Sally906 | 91 comments My tease is from The Brakys' Lair (The Liftsal Guardians #2) by Alexandra Moody The Brakys' Lair by Alexandra Moody.

‘The Brakys were once humans,’ Sloane started. ‘They were poisoned thousands of years ago and became creatures. One scratch from a Braky is enough to turn a human into a monster.’
Rowe covered her mouth as she gasped in horror.

Carolyn | 9891 comments Sorry I got a bit tied up and missed Tuesday Teasers again so here is a Wednesday one from the book I just finished Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

Now that she knew the name of the game - Scare Mommy - she should be able to defend herself. But goosebumps rose on her skin, even under the heat of the water, when she thought about her creepy daughter. The whites of her eyes. Her ability to sneak up on her as she slept.

It's one of those books people seem to either love or hate Brenda. Might depend how you feel about creepy children!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 10006 comments Thanks to PattiMac's review, I've borrowed Happiness from the library.

On the other side of the glass a bright-faced child threw back her head, stamped and screamed at the sky. A muted, time-lapsed version of the scream floated through the glass. The child's mother was on her knees apparently trying to reason with her daughter.
"Once upon a time," said Kathleen watching the mother and child, "that was what we called a tantrum and now it's --"
"Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder," said Attila.

Sally906 | 91 comments What do you know? It's a Tuesday and I'm posting :)

My teaser is from a YA Apocalyptic book by an Aussie author. Set in outback Australia it is the story of how a small community struggles to survive after a worldwide catastrophe when all the electrics are fried!!

After the Lights Go Out by Lili Wilkinson After the Lights Go Out by Lili Wilkinson

My teaser comes from about half way through the book when the community discovers one of the characters has been hoarding and keeping supplies hidden.

'You've been hoarding resources,' he says. 'What makes you think they are not going to do the same? You think they're going to let us queue up with everyone else to receive rations? The way I see it, there are two scenarios here. One - we are turned out into the wilderness to fend for ourselves, or two - we get executed.

Is due for release in August - and if this type of book is your thing then I utterly recommend it - was a 5 star read!!!

Carolyn | 9891 comments My teaser is from Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton, a conversation between two 12 y old boys spying on their step-fathers doing a drug deal:

"Where's your real Dad?"
"Bracken Ridge?"
"He good?"
Everybody wants to measure the adult men in my life by goodness. I measure them in details. In memories. In the times they said my name.
"Never want to find out" I say. "What's with you and men being good?"
"Never met a good one, that's all," he says. "Adult men, Tink. Most fucked up creatures on the planet. Don't ever trust 'em."

message 813: by Jazzy (last edited Jul 17, 2018 04:42AM) (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 944 comments After a while, though, I had to face the fact that we were just sitting there like bloody wallflowers, man, and I couldn't see what was going to change that. Not even Tommy had the balls to ask a chick to dance.
'How the hell are you going to get up on stage if you're too skaam to set foot on the dance floor?' he yelled in my ear.
I shrugged glumly.
Pastor Mullins had told us that Jerry Lee Lewis was possessed. He was born a poor boy, though his ma and pa mortgaged their farm to buy him a piano so he could nurture his God-given gift for music. Yet he forsook Elmo and Mamie and the Lord when he was expelled from the Assemblies of God University in Texas for playing the Devil's music. 'Great Balls of Fire' comes straight from the Book of Acts. It was the seminal moment in the Pentecost--the decent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus Christ--when the Holy Spirit manifested as cloven tongues of fire and the Apostles spoke in languages they had never known. When Pastor Mullins heard the blasphemous strains of 'Great Balls of Fire' as he administered to the fallen on the steps of the banqueting hall, he was as sure as he was of the Lord God Almighty that Jerry Lee Lewis knew he was playing for the Devil.
I spotted Johnny with a pretty blonde girl. She was wearing an Alice band and he was sweeping the floor with her. I was clicking my fingers along to Chuck Berry carrying on about rock 'n' roll music when he swung past and shouted, "Hey Chris, you cats are really jiving, man!"

Sally906 | 91 comments My teaser is from Westward Winds (Montana Mail Order Brides #1) by Linda Bridey Westward Winds by Linda Bridey

Tessa is from a rich family - and she is contemplating becoming a mail order bride to a Montana widower with two children

Tessa hid the books away during the day and only brought them out late at night. It wouldn't do for the servants to find them lying about. House servants tended to gossip. She studied them closely and took notes. The more she read the more excited she became. It was as far removed from the current life she led as could be. It would certainly be an adventure.

I should do something - unlock the front door so I can make an escape, or barricade myself into the stockroom. Instead, I am frozen in place, standing next to the counter, unable to make a decision.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 10006 comments “Right, I see, sort of accepting the rough with the smooth,” Jen had said.
“Oh, Jen, you love your clichés, don’t you?”
“Absolutely. You can’t judge a book by its cover, you know, Grace, especially as actions speak louder than words, and you’re better safe than sorry, because what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and, as I always say, there’s no time like the present, when the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but the grass is always greener on the other side, and love is blind, but ignorance is bliss.”
“Enough! Enough!” Grace had started laughing.
“Well, I hate clichés,” Jen had told her. “But I will use them against you. Consider yourself warned.”

Kylie D | 740 comments She might well have changed her mind later, thanks to Linda's eager encouragement, and perhaps in no small part to the warmth that emanated from Andrew Baxter, which stirred some response in her, despite her better judgement. Why would such a kind man deliberately set out to ruin her? It seemed oddly out of character, although what did she know? He was little more than a stranger. Yet he had provoked a curiosity in her, almost a need to learn more about him.

"I have an idea," I blurt out.

I cross to him, take the whiskey glass from his hand, and set it down. He looks surprised, knocked off-balance by my sudden determination. I take him by the hand.

"Trust me?" I ask, looking up into his eyes.

He grins wide, eyes creasing. He knows I'm up to something.

"Trust you," he answers. He squeezes my hand.

I lead him to the suite's entrance and unlock the door. But he pulls my hand back as I try to push down on the handle.

"Erin?" He stops me. The storm rages on the other side.

Andrea | 2179 comments she was the first girl to run around naked on these beaches, which were full of children all wrapped up like old presents. There was a man who, at prearranged times, would grab the shrieking packages and casually dunk them in the sea, indifferent to the children’s yelps of terror, while the mothers kept crocheting and placidly chatting, gathered in the blue-and-white-striped tents. That technique, it was thought, would bolster the children’s health and courage. Most of the members of that generation who experienced forced sea-bathing as children refused to learn to swim.

'Uh, yes,' answered Harold.
'Tell me, who was that old lady you were waving at earlier?'
'I wasn't waving at her, she was waving at me.'
Just then Maude drove by in Harold's hearse and stopped. She leaned out the window.
'Can I give you a lift, Harold?' She said.
Harold was struck dumb. Father Finnegan walked around to the window.
'Excuse me, madam,' he said, 'but are you not the lady who drove my car off yesterday?'
'Was that the one with the St. Christopher medal on the dashboard?'
'Yes.'
'Then I suppose it was me. Hop in, Harold.'

My new current read is War Brides by Helen Bryan War Brides by Helen Bryan - not very far into it but here is my teaser:

A small boat was waiting, already untied by the anxious old man. It rocked wildly as Tanni tripped and fell over the seat, banging her shin. There was water in the bottom of the boat and the skirt of her wedding gown was soaked. As the boat slipped away from the shore she begun to shiver as Bruno and the fisherman rowed. Above them the orange flames roared into the sky. There was a crash as the roof of the synagogue collapsed...
