is Christmas... Adrien and Jake will always be my favourite

Sabine | 3041 comments That is a very difficult question.
I am very curious to read The Curse of the Blue Scarab, I love the Christmas codas and there is the wonderful reunion with Adrien and Jake.
Elliot and Tucker are right around the corner, that is wonderful too!

Goge | 641 comments I must go with the obvious. AE. I love them so much and I missed them for so long. Tell me. Is Josh posting her codas on her blog as usual or is it only as a book?

I'm not sure about this. I think Josh's plan is to write a couple (or a few) new codas for the book, but that's as much as I know. I assume the new codas will also be on her blog, but... we'll have to poke Josh about this...

Yes, I will post the codas on the blog as well. There might be one or two exclusive to the book...I don't know. The ones in the books are usually a bit longer (I expand and edit) but this time around it's probably the final version going on the blog...
