message 1056: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Hello everyone! I am Nicole. I am about to turn 35 this summer and I am a teacher, a mom, a huge book lover and a formerly active member of this challenge. I have to read through all the new guidelines but I am thinking about doing the summer challenge this year since work ends for me today (although it starts before the challenge is over, I can get a lot done in theory).

I will have to see how it goes because I got too stressed the last few times I did one (that's my type A perfectionist self right there). But this should be fun…so let me see if I can be fun about it!

message 1057: by Dana (new)

Dana (dstrazzeri) Hi everyone! My name is Dana, I am 38 years old and live in the Princeton, NJ area. I am a full-time Paralegal for a Clinical Research Organization. I am happily married to a wonderful man coming up on 2 years this September. I have one step-daughter and one step-son and have 4 "other" children as well: Otis, a 10-year old pug; Angel, a 17-year old cockatiel; Clancy "Cuz", a 4-year old cat; and our newest addition, Robin, a 7-month old kitten.

I have loved reading ever since I was a small child. No matter where I am I have my book with me and read every chance I get. I joined Goodreads in 2008 but didn't join any groups until about a week ago. This is the 2nd group I am joining.

I am looking forward to seeing how this group runs and meeting and making new friends.

Thanks,
Dana

Nicole,

I'm seriously goal oriented myself. Once I commit to something, I have a really hard time not finishing.

One thing I've learned is to see small goals inside the big ones. Maybe to reduce stress, you could break the challenge up into smaller goals - the 30 point tasks, or the first ten on your TBR list. That could help make it more manageable and less stress inducing, maybe?

message 1059: by Lindzabeth (new)

Lindzabeth | 16 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Lindsay, I'm 23, a certified athletic trainer, and I'm currently a graduate assistant athletic trainer in South Carolina working on my masters in athletic training. Also, I'm getting married in a year!

My fiancé teases me constantly about how much of a book worm I am, but I've never participated in a challenge before and I'm super excited!

My favorite author is Kelley Armstrong. Her Otherworld series was really the first non-YA series I ever read.

I'm super excited to get started and to meet new friends who love reading as much as I do (and probably more)!

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 64 comments Hi everyone. I was (and still am) busy doing a team challenge in another group and my naughty but fabulous team-mates were all talking about this group (you know who you are...) And I just couldn't resist. As soon as I heard the words 'challenge', 'points' and 'reading' in the same sentence I knew there was no way I could say no.

Anyway, I am a 40 year old Mum of one little boy (Ethan, who is two and a half) with another baby due in just under 10 weeks time. As well as being a full time Mum, I am just about to start my dissertation for my MA in Creative Writing which will be due in September. I absolutely love reading - I have well over 1500 books at home (paper books, I am not an eReader type girl. Just too much of a dinosaur I think) and I am constantly buying more. I am somewhat addicted.

I am an Australian, born and bred in Adelaide, but I currently live in the UK in a little village in Surrey. We will be moving back home to Australia soon - probably next year.

I read most things, but especially classics, non-fiction, literary fiction and historical.

I have no idea how I am going to get on here, but it looks and sounds like a whole lot of fun, so I can't wait to get started!

Welcome, Linday! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and on your work for your Master's.

People like me need people like you working with us to get healthier and stronger. I just completed my first 5K this weekend and I couldn't have done it a year ago if I hadn't been working with a trainer!

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments Welcome, NancyHelen! You are going to love it here, and you'll get the hang of it soon enough :)

message 1066: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 64 comments Thanks Lindsey. I am so excited about it. I keep popping back to the tasks trying to figure out whether I can fit books that I am reading into them. Its so distracting!

message 1067: by ♞ Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments I knew you'd get here Nancy -- and I'm sorry, but my thinking is, "the more the merrier!" This is awesome fun, and I know you're going to have a great time playing with us!

message 1068: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments You should specialize in getting older people in shape. those over 60 have more time to work on this and more money to spend on trainers!

message 1069: by Elsbeth (last edited Jun 21, 2014 11:34AM) (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) Hi everyone!
I've been reading some of the discussions here and the challenges really sound like fun!
My name (as you can all see ;)...) is Elsbeth. I live in Nijmegen, a town in the east of the Netherlands, close to the German border (well, the Netherlands are so small, almost everyone lives close to the border or the sea :)!). I'm married and have 2 children. My son is 8, my daughter is 5. I have two rabbits. I love walking or cycling in the forest, reading and spending time with my family.
I love reading historical novels, thrillers, classics and loads of other books.
So, and now I'll take another look at this season's challenge and see what I can fit in!
Happy reading, everyone!

message 1070: by Jane (new)

Thank, Jane! Although I believe our (religious and otherwise) tolerance could be better (there is a political party here who in later years has gained some influence, who are very anti - Islam for example. I'm sad to say...). But overall the Netherlands is not a bad country to live in, I believe!

Fairly new to this though :P

message 1073: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) Hi!

I'm Irene, I live in Denmark and I'm 24. I'm currently studying information science and cultural communication - I think that's what it's called.
I like reading challenges, although I tend to fail at them, but I still find it motivating and fun! :D
I read mostly YA, but I like the majorities of genres; children's, horror, erotica, chicklit, mysteries etc. The only genre I tend to avoid is historical fiction.

Looking forward to play with you all :)

message 1074: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments For Irene, Mary Kay Andrews is good chick lit. Listen to her on audobook. You might have trouble with the Southern drawl, however.

message 1076: by Waitalie Nat (new)

Waitalie Nat Hi everyone! My name's Sara, I'm 19 and I'm currently living and studying in the Uk. I moved from Italy to England back in 2012 and in September I'll be starting my English Language and Literature degree course at King's College London :) I am a compulsive reader/book buyer (and an occasional baker!) and, throughout the past few years, I have accumulated way too many books on my shelves - thus, I figured that joining in some of these challenges could help me tackle my ever growing TBR pile. I can't wait to start! :)

message 1077: by Jess (new)

Jess H (jessicah_) Hi everyone I'm Jess,
First off I live in Australia.
I'm 15 years old and currently in year 9 at school. My chosen elective are child studies cause I love kids and Japanese cause it's just so fun to learn and it involves great experiences.
I love reading and would get paid for it if I could.

message 1078: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments Jess, another younger person who has joined us. Formidable!

message 1079: by Greta (new)

Greta Hi there, I'm Greta, from Minnesota. This looks like a complicated, challenging and fun group! My favorite genres are Fantasy (all kinds) and Historical Fiction.

message 1080: by Ursula (new)

Ursula (saintursula) | 11 comments Hi, I'm Ursula and I live in California. I'm 42, with 2 kids in college (Colorado and New York). I'm a sucker for a list or a challenge, so that's why I'm here. :) Looks like it's good timing, too, with the Fall challenge just about to start.

I read both fiction and non-fiction, and about half my reading tends to be from the 1001 Books You Must Read list, so there will be a fair amount of classics and a fair amount of kind of obscure stuff.

I'm more scattershot than completist when it comes to authors, so I don't have a lot of favorites, but I do like Haruki Murakami and Tim O'Brien.

message 1081: by Ana (new)

Ana (404-equivalent) Hi, my name's Ana and I'm from Slovenia. I'm 19.
My favourite genre would be fantasy, I love to lose myself in unique magical worlds. Still, I can read anything and I think this challenge will be great to explore new books from different genres.

I'm still a bit lost here and have yet to read quite a lot rules, but I think I'll really enjoy participating in this challenge. :)

message 1082: by S.L. (new)

S.L. Berry Hi, my name is Susan. I am from Georgia (the state, not the country). I am a staff attorney by day, writer-reader by night. I read most anything and am working on the 1001 book list and among others. I found this group from GR L&L group. Excited to be here.

message 1084: by Berls (last edited Aug 29, 2014 08:40PM) (new)

Berls Hi! I just realized I've been busy getting my books selected for the Fall SRC and completely forgot to introduce myself. Oops! I'm Berls (nickname for Kimberly) and I live in Dallas, TX. I'm 30 years old and have a book blog (Fantasy is More Fun). One of my blogger buddies (Angie/Pinkindle) told me about this challenge and I'm already addicted and looking forward to trying it out this fall :)

message 1085: by S.L. (new)

S.L. Berry Jane wrote: "Good luck. Near Savannah or Atlanta?"

West of Atlanta -- 1-1/2 hours -- near Alabama.

message 1086: by Jane (new)

Jane De vries | 74 comments Wow, I've never been to Alabama - lower Alabama is referred to as the LA of the South according to Mary Kay Andrews, a Southern who writes popular chick lit. The State is primarily agricultural - right?

message 1087: by S.L. (new)

S.L. Berry There's Birmingham which is like Atlanta and then there's Huntsville -- Nasa and military and then there's the gambling at the coast but yes.

message 1088: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (cynthiabaxter) | 4 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Cynthia, I live in Washington state but work in the great state of Mississippi so needless to say, I fly a lot - which means I crank out the reading...this Challenge sounds PERFECT! What a great idea - I wish I had known about this earlier.

I currently have 4,315 books in my little library - this does not include reference volumes. I think I just might have something here that would fit the tasks, lol

message 1089: by Kasia (new)

Kasia (stasia94) Hi! My name is Kasia (Katie, Katy, Kathy in english) I'm from Poland and i'm 20. I love reading (what a surprise), listening to music and drinking tea. And i do A LOT of those things. I'm a student of baltic studies and i'm trying my best to learn norwegian language.

I'm so excited for autumn! It's my favourite season.

Ann A (readerann) | 1091 comments Great to see all you newcomers from different parts of the world. This has become quite an international group!

message 1091: by LouLouReads (new)

LouLouReads | 221 comments Hi everyone! I'm from the UK. I'm Hannah (Loulou according to my challenge name, I think) and I am a nurse/PhD student/avid reader. I read basically everything apart from trashy romance and horror. Very excited about this!

message 1092: by Nox (new)

Nox (_nox_) | 11 comments Hello everyone.

My name here on Goodreads and most of the internet is Nox. I am 34 years old and live in a very tiny rural town in the Sierra foothills of Central California. I share my home with my wonderful husband, our six cat-children--all of whom are both spoiled and adored endlessly by us both--and a small flock of chickens who give us lovely eggs every day.

I am currently unemployed but am hoping that will change soon with the coming holiday season. I'm a huge geek and, besides reading and writing, my main hobbies include playing Magic, streaming Deep Space Nine and lots of PS gaming. I also spend a lot of time outside working and wandering amongst gardens of mine and Nature's making when I'm not in the house, escaping California's brutal drought, holding deep conversations with my cats.

I can't tell you a one favorite author. My favorite genre is fantasy/sci-fi. Historical fiction is a very close second. Of course, I adore Game of Thrones as both a reader and watcher. Patrick Rothfuss, George R.R. Martin, Anne Rice (extremely excited about Lestat's return on October 28th!) and Neil Gaiman are the first authors I think of when I press myself to quickly conjure favorites.

This is the first time I have participated in this challenge. I plan to go as far as I can with it and have as much fun as I can stretching my creativity and loving the competition. I'm still trying to get how everything works straight in my head so I'm starting slow to avoid mistakes (perfectionist) but am definitely reading.

I look forward to playing with you all this Autumn and getting to know everyone better as time passes.

- Nox

message 1093: by Catie (new)

Catie | 185 comments Hi everyone.

My name's Catie, and I'm from the UK.

I work as an archaeologist, and love my job - even though it's not quite as exciting as Indiana Jones might have you believe.

I read quite widely, my favourite genres are fantasy, historical fiction and "19th century novels by women", but I've been known to read a little of everything, with the general exception of crime novels.

I'm looking forward to taking part in the challenge in the hope that it will inspire me to read some of the books that have been sitting on my TBR for far too long.

message 1094: by Becca (last edited Sep 03, 2014 12:05PM) (new)

Becca (lupingirl) | 5 comments Hi I'm Becca (aka Lupingirl) and I'm an American from Georgia (hi Susan! I'm originally from Douglasville!). I currently live in Alberta, Canada. I've also lived in Alabama (Roll Tide!), Virginia, and Colorado. I love to read and just earned my MLIS and am looking for a Librarian position here while I work part-time at a bookstore. I also enjoy traveling, hiking in the mountains here, art, cooking, and baking, as well as needlecrafts like knitting, crochet, and embroidery. My husband and I have one dog of our own and also foster dogs for a local rescue. Although we may very soon have 2 dogs of our own because I've fallen in love with one of our current fosters, haha!

message 1095: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 4 comments Hi, I just learned about and decided to join the reading challenge today. It sounds like a lot of fun. My name is Deanna, I live in Northern California and I am 32 years old. I am married and have one son, a 7 year old who just started 2nd grade so now I will have more time to read!

I work full time as a shuttle driver at a casino. I work nights but I have my days to read. I obviously love reading and am excited to start the fall reading challenge.

message 1097: by The Book (new)

The Book (thebooktraveller) Hi everyone, I'm Max from London, England. I love reading fiction from around the world and often seek out books in translation or fiction and non-fiction set in countries that aren't the UK. I also love poetry. While I can't name a favourite author (wait, I lie - Terry Pratchett and James Herriot are both firm favourites) I can say with certainty that Yeats and Neruda are my favourite poets. And Alice Walker. And W.H. Auden. This favourites thing is harder than it sounds!

message 1098: by Narumon (new)

Narumon Hey Everyone,
I go by Narumon - a nicknamed that I inherited from the good old days of anime watching. I'm a 24 year old graduate student studying Computational Biology, so reading is one of the ways I keep myself sane.
English is technically my third language, and I was looking for a good way to discover new books when I came across this wonderful challenge (how I never knew about it before is a mystery never to be solved).
Looking forward to raiding the stacks at my local library for books that fit the tasks!
