Heather | 8550 comments Hey everyone! I'm back! No, my life is not as I had dreamed, but I'm catching up here, can't you tell?
Sorry I've been gone for so long. I want to thank Dirk for keeping it interesting and going!
And to all of you who have commented in the meantime, thank you for your participation. That's why I love this group, without me, the show still goes on. You all rock!

message 157: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments So we’ve heard a few comment about the weather in a couple different parts of the globe.
I know we have members from almost everywhere in the world, but it seems we hear mostly from those of the northern hemisphere.

Out of curiosity, who here lives where winter is about to set in? We don’t want to leave anyone out! No, this is not a thread about the weather, lol, but maybe some new people or some of you lurkers could chime in and let us know where you reside? Comment if you so desire! Let us get to know you a bit!

message 158: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments The temperature has been running 37 to 40 here in Merida. That's celsius. I can't take it anymore and am vacationing in the mountains of Chiapas where it never gets over 30. We've just entered the rainy season this week in Yucatan.

message 159: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Here on the SoCal coast we have sailed into our traditional May Gray, which precedes our June Gloom.

message 160: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments I’m surprised gray and gloom in CA! But I’ve never been to the area in which you reside, Ruth.

I live in the Philippines where there is no winter. I like to joke that we only have two seasons here: hot and hotter.

The record was 43.

message 164: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Holy crap! I had to look that up to Fahrenheit. That’s hot and it’s not even summer yet! Yes, where I live it does get that hot and even up to 120 (F) here and hotter yet down in southern Utah. But that’s usually in July or August. Weather here is weird. Before I moved here I heard it snowed in July one year. Random!

message 165: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Well, still nobody from the southern part of the world... I don’t believe with this many members we are all north. So here is your chance to comment! It’s not about art so if you feel inadequate or inferior or less informed than others in the group, you can comment here and still take part! Let’s here from you!

But you don't have our humidity. 60% in Yucatan is normal and 75 percent in August. Fortunately in august the temp is around 36 as it cools down a bit after May.

message 167: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Currently 38 degrees with 32 percent humidity. Wind 16 km

currently 38 and 32 humidity with wind at 16 km per hour here in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Temperature in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico currently is 24. Humidity is 45 percent and wind at 10 km per hour. Can anyone guess where I will be next Wednesday?

message 170: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments Here is one from the Soith Heather! We are heading into winter here on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is going down to 12C at night and 24 or so during the day. Getting just a bit cold to go swimming and the surfers are starting to wear wetsuits :)

message 171: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 4641 comments Hi Deborah,
Sounds still pretty warm to me ;-)
Here in Europe at the moment, even if its springtime, we have it rather cold: 14-15C at day and down to 4C at night.
Weather forecast expects it to go up with about 5 degrees at the end of next week ;-)

message 172: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Yay, Deborah! Thank you for weighing in from the south! All these temperatures in Celsius are confusing me. Lol I have to Google them to figure out how hot or cold you are talking about.

Geoffrey, where I’m from in Tennessee it doesn’t get quite as hot as here in Utah but it’s literally about 100% humidity. So I may complain about it being hotter here, but at least I can sit in the shade and not still be dripping wet as I was back in Tennessee.

message 173: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Oh, I just Googled 12C and that’s about 53F which is a high average of our nightly temperature. It’s a so called ‘desert’ here and it does get chilly at night. With our recent rain, it was about 5C (42F) at night.

Yes, I know :) I am kind of bragging really, that we are halfway into Autumn and still able to go for a swim. I really love the climate here.

I know what you mean Heather; I am reading a book at the moment about cetaceans published by the American Museum of Natural History; they keep talking about in feet and I have to keep looking at charts to figure out what it is in meters. Very aggravating.

message 175: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Hey everyone! I had a thought... tell me what you think! I don’t know if this will go over well with some people or with anyone so I’d like your opinions and suggestions.

Dirk is doing a good job at finding paintings that are least like the well-known art of the artists. He makes things interesting (and sometimes difficult). I thought of this today as I cheated and peeked at his choice for this latest post. I believe it’s pretty tricky!

So I would like to reward the person who actually guesses the artist. I will do this on some of the threads that are posted that seem more difficult. Not every single thread, though. This gives Dirk more of a challenge. Dirk, you’ve been doing well lately but please, still keep it to the more well-known artists. I don’t know all artists so it doesn’t necessarily have to be one I know, but if it’s one that the general populace of the group isn’t familiar with, it won’t count.

Do you have any ideas for some kind of prize? Something you’d want or like to do in the group? Something I can do for you?
Also, in general what do you think of this idea?

message 176: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments How about a free pass on a time machine to have absinthe with Go man Go?

message 177: by Heather (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 465 comments I also think that Dirk is doing a great job with his "Guess the Artist" thread. Adding the poems is a nice touch too. I try to guess just for the fun of it, and so I can learn more about art history. Personally, I don't need prizes for any of the challenges I participate in various groups on Goodreads. But I wouldn't have any objections if other people want to have prizes, including Geoffrey's idea :-)

message 181: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Thank you for your input, Connie!

Dirk Van | 4641 comments Thanks guys!
It's nice to read such praise at breakfast ;-)

About a prize... I have absolutely no idea... Maybe some kind of trophy?

On Belgian television we have a funny quiz that's called "de slimste mens ter wereld" (the smartest man in the world)
Candidates are more or less famous people and the winner gets a paper that states he can call himself just that for at least one year.

message 183: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments There’s an idea... hmmm thanks Dirk

message 184: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Henshaw (kristilou) Thank you Dirk in case for your stimulating thread. The glory is good enough for me. I like the challenge and it makes me think and research about a subject I love but have neglected for awhile...art history. Speaking of "The Smartest Man in the World" has anyone been following James Holzhauer on Jeopardy? Awesome!

Heather | 8550 comments I’ll post it here for now but I have an idea. Getting ready for work at the moment and will get to the award when I get back.

Kristine is our ART HISTORIAN EXPERT of the week (or at least until the next one)... WAY TO GO KRISTINE!!!

Until later...

Heather | 8550 comments Hello my fellow art loving friends who wished me well for my surgery!

I got a message from a confused Dirk the other day. He wanted to know how the surgery went especially since I think I posted a few times last Wednesday, the surgery ‘date’ (And since then) so of course it would seem confusing that I could be so active and also would-be anesthetized...

It was quite...frustrating is not the word, I was furious is more like it. They had called me during the day on Tuesday to go over my medications and tell me to quit taking NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Exedrine, etc) until after the surgery. Then she said she would call back that night between 6-7pm. As of Tuesday night I was still waiting for a call and didn’t get one. Nor the next morning. I didn’t know what time I was supposed to check in or even where to go!
I called the pre-op department at 6:30am and got an answering machine and left a message. Waited another two hours and called again, same thing. I left a message. Finally around 10am I called the main hospital and asked to talk to a human for heaven’s sakes! The charge nurse came in and told me my surgery had been canceled. Nice of them to let me know, right? She said I was supposed to stop taking Ibuprofen 5 days before the surgery. Nobody told me that! Then she said the office is supposed to call me
to reschedule. They didn’t. When I called on Thursday, it was the surgery scheduler person’s day off then Friday she was sick.
So finally, today I got it rescheduled for November 19.

So now you all can sleep at night knowing that, I’m sure you were wondering about it.

But on a different, more positive note, Art Lovers Rocks!

Heather - sorry to have been so out of touch in discussions, but if there is one topic I must commiserate/respond to, it's medical procedures! I hope everything on November 19th goes more smoothly than it has thus far!

message 197: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Well thank you so much Albin! That means a lot to me. no, we haven’t seen you for a minute so it’s nice to hear from you. Thank you for your thoughts.

message 198: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8550 comments Well, an update that probably isn’t of much importance to the group but being the moderator, I feel to keep you somewhat informed...

My surgery that was supposed to be this upcoming Tuesday the 19th was again postponed. *sigh* I iwas in the hospital last week (the reason for my absence and lack of activity in the group) and the surgeon wants to wait at least until I’ve been a month out. So it won’t be for at least another month but I haven’t gotten it rescheduled yet.

I’ll stop with the updates as they’re probably getting old. I know this whole procedure is getting old for me and I want it done and behind me!

Life! Ugh.

I hear you Heather. While I believe that the Australian medical system is much easier than the American one, it is easy to feel powerless and as though your whole life is on hold. Good luck with it all.
