"Nichol..."
I've got the first one in this series in my TBR pile - will get around to it one day :)

... he had recently acquired a compass from his friend, Ranald Braveheart Macpherson....
Bertie thanked him effusively. "You're really kind, Ranald," he said. "I wish I could give you something in return, but I don't really have much stuff."
"I'd noticed that," said Ranald. "But don't worry, Bertie, when you get older you might have more stuff and then you can give me some of it. I'll keep a note of what I give you so that you'll know how much stuff you have to give me."
That struck Bertie as perfectly fair, and it made it easier for him to accept the compass that Ranald had passed on.

His face, framed by that silky sweep of black hair, would have suited either poet or warrior with it's chiseled bones and full sensuous mouth. His eyes, that wild and wonderful blue, still had the power to weaken her knees
Aaaah, Roarke!

Carolyn wrote: " He looked like something fashioned from fantasy. The long, rangy body clad in black, would have looked just as natural in a billowing cloak or tarnished armor.

'I don't want to be seen with you, Tanner.'
'Can't colleagues share a friendly drink?'
There was a short pause before Detective Sergeant Mark Woods replied. 'We're not colleagues. What do you want?'
'A few minutes of your time.'
'I'm busy.'
'How about I pay you a short visit at home? Where do you live?'
'Outside your jurisdiction.'

"In the village of St. Piran they still speak of the day when the naked man washed up on Piran Sands. It was the same day Kenny Kennet saw the whale."
Opening sentences of Not Forgetting the Whale by John Ironmonger. I think this is going to be entertaining!

A huge flu like killer virus is sweeping the world - they are calling it The Doom. In this scene Jonah is a paramedic - with the death toll mounted he found he had an ability to look at someone and see if they were going to die. Nearly all have - he is depressed and thinking of taking his own life before he goes utterly mad. He goes to the hospital he is based at to say goodbye to his memories where he meets up with a doctor he has a crush on - she is immune too but does not appear to have any powers. She tells him billions have died and it is still going on. At this point they hear a woman cry out
"Please, please. Help me." No more death, he vowed. He wasn't going to look at any more death. "The babies are coming! I need help." He couldn't stop himself from looking back again, and saw the woman drag herself out of a bright red van, cradling her pregnant belly. "I need a doctor. I'm in labour. They're coming." He didn't see death, but life. Three lives. Three bright sparks.

I do enjoy Clive Cussler - we always have one of his books to listen to when we go for long drives :)

"We were lost, someone was saying. Someone else: We lost her.
It was hard to make the distinction. The women were calling, crying, their voices tumbling over one another.
Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe?
In the chaos, in the night, it was impossible to say which of the four had asked after Alice’s welfare.
Later, when everything got worse, each would insist it had been them."
Darkness had fallen across the streets of Adelaide. The soft glow of streetlamps cast small circles of light that didn't reach the darkest corners.

“…What you did in New York gave comfort to we don’t know how many people. Being able to hear you and see you every day. And at the end? What you did? We won’t know how many people you might have saved. You saved me…”

He wasn't wearing a shirt, but had on board shorts and, I kid not, flip flops.
His only other adornment were a blood-splattered chin and neck and two very long fangs jutting down from his top jaw, adequately displayed as he hissed at me.
I took aim and put the next paintball in his mouth.
Smoke poured out from between the vampire's green smeared lips. His eyes rolled wildly as he tried to scream but the paint had already eaten through his tongue and throat and all that came out was a wet gurgling.
One beautiful April day, when Sally was in sixth grade, all of the aunts' cats followed her to school. After that, even the teachers would not pass her in an empty hallway and would find an excuse to head in the other direction.

I'll come back later and link my book. I wonder if anyone can guess what I'm reading 😁 📚

I think I can because I recently read the sequel, so I'll give someone else a chance to guess it.

I've actually finished it - but is the closest book to me at the moment :)

Mackenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard
"The crosshairs settled, and his hands became rock steady. He drew in a breath, let out half of it and gently squeezed the trigger. Almost simultaneously with the sharp thunder in his ear he saw the red stain blossom on Bobby's shoulder and the knife drop from his suddenly useless hand even as he was thrown back by the bullet's impact."

Right now, the cops will be scraping my blood off the fence and my hair off the headrest in the car. Soon they’ll be searching databases for my DNA. I’ve been careful, so I’m hoping they won’t find any matches. But you can only eat so many people before someone notices. Maybe I left a trace somewhere. Maybe some cop has been hunting me for years, and this is his big break.

...She'd lit a fire in the grate and the room felt lovely and warm. She was humming away as if she was a kindly aunt or something, instead of someone who had locked us in our bedroom. Somehow that made her all the more scary...
An hour later, back at CBI headquarters, Al Stemple was leaning back in a Guzman Connection task-force conference-room chair. It groaned under his weight.
The others were here too, the whole crew. The two Steves - Lu and Foster - along with Jimmy Gomez. Allerton, as well, was back from the Seaside bungalow mission.
"What happened to you?" Gomez asked her. She had a bandage on her arm.

“Times like these I wonder if I ever been happy. From the start there's been a film of dingy on my days.... I see some folks walk easy and carry peace on their shoulders, but I been chained to a iron life.”
If The Creek Don't Rise by Leah Weiss

I was astounded to see a family of elephants lumbering among the foliage and could swear at one point that I glimpsed the slinking stripes of a tiger on the stalk.
In quiet amazement I watched us pass by tiny stations that would not look out of place in rural Britain, one at a place called Sookna that would have sat comfortably in the countryside of the English counties.

Annoyance and frustration clouded my thoughts. Finetti and Cassie had worked together in the uniform section for almost five years, forming a strong friendship that had become intimate on at least one occasion. Now things weren't as rosy between them.
Blood Sunset by Jarad Henry

The first time Ruairidh spoke to me about Ranish it came completely out of the blue.
By then I had already succumbed to what seemed like the inevitable, although I had been resisting it for long enough. And I still don't know why I gave up my career in favour of home-making and motherhood. Except the somehow it was what had been expected of me all my life.

I love Peter May's books, Brenda. Looking at your teaser I'll Keep You Safe would be an excellent book to read. I have put it on my TRB.
“Nothing ever seems too bad, too hard or too sad when you’ve got a Christmas tree in the living room. All those presents under it, all that anticipation. Just a way of saying there’s always light and hope in the world. And you’re lucky enough to have a family to share it with.”

When Ross MacLeod pulled the trigger and brought down the pheasant, he had no way of knowing he'd killed himself. And billions of others.

My tease comes from around the half way mark:
...JJ couldn't believe he was going to be turned into a robot...
So the skull was quite definitely at odds. However logic suggested that, as in life, it was likely to be connected to a larger structure, and this meant considerably more digging than I had envisaged. Plus, what was the correct method of disposal? Could I pop it in the wheelie bin alongside the remains of yesterday's satay chicken? It suddenly occurred to me that it might not be canine after all...

I'd been waiting for the vampire for years when he walked into the bar.
“A single, random, foolish event can often change a life—a chance meeting, or an accident or a moment of madness. But more often it happens by increments like a creeping tide, so slowly that we barely notice. My life was altered by a diagnosis. It was never going to be a death sentence, but it has robbed me by degrees.”
Close Your Eyes by Michael Robotham

I loved this book, too, Phrynne!
I will definitely re-read it as I read it long ago and I haven't read the entire series yet! By the time I read 2-7 I'll be ready to devour it again!

Niamh saw the lights change to green and the Mercedes start to turn left across the flow of traffic. And then she was blinded. A searing, burning light that obliterated all else, just a fraction of a second before the shockwave from the blast knocked her off her feet.

On the next landing, Bal was blinded all of a sudden by the blue brightness of a window as tall as a man. He let go of the railing and ran towards it. The dizzying sight of the vast emptiness beyond the opening forced him down on all fours. He held his nose close to the floor, shut his eyes, and thought it was a damned good thing Marten was not there to see him; a very good thing he was somewhere far down below, waving his red-and-gold hat for a shilling.
Randomly picked up a new book at the library... pleasantly surprised so far (only 2 chapters in).
Good thing Yoshi kept the garage floor immaculately clean. Whether because I was reminded of how unpleasant he'd been to Tess the previous afternoon or because some other instinct warned me away, I closed my mouth and turned away. I didn't want my day to start off in a conversation with Marcus.

"Nicholas Fox, infamous con artist and thief, woke up in a coffin."
and then:
"How are you feeling?" the man asked.
Nick took a long drink before he replied. "I suppose traveling to Belgium in a coffin is better than flying coach these days. At least I was able to lie flat"
"And sleep like the dead."
